I dno't do a lot of bp shooting but I"ve got the bug right now.

Traditions rifle,1:48 twist, terrible luck with prb using 70 gr. Pyro RS,and 2FF Triple 7. Only tired the one load so far,may try upping it in 5 grain jumps to see if it will do better.hits are 3-4" apart laterally, all hit ab out the same height.

also have some conicals I was given,If I shoot them right away can I skip getting some base wads,or will I just be wasting bullets and powder ?

thanks !

Post a picture of a fired patch. Someone here can analyze the patterns on it and tell you what you need to do.

You can shoot them without wads... I usually try a variety of load chains, wads, cardboard wads, wads behind PRB's, none at all. etc..

SASS Traditions rifle barrels w/1:48 twist are pretty good guns from the ones I've tried out. I used Pyrodex RS w/90 grs and was getting the rd balls to hit the same hole @ 50 yrds. Just start with that and .590 rd ball w/0.15 patch you should be able to get pretty good groups out of that barrel. I gave up on Triple 7 a long time ago.

Conicals you need run a heavy charge behind them so they bump up and seal the bore and bite to the rifling. 90grs in a 50 cal no card ! 1-48 Your rb problem can be any thing from patch thickness to the bore to much powder charge. FASTER TWIST wreaks havok on patches so idle back to 50grs on a 50. .590? round balls same hole at 50yds? Dellbert What same hole on first shot?

The only time I use a wad is if I am shooting shot & the only time I use less than 95grs. is if I am shooting patched round ball. For hallow base conicals I get my best results from 110 to 120grs...............

Never had a problem with it befour might need to foul the bore first. When new to bp an old time bp shooter told my how to season the barrel I did just what he told me to do and the barrels stay slick as glass. Only thing I haft to do is run a spit patch down the barrel after every three shots and I can keep the PRBs in the same hole all day long with that rifle at 50 yrds. Drop deer stone dead @ 100 yrds with PRBs .590 rd balls and .015 lubed patch. 90 grs of Pyrodex RS. If I drop the charge to 80 grs the way my sights are set I know that the rd ball will drop about 1" but still keep them the PRBs balls in the 1" groups at 50 yrds. Boomer I never done to well with conical bullets I have tried them at 50 and 100 yrds. I've always tried the foul shot befour loading them and still would end up with 3" groups @ 50 yrds the ones at 100 yrds would open up a little more than that. I just stuck with the PRBs and was able to get good groups out of a bbl w/1:48 twist. Boomer I just got a .58 cal rifle last year and I'm sure I'm going to need all the infor you guys can shell out when it comes to firing conical bullets.:banghead: I don't know everything I'm still learning stuff all the time. I do have a good time at it though.

SASS, FWIW, there are the occasional Traditions barrel that does not shoot well.
I have one that came with a kit rifle and it never shot well...:banghead:
