Can this shoot slugs?

I am an avid pistol shooter but just bought my first shotgun so I have a newbie question. It is the simple single shot nef 20ga 3" modified. I know this gun has no rifling in the barrel but was curious if I could fire slugs out of it safely? I know it is not the best choice for close range deer hunting but I just want to know if it is a possibility.

Thanks

Yes, use rifled slugs for best accuracy.

They might hurt a bit to shoot. Those single shots are pretty light.

Yes I can imagine. I shot some number 6 shot yesterday and I have to say that it kicks harder than any other rifle I have ever fired.

What kind of range could I expect for a humane kill on a deer?

a rifled slug is good out past 100yrds. In a smooth barrel....as long as you can hit your target....should be the same.

It most assuredly is. Keep your distance close,...very effective. Probably one of my most favorite all around woods bumming guns when small game is the likely fare. All of my kids and grand kids, and many others,..have started their deer hunting with it,...and I am certain I am not the only one. Couple tips though. First: Keep the hinge area clean,..and relatively dry of lubricants. The H&R/NEF's have a nasty tendacy of opening on firing if gunked up or lubed too heavily. Otherwise,..they are built like a tank and run like a good Timex watch,......

Second,...Though they will shoot them, they are pretty light for 3 inch shells. I haven't ever seen the need to run them myself. YMMV.

Good luck, and enjoy that gun. As simple as they are,...they are just plain good guns.

You'll have to test a few brands of slugs and see what shoots best. Accurate smoothbore slug guns are usually good out to 75yds or so, but some can stretch it to 100.

Your "humane kill range" should be whatever range from which you can hold all your shots in an 8" circle, shot from field positions.

Thanks for the replies. The area I will be hunting is heavily wooded and I can't imagine taking a shot over 50 yards.

A 20 Gauge Slug IME/IMO is good to about 75 yards. If you might have to shoot further than that, use a 12 Gauge. I prefer the Brennekes in 20 Gauge for best results and the best penetration.

I have the same gun and it shoots the remington sluggers really well.
