No personal experience with Mavericks, but I don't think I've ever read a bad review.

They are very good shotguns.
I have owned one for over a decade with zero issues.

Same gun as the Model 500 with a few minor differences regarding the safety location. Barrels and such parts interchange. Had mine for almost 20 years and zero issues.
Bear in mind if you ever want to change barrels, Mossberg only made the 20" Security barrel and the 28" vent-rib Accu-choked barrel that fits on the longer 7-round mag tube, but fortunately, you can just get a 5-shot mag tube (they just unscrew) to go with another barrel if you want to swap it.

I looked at the mossberg persuader but the cost was soo much more for basically what i wanted in a HD shotgun.I have no plans to modify it except to throw a elastic buttstock shell holder that will cost me a whopping $5.This makes it the 3rd shotgun in my collection(along with my mossy 500 and rem 870).

I used my buddie's Maverick 88 on several occasions, and found it to be an extremely nimble, solid, reliable shotgun. It's light, points fast, and has a smooth, quiet action. I was very impressed and hope to add one to my collection in the future.

For $220 I couldn't argue for a "working man's" shotgun.I hope to take it out for a test run soon after I clean it of course.

I've looked real closely at buying one of these. If you have the money, I'd step up just a bit and get a Mossberg 500.

I recently bought a Mossberg Maverick 88 12 ga. shotgun for home defense. But i havent had a chance to fire it because of an on going election season gun ban and i cant take it out to the range. Its got ghost ring rear sights and a large front post sight, barrel heat shield and regular buttstock and 5 shot mag tube. Overall im satisfied with what ive seen so far (damn our elections cuz il only be able to fire it this July). I noticed that my Mav88's forearm is a bit shaky and has a bit of sideways play. My question is Have any of you good people experienced the same on your Maverick 88's

I have a moss 500 with a 28" barell.I wanted a dedicated HD shotgun. It was between a $550 persuader or a $220 maverick 88 security.I couldnt justify the extra $300+ for something that hopefully only gets used for range duty.....and nothing else.

From what I've read they're plenty good. Some guys switch out the forearm for a 500 forearm though.
Enjoy.

All the mossberg fore-ends have the wiggly looseness. They tried some rings on the mag tube to minimize this at one time. It seems more or a characteristic than a problem though.

Every mossy that I've tried out has that. Not a concern on my part.

My dad's Mossberg 500 (bought NIB in the mid '80s) has this forearm "wiggly looseness," as does my Maverick 88 which was bought NIB in the late '90s. Neither of us have ever had any issues whatsoever with either of our shotguns.

The looseness of the forearm isn't a problem.
From what I understand, the forearm is attached to the action arms differently in the 500 vs the Maverick.

Thanks for the replies on the Mav88 fore-end. You guys in U.S. are so lucky for less than U$200 you can have a NIB Maverick 88. Here in our islands i paid the equivalent of U$620 (had to work like a slave for year to save up) for my Maverick 88 (not including the U$100 additional charges for the registration papers). Add to the fact that u cant choose the actual gun your getting you only choose the brand and model u want from a display sample but the dealer gets the gun from a government secured warehouse, then after about 3 weeks calls up the customer to tell him he can now pick up it up at the gunstore. Reason why i was asking about the wiggly fore-end.

On the Maverick 88, is it alright to spray some hoppes gun oil or WD-40 inside the magazine tube? My Mav88 makes some squeaking sounds when im loading shells into the tube. Any replies is highly appreciated.

Generally you want to keep the mag tube dry. If you do oil it...wipe it down good afterwards.

Lonewulf, my 88 squeaks when loading shells too. I'm pretty sure it always has (bought over ten years ago). Never gave it much thought.

I have a maverick 88 8 shot that I have owned for a long time. I can not recall the date I bought the gun. You can get 9 shots in the Maverick 88 with an extended magazine tube. The Maverick and Mossberg's are designed to hold eight 3" shells. (If you use three 2 3/4" shells you can add six 3" shells for a total of nine shots.
I have got good service from Maverick 88. I do lightly oil the magazine tube on the outside and the action bars. If it moves and makes contact I always put a light coat of oil or grease on the parts. The 88 handles well enough to bust a round of skeet with a full stock. I always shoot a round of skeet to test accessories with the Maverick 88. I originally bought the 88 for Deer drives in close quarters. The large capacity has proved to be handy when a herd of deer almost ran me over.
My Maverick is quiet and you have to focus on moving the fore stock to get it to wiggle while you are shooting the gun. I tend to focus on the target, not on wiggling the stock. I never understand why the wiggle in the fore stock is an issue with any Mossberg product. You accept the fore stock and never give it a second thought.

It's really just a model 500 with two major differences. The 88 has only one action bar and the cob is not removable like the 500. Some say the 88 is a bit less polished internally but I find Mossberg lets the customer do the polishing on all their guns.

New Maverick 88s have two action arms. Not sure when they went to this but its been awhile. Same for the 500 I believe.
The forearm is either pinned on or the arms are formed/pressed into the forearm so that is true, not the same as the 500.

My HomeLand Security shotgun is the 5+1 Maverick 88 I bought in 1990 or so. It wears the 18-1/2" cylinder bore barrel.
Has never failed to go BOOM! on request.

I have owned a Maverick 88 with the extended magazine tube for several years. It is a good shooting gun. I have never had a moments trouble with my 88, nor can I recall it ever malfunctioning. My 88 has a full stock and I highly recommend the model with a full stock. People can say what they like but it is physically impossible to shoot as quickly or accurately with a pistol grip. The 88 is a great HD gun and a great deer gun when driving deer. On most deer drives hunters are very close together, making buckshot the load of choice. With 00 buckshot my Maverick 88 holds pattern just as good as any shotgun, bar none.

Interesting enough i decided to break down my mossy and maverick and other than the forend and trigger assembly i couldn't tell a difference. The fit/finish were the same as far as I could tell. The maverick does have the dual rails as someone pointed out.Looking now into putting a adjustable stock(no pistol grip) onto it next.Firm believer in the K.I.S.S. approach.

Mossberg has the tang safety whereas the Maverick has it near the safety which is what I prefer simply because that where I'm used to it being on my 10/22s
