I have a chance to trade for a bolt action 30-30 that doesn't have a magazine. I need to identify what make and model it is so I can get one. Also I would just like to know this information. I see no serial number or make. It has a couple of marks behind the rear sight one looks like 171 or I7I right below that it looks like cp with a half circle around it. The marks are faint and my eyesight isn't the best. I have a few crappy pictures..my camera flash wasn't working. Also there is a hole on top of the receiver that you can see the bolt thru...is this supposed to be this way? You can see it in one of the pics.

I appreciate any help you guys can give.

Its of the Stevens/savage 340/840 line of guns with the exact model depending on configuration.

It probably has a model and number under the scope mount.

In great shape these are $250 guns all day long

Ahhh didn't even think about that. I guess I need to remove it to see. Are magazines easy to come by and about how much do they run? I've got about 200 rounds of .40 fmj that I'll be trading for it. Gonna try and trade straight up!

Is it a Revelation? Everyone is right about its Savage parentage.

Pretty funny, that magazine says it is a "clip"!!!

Marlin, Mossberg, dozens of sporting gun manufacturers call "detachable box magazines" clips in the instruction manuals and parts lists. In the 1950s, the only time people drew a distinction between "clip" and "magazine" was when ammunition for a model (usually military) came in both stripper clips and in detachable box magazines, like M1 carbine or M16. Since then, distinguishing clips from magazaines has becom pedantic, particularly among ex-military. Calling in a resupply of ammo in clips when you needed ammo in magazines is serious in a military situation. If your Savage 340 or Marlin 25 only came with what the factory called clips, it is not a big deal. (Ducking out and switching to Volokh)

Those mags will work. They are exactly like the ones for the Stevens 325B I recently worked on.

Had a M340 Savage. I handloaded spitzers for it. It was a MOA gun. I sold it to an Uncle. Kinda wish I'd kept it, but he needed a deer rifle.

When I saw 340s in the racks at Western Auto and other low budget sporting goods outlets, I thought they were bargain bin guns and paid no attention. Years later I helped my son mount a scope on one for a friend, using regular factory .30-30 Winchester rounds. One hundred yard, one inch 3 shot groups were easy.

The Marlin 340 is a solid rifle. They don`t last long when there`re for sale.
Buy that puppy! You can find a cilp/mag what ever , latter.

I can't add much to what's already been said, but it sure looks like a Savage 340. My Dad had one. It too shot really well with just about any 170 gr bullet! Numrichs is probably your best bet on a magazine!

And revolvers were once called pistols. Terminology becomes more precise with time, so what?

It also mentions "BBL" which is a unit of measure. Brl is short for barrel

How could I possibly know that the detachable magazines I posted would draw so much comment. Ah but wait, were they magazines or were they clips?

The guys who made these things, as pointed out, long before we were blessed with the Internet, chose to call them clips. So who would I be to argue?

When I was a kid there were things every kid wanted. There was always that fine rimfire rifle that was on the last page of "Boys Life" magazine be it a Winchester, Marlin or Remington bolt action .22 rifle. The most wanted list went on to include treasures like a fine set of Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, or Lone Ranger Pistols. Nobody ever received from Santa Clause a Revolver, they received a pistol assuming they made the Nice List! The final list item was the Red Ryder BB Gun and as everyone knows you will shoot your eye out with one of those.

Now I figure things this way. If the guys who made the gun chose to call it a pistol and not a revolver then it is a pistol. If you want to believe Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, or the Lone Ranger carried revolvers verse pistols then cool with me as I don't really care. Well maybe I do care a little.

I was one of those kids growing up during the 50s. Yes, that makes me old today. Matter of fact 63 years old as of a week ago.

Now we really go off topic! :)

When we get older our patience seem to grow thinner. Things that never bothered us during our 30s, 40s or even 50s seem to just piss us off as we by miraculous means pass 60. We seem to run out of patience with what I have come to call hopeless pedantic people. Here is an example:

Dear Forum, I have a S&W Model 29 pistol I am really fond of. Now enter a dozen hopeless pedantic types to tell me the S&W Model 29 is a revolver. This as the remaining readers who are gun savvy know exactly what the gun is and what it looks like. Whether I choose to call it a pistol or revolver matters not as long as those reading what I wrote know what the gun is.

Now to my simple older way of thinking pedantic people are just a group of people begging for opportunities to broadcast to the world how bright they are or at least seem to think they are. Whatever patience for pedantic people I once may have had are gone with my feeble fading memory. Actually I despise them because now I see them as idiots.

Call it a clip or call it a magazine as long as you and the reader can close their eyes and know what it is would be all that really matters

Just My Take
Ron
