hi.
i need to order caps and prefer to have the correct size and not have quantity of 1000 of the wrong size.
i can't get these locally & my only access to these is via internet order.

i am aware one lot #10 may differ from another, but at least i would have a clue on if a #10 fits better than an #11.
i don't want to pinch #11s if that ends-up being the wrong choice.

i don't want to sound lame, but would someone kindly be interested in mailing me one cap of each size?
.

While I sympathize with you, I'm afraid your most cost effective method would be to find a local enthusiast, or a local supplier.

And for the record, pinching isn't so bad. :p Working with caps that are too small is much less enjoyable.

Haz mat?
Or someone could send him a birthday card that a couple of caps happened to fall into by "accident".

:D

I bet if you post what brand and model of gun you have and if the nipples are factory the experts on this forum could tell you the correct size to use.

I know I could make a lot of calls to my podunk FFLs that operate from their garages, they may know someone to drive-out & meet-up with a guy who can do this with me, but i'm looking for efficiency of the time involved.. fuel is not such a big deal, but time, distance, & fuel is a big deal.
Besides, FFLs are looking for sales, not community service.

It's the nature of the beast - caps that fit when the nipples are nice and clean might not fit when they get fouled up.

From an old Colt Industries pamphlet:
"Percussion caps are now made in sizes from nine to thirteen. Ten and eleven are the best numbers for the small and medium-sized arms, and twelve for the larger sizes, although, as different-sized nipples are sometimes met in specimens of the same model, no hard and fast rule can be given. It is better to have caps slightly too large than too small, as large caps can be pinched together at the bottom enough so they will stay on the nipples, but small ones must be driven down on the nipple by the blow of the hammer, and this process frequently cushions the blow to the extent of producing a misfire."

pohill, thanks for taking time to supply that information.
if slightly too large of a cap is good enough for Colt, then it's more than good enough for me.

. I havent read all the posts but why not just ship him one of each ""But"" with no compound in them ? Just put one in a cup of water and scrape out the fulminate or whatever and send just the cap right? sound good?:D

luvit,

I would wager #10's since the gun is a small frame...

Let me know if I am right so I can go buy a lottery ticket...:-)

Most of the after market nipples are made to a specific cap. Order a set of new nipples then get the caps that fit them.

Lunie:

Contact me if you are headed to Springfield. I have Remington #10 and CCI #11 caps on hand and will be glad to give you some samples. We can meet at a Panera or Starbucks or some such and do the deed.

Or we can rendezvous at a Central Ozarks Western Shooters match sometime this spring.

Lemme know what works for you.

The Remington 10 and CCI 11's J-Bar mentioned fit about 90% of the percussion revolvers made. CCI 10's on the other hand, are too small for anything I've ever had, other than an odd single barrel derringer I got from Dixie many, many moons ago.

CCI #10s fit great on the stock Pietta nipples in an 1860 Army I bought from Cabela's last year...

Not a good idea. They are water proof. Coated with a varnish.

My apologies to luvit, I misread his name as "lunie" who I know lives in Missouri. My offer stands if luvit ever comes through Springfield, however.

BHP FAN, great details.. thanks!

Hammerdown77, my gun was manufactured in 1970, but the nipples era/manufacturer is unknown.

J-Bar, I thought that may have been the case, no worries. If you are ever in SE Ohio, I offer the same.

I hope it's ok to post this link. It's very helpful to me in understanding why one cap fits and another doesn't and what if anything to do about it. Moderators, if this is a problem please delete the post. Thanks,

what if anything to do about it.
What did you conclude?

The Idea of ""scraping"" the stuff out of the cap in water is to eliminate the cap from going off.I tryed it on a few,and it works just fine,or you can just fire a couple and be done with it :D
