Obama Allies Rally Against Pro-Gun Democrat

With the departure of martial arts master and spiritual chariot driver, Jesse Jackson Jr., there is a crowded field of Democrats angling to replace him - since the seat in Illinois will likely stay Democrat. According to The Hill, the Obama machine is working to make sure that the Democrat who wins the primary is not one of the pro-gun Dems. Since we have several members here who support both Democrats and the Second Amendment, I thought they would want to be aware of a candidate they can support to steer their party the right way on the Second Amendment:
http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/house-races/283045-obama-allies-rally-against-gun-rights-democrat-in-illinois-special-election

I'd also note that even if you don't care for the policies of the Democrat party, it is highly likely this seat goes to the winner of this primary. So even those opposed to the Democrats may want to help a pro-2A candidate win the primary. Michael Bloomberg just spent $1.3 million to make sure a Dem candidate who opposes AWB and mag bans does not win the primary. If you want to send a message to Bloomberg, you can donate to Halvorson at:

I really hope some of you "millenials" are taking notes and figuring out which political party hates guns and gun owners.

The smart money goes as indicated in the OP, look at the realities, support the member of the party supporting the 2A in the party least supportive of the 2A if you actually want to make a change.

Convert your enemy.

I know all about principle and values and so on. But in that election a Tea Party candidate or a Republican has as much chance as an icicle in a blast furnace. But if a pro-2A Democrat can win the primary, he or she would be a shoe-in.

A good approach might be to campaign as someone who listens to the voice of the local people, not to the big bosses in Washington. That always goes well, even with people who voted for the "big boss" in the last election.

As a resident of Cook county I see the fruit of Bloomberg's expenditures. The local broadcast channels and cable outlets are running the 2 anti Debbie ads at unbelieveable intervals. As there are no other congressional seats up for election (Thanks JJjr&Mrs.)and this primary is for the 2nd IL congressional district only. Without competing ad revenue and given their support for the anti gun agenda, the crescendo is monotone. I would love to see the dems eat their children over this seat and split the vote, but the GOP is impotent and can't find their butts with two hands. A viable conservative candidate is an oxymoron. I won't send DH money but she is leading by insinuation!:cuss:

The small silver lining in all this is that the end result can't be worse than a continuation of the status quo. J3 probably wasn't much of a friend of the Constitution.

This. There's a lot to hate about both parties, and the reasons I'm not a Republican are many. But it's important to notice which party, when it really comes down to it, will actively fight against gun ownership even if it means opposing their own members in a race. "Progressives" should pay heed to this and remember it.

This is just an ideological purge, the left-wing equivalent of a lot of stuff that happened to moderate Republicans. Even if you're a staunch Republican, it's not good to have no moderates in the other party with whom you can make common cause on particular issues. Consider giving money.

According to this story: http://news.yahoo.com/bloomberg-vs-nra-big-spending-could-swing-illinois-233948972.html

Bloomberg has now spent $2.1 million to kill off Halvorson's chance of winning. Are pro-gun Dems going to let a former Republican dictate who gets nominated in their primaries?

This is Chicago. Whoever Obama wants to win will win. I expect his pick to win by 109%

Who cares. The Republicans are going to rail the Democrats in the senate, whether or not any legislation is voted on. Fools.

Hillbilly, you aren't communicating with true "millenials". They are updating their facebook statuses and preparing for theatre degrees in college, then wonder why they can't find employment in their field of choice....all while being "poor" eating ramen noodles and using a $3500 mac book.

Sol: Those are called hipsters. No one likes them.

If I was a strategist, I'd say Bloomberg's involvement presents its own opportunity to smear the other candidate and make them look like Bloomberg's lackey. I think that might help to bias people away from the "out of state sponsored" candidate.

-Stiff penalties for Straw Buyers

-Universal Background Checks and registration of all firearms

-Making sure that background checks work so people do not fall through the cracks in the National Data Base.

-Ending the Gun Show loophole. This is from her website.

Not so sure I would call her 'pro 2A'. I don't know about the other candidates running, so maybe she is the lesser of evils?

She is opposing magazine bans and firearm bans even though it means she has had $2.1 million spent against her (she spent $50k) and she is running for Jackson Jr.'s old seat. That isn't what I would call pro-2A; but it is a marked improvement over the past and potential officeholders.

True, politics are a bit different up north it seems. Not that they are perfect here.

NBC news is reporting that Halvorson (the comparatively-pro-gun candidate) is leading in late polling, and even conjectures that Bloomberg's intervention may be backfiring. It will be very interesting to see this play out, as it may indicate whether (relatively) pro-gun Democrats have a future in their own party.

...Or they are serving their country in Afghanistan, starting families, trying to fix our broken society, or working 60+ hours a week, all the while facing a life in which they will likely never acheive the American Dream or the standard of living enjoyed by their parents, all thanks to an economy that has been bled dry by years of deficit spending and the disastrous social programs and policy decisions of the Baby Boomer generation.

Of course, Sol, it's always easier to spew generation-bashing ignorance than actually look at the world around you.
