Hello friends and neighbors// "Civil " War weapons count?

If someone showed up with these, to use fighting, during the "Civil" War,... I'd let them stay.

Hello friends and neighbors// Woops... just noticed this is Rifle Country, the Mauser threw me off.

Here ya go.

Top: Arisaka with Mum, from the Japanese First Arsenal, pre 1917, with 1st style Bayonet.
Battlefield pick up from Tarawa, was on the tag, so it was used until early WWII.
179998

Mid: 98Gew Mauser, untouched

Bottom: 1869 Swiss Vetterli , with a partial box of .41 rimfire. It would have been nice to have a 12 shot in 1869.:D
The ammo is worth as much as this sporterised example of the old Military rifle. (anyone have a forearm going to waste?)

I'm still working on it. There are several C&R guns that are on my list to buy but I just can't find them for the right price or in the right condition. I love the history aspect of collecting old military guns.

I assume modified rifles don't count? I have a bunch of military bolt guns that no longer look military.

My first reaction was "I don't have much in the way of original military rifles." But it turns out I do have a couple. More than I first thought.

Here is a beauty that is pretty much one of a kind! It's a Persian short Mauser presented by the Imperial Iranian Air Force to one Col. Wu-Ping-Chung. I have not been able to find much history on this rifle. I've received an offer or two from a few collector buddies though and I may bite, as I'm trying to finance another project or two. I sure would like to know this particular rifle's story, though!

http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=180280&stc=1&d=1361668392

1942 Izhevsk Mosinka, Model 91/30. Has an excellent bore, but needs minor touch-up work on the crown. Has a shimmed trigger and some bolt work, as well as some action 'bedding.' A 2 MOA rifle or better with commercial ammunition when I do my part. Pictured here with sling and 1 round of Hungarian FMJ lead core "heavy ball" 185 grain ammunition.

http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=180281&stc=1&d=1361668392

The Mosin paired with its companion, my M1855 Rifle Musket in .58 cal (which is a reproduction, but uses an original buttplate and a few other original parts...I think). You can see the Rapine Minie I use in the right hand corner. A friend of mine tuned the lock on this gun, taking the trigger weight down to 3 lbs and it breaks like thin glass. Other custom work was done by Lodgewood Mfg in Whitewater, WI, including the fitting of the original buttplate.

Nice! How do you like the Tokarev?

I found it's more accurate than I am. It's a Yugo M57 that I got late summer last year for $200 with 2 mags and a holster in like new condition. Took awhile for AIM to get any 7.62x25 in stock and I've only gotten it to the range once so far. Took awhile on the cosmoline removal too. The pistol is rather 1911 like.

I noticed the price on all the Tokarev variants has jumped already, so I'm glad I ordered when I did.

Yeah, it's stubby for the rifle. The Finns weren't as big on bayonet fighting as the other militaries of the time. These mostly got used as utility knives. Not many were made, either, and hardly any survived. If you can find actual original Finnish bayonets, they'll fetch a higher price than the rifle they go on.

Hey, that's a decent collection there dark.zero - counting out duplicates (photos at different angles), I'm figuring you have around 50 or so milsurp rifles. Are you focusing on any particular eras, countries or themes?

IMHO, one only has a problem when you start skipping over life's essentials for a hobby. When you have to skip meals, or a date, or other fun because you're sunk yourself too deep in a hobby, that's where one might want to re-examine one's priorities. And this goes for any sort of collecting. I knew of one guy who was collecting automobiles. Basically the dude had no real furniture to speak of, and could not join the guys out very often - everything was sunk into acquiring and maintaining his hobby. That's where things clearly go over the top.

http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp42/dmattaponi/old.jpg (http://s396.photobucket.com/user/dmattaponi/media/old.jpg.html)

...the second is a more recent photo, but doesn't show the guns well, and is pretty washed out.

http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp42/dmattaponi/ManCave-1.jpg (http://s396.photobucket.com/user/dmattaponi/media/ManCave-1.jpg.html)

In the pictures (bottom picture from left to right)...

1942 Izzy Mosin Nagant 91-30, (on corner cabinet) 1939 Tula Nagant Revolver, 1943 BSA Shirley No4Mk1, 1944 Rockola M1 Carbine, 1944 Springfield Armory M1 Garand, 1939 Mauser K98, 1940 Type 38 Nagoya Arisaka, Series 1 (Probably early 40's Nagoya Type 99 Arisaka.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind comments. I had a partially finished, unused room in my basement, and a bunch of collections boxed in closets. I figured I'd combine them and get some enjoyment out of them. I have a men's Bible study that meets in my house each week, and the "Man Cave" is a nice "masculine" setting for it, even if it freaks out a newbie every now and then (especially when they come in and catch us detail stripping a Glock or some other firearm minutes before the study begins.

Other collections in the room are fossils, Civil War artifacts, Native American artifacts, WWII newpapers framed on all the walls, pocket knives, old hunting supplies, archaeology equipment, etc. The room has a living room furniture setting area, and a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, table and chairs. It's put together almost entirely from items I had stored, that weren't being used. It may not be pretty, but it's mine, and my wife had objections to me displaying all of my junk in her living room. Go figure ;-)

Here is my 1933 hex Tula M91/30. Nothing special and is all numbers matching after it was re-arsenal finished. I refinished the stock in red mahogany as I didn't like the old shellac finish. I just got a sling for it along with 30 stripper clips and one of the "recoil" pads. I really bought the pad to increase the LOP and it is a lot better now. I also cut a coil and a half off the firing pin spring to make it easier to cycle the bolt. It made a difference as I took the whole thing apart and cleaned it and then lubed it hoping that would fix it and it didn't. So after I lightened the spring, no more problems racking the bolt.

1). A 1893 Turk with cutoff box and stright stock. The Turkish 1893 was the first and only Mauser rifle ever to be built with a magazine cuttoff. This example still retains the Cuttoff box but unfortunaly the rest of the cuttoff mechinism has been removed long ago.

2). 1893 Turkish Mauser. This Example was upgraded in 1938 by removing the magazine cuttoff box and having the stock replaced with a more modern pattern piece of furniture.

3). 1903/30 These rifles started out life as 1903 pattern Mauser built in Germany on Contract for Turkey. The 1903 patern is am intermediate action meaning its receiver and bolt are shorter in length in compairison to ones of a K98. when the Turks began upgrading these rifles in 1930 they had to cut a notch in the front ring of the receiver so that the action could accept the new 8MM cartridge. many of these rifles have tear drop shapped bolt handles.

4). Turkish short rifle. This Model of Turk Mauser should not be refered to a "Carbine" but insted should be called a "Short Rifle" because that is exactly what it is. This example started off life as a German K98az that was converted in 1938 to Turkish standards. the bolt pictured in the Rifle is not correct, the rifle should have a bent bolt.

5). This is a German Gew 98 that was converted to a Turkish standards in 1937.
The Turkish Republic updated their old rifles to a common configuration commonly know, here in the US, as the Model of 1938 While actually starting the conversions in 1933 any rifle converted to this standard is commonly called Model 38.

Gew 98 converted M38s can be easily identified a small hole through the front of the trigger guard that was originally used for a sling swivel. also Gew98 convert rifles tend to have caputure screws along with the standard action screws.

The Turkish Crest has been stamped on very strong, but if you look close you can still see a little of the German crest that was not completly scrubed off.
http://i48.tinypic.com/2dgkd1d.jpg

6). Here is an ATF Turk. This example started out as a Gew 98 that was converted to Turk standards in 1954. These rifles were the last batch of Gew 98 to be converted to Turkish standards.
