Somebody milled a dovetail slot in it to fit some goofy scope base that wasn't for a Mauser receiver.

Bubba probably took off a European claw scope mount for which rings are essentially unavailable.
It was usual to cut that huge dovetail into the receiver ring for the front base. The rear base was screwed or soldered down and he got that off without having to plug a hole.
Then he drilled and tapped the receiver for Weaver bases, one screw hole going into his monster dovetail filler block.

I have not seen one of these to fail in use, but that sure looks like a lot of metal gone out of a stressed area, the receiver ring over the top locking lug recess. But the Germans et al got away with it on a lot of rifles.

It took me 5 seconds with Google to find this picture on some European forum

I have been sporterizing Mausers for 47 years.
I have always managed to attach scopes with less invasive surgery.

But the best deals I get on Mausers are when someone has tried to mount a scope and failed. Rather than drill more holes, I try to live with the mods already done tot the receiver and instead make custom mounts.

Like Clark said, your gun was scoped once. I have one just like that, but the wedge is well fitted and there's a German proofmark over mine. According to my instructor, it was scoped before WW I (thanks to the 1920 proofmarks).

that was done by mausers and used on some of their sinper rifles for the ss.not all made it to the ss.it would need those marking on the reciver.
