I take it you don't have a book, or know where to locate first hand data from the powder / bullet manufacturer? Hogdon loading pages has it for you.

Are you SURE about that? How old is that manual? Current Hodgdon data is very different. Autocomp and 231 and very different powders and should not use the same data. 5.7-6.1 is very hot for 115gr unless you're using HS-6. I really like 231 with the 115gr FMJ, but I use 4.8-4.9gr of it. Check the data below before you load.

Actually.... the newest load data published by Winchester for W231 I'm seeing is higher thatn it was in 2007 when I started reloading.

I've used 4.7 grains of 231 as my standard load with a 115 grain bullet, for 9mm for maybe 20 years now. Works great. Makes all the auto-loaders function just fine.

tg,

that powder charge is for a 38 super. you never mentioned your caliber, but we all are assuming 9mm.

I have used 4.8 gr of W231/HP-38 with 115 gr FMJ loaded to 1.125"-1.135" OAL as my reference 9mm load for years based on the 1999-2005 Winchester load data which shows 4.9 gr as max charge for 115 gr FMJ bullet.

For Hornady XTP JHP, I would feel OK using Speer Gold Dot HP load data.

Current Hodgdon load data (http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp)
115 gr Speer GDHP W231/HP-38 OAL 1.125" Start 4.7 gr (1075 fps) 25,300 CUP - Max 5.1 gr (1167 fps) 28,100 CUP

1999-2005 Winchester load data (http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=159609&stc=1&d=1329800605)
http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=180030&stc=1&d=1361295258l

BTW, Lyman #49 does use the same Hornady XTP 115 gr JHP bullet at 1.090" OAL and lists:
231 Start 3.5 gr (959 fps) 20,700 CUP - Max 4.9 gr (1253 fps) 32,100 CUP

Loaded some at 5.0 =1200 fps. Would not recommend going any hotter.
