Just wondering how people feel about this load for the .44 mag. Looking to run it in either a Super Redhawk or Henry Big boy, for deer and pigs.

250grn Caste HP Bullet Gas Checked
10grn Win. 231 Powder
Federal Primer

I would rather use Unique or Universal for that load. W231 is pretty fast for .44 Magnum. For good old magnum velocities, I use 2400, Blue Dot, and WC820...

I'd use a little slower powder.

It's like trying to move a bowling ball.

You can hit it as hard as you can with your doubled up fist. (fast powder)
Or you can shove it with the palm of your hand. (medium & slow powder)

Which sounds like the best way to move it?

I would go with something like 2400 in 44 mag, especially out of a long barrel.

For hunting I would go with a slower burning powder like W296.

For hunting loads in 44 mag. I would personally go with H110 or 2400. But that is me and I always load with H110 or 296 when loading magnum handgun cartridges. But in terms relative to purpose of those loads, I would still find another powder that is a bit slower burning.

The charge of 231 looks to be suitable. It would work better than most in a short barreled revolver, say a 4 incher.

For longer barrels, I would opt for other choices. If all you have is 231, go for it. Later on when supplies loosen up, look to other powders.

My powder-puff load is 240 grain lead (to your 250 GC) with but 5.6 grains of 231. My 6 year old grand daughter loves to shoot it.
My 'big boy' loading does NOT use 231 (or HP38). Some day I will run out of what I'm using (no longer produced) and I will look to other slower powders. I have and use 296/H110 in other applications but feel the load window is too small. I also have Lit'gun and some seem to like it. I would think it would be OK for use in your Henry but I have pickup some noise about cutting top straps. Don't know much more. To be on the safe side until the jury comes back with a conclusion, I would go for 2400 or maybe #9 or Blue Dot. For now, it is what do you have and what can you get.

I like ACC #7 or #9 is a little faster.

OP, I would recommend a slower powder also.

AABEN, #9 would be slower than #7. Thats why you would get more velocity with it.

Especially with a gas check bullet which are made for full house maximum velocity load . I'd use a powder capable of a maximum velocity load.

2400, AA#9, AA4100, Ramshot Enforcer, H110, etc,......

Hey thank you all for the great info. From what I have researched I figured that 231 would be overly hot for my uses.

H110 is what 44 MAGNUMS are made from!:)

Alright well after a bit more research it seems that this is popular

Powder: H110
Charge: 23-24grns (depending on who ya talk to)
Bullet: 240grn JHP or JSP
primer: Winchester LP

what is the general consensus here? looks like more than a few load something similar to that. Id like to shoot loads on the lighter side of things, I have read however, that H110 can do some strange things when loaded light.

I also Have some IMR 800-x around. I see on their site that they have it loaded as follows.

14.2 grns. IMR 800-x
240 gr. Nos JHP

does any one have experience with this load, or preferably one a bit lighter?

OK, I think starting at the charge of 23.0 grains (remember I said 296/H110 has a small window), ease up small bits until you get what you and your weapons likes the best.

I shoot 22.9gr of H110 in my Ruger bolt action rifle with a 240gr Nosler JSP. It shoots awsome. I can keep them in a 2" group at 100yds. I seat them @ 1.580" with a heavy crimp and I use CCI Large Mag Primers. Love this load took 2 deer this past year with it.

800x is great in 44 mag
I prefer IMR4227 to 2400 but I load using all three of these and they are all great for the data I use.
