It really is a good deal, and having taken two courses from these guys at Gunstock, I'll tell you that we'd really be getting our money's worth. Remember though, that the $35 wouldn't cover your ammo for the course, but you guys would probably be sending just as much downrange that week anyway. :D

Before we get too willing to commit to a date, let's check the calendar for the guys at TIGER Valley. This will show events being held both here at the local location, as well as Waco.

The facilities are good, but the instructors are few, so it's not like there are teams of them to handle all the courses simultaneously. geegee

Looks like they have a big competition going on the weekend of the 16-18, you might want to email them to see when is a good time geegee. I'm free pretty much every weekend so the date doesn't matter much to me.

The yahoo thing is cool.

Feel free to share my contact info.

The course idea sounds very appealing especially since one of us knows how good the instructors are. $35 sounds reasonable too.

How far is T.I.G.E.R. Valley from DFW?

I'm open to either Sat or Sun.
Talking about @ the Shooting Gallery again?

BTW: Stopped by the Shooting Gallery after work today and they were having their 1st IDPA shoot.

Went over after shooting and watched them a bit.
Spoke briefly w/ Greg Whitmore - Pres. of IDPA Dallas. He was there to get the Cross Timbers (FW IDPA up and running).
Looked to be about 35+ people there, assuming was a mix of Cross Timbers and Dallas IDPA.
Greg said it looks like they are going to be doing a semi-monthly gig here in FW @ the Shooting Gallery.

Andrew is the primary contact for here in Ft. Worth. Did not have a chance to talk w/ him.
Had 2 courses of fire set in the over-flow range we were last Sunday. on each side.

GeeGee,

Didn't realize TIGER had a location in Dallas.

Are we talking about doing the course here or in Waco? Just curious.
I'm game either place. Sounds like a bargain at twice the price.:D

What type of course are considering or do they suggest?

Just so everyone is clear on this, we don't necessarily have to do a weekend. There is a possibility of doing something during the week, since we're basically talking about a two hour course. Just a thought.

How far is T.I.G.E.R. Valley from DFW?
Nik-very easy to get to. It's actually part of the Elm Fork Range, located on Luna Rd, off of 635. Definitely easier to get to than the one outside of Waco!

Here's the answer I received from T.J. Pilling, so you can see there will be plenty of courses we could request:

You bet, we have a 10 person requirement on the number of students. We can do it in the evening or on a weekend. The cost per shooter is $35.00. We have done several 2 hour mid-week classes. The last one was a low light class. We can cover a wide range of shooting topics like moving and shooting, moving targets, shooting from concealment, or what every you guys desire. Let me know

Don't get me wrong...I'm motivated, but I would really need that date as far in advance as possible so that I can be sure to be off of work. It would suck gigantic nuts to get called in to work while sitting at a shooting range in Waco.

Besides...I don't want people missing out because we chose a weekday...if Nik can't make a week day, let's do it on a Sat. or Sunday. We can make a day of it. Can you say "ICE CHEST"? and "BEER"? after the shooting of course.:p

:D Just got approval from my wife for up to $300 on a rifle. Birthdays and tax returns are great :D Persistance pays off too - hehehe.

So, it's looking like I might be properly equipped for a rifle shoot too.

Any suggestions for a good semi auto rifle for under or just around $300 are welcomed. I'm gonna need something that eats some sort of inexpensive ammo. Right now I'm considering SKS or AK but are there any other good ones out there?

Saiga....you won't get a decent AK for under 300.00. Avoid those Romanian things like the plague unless you "LIKE" to rebuild a gun you just bought. You can actually get a Saiga with a 22 inch barrel in the wood furniture, which is what I am desperately searching for. Otherwise get an EXCELLENT condition Yugo SKS from SOG AND a Russian Mosin Nagat 91/30 for your pinpoint accuracy shooter and still have about 75.00 left for scopes, stocks or ammo.

I am going to get one of the Nagats. I was tempted to get a Mitchel's Mauser for 200.00 as they are 8mm wonder's in terms of accuracy. But the Mosin and Mauser are both bolts. The Mosin's are available from SOG for 59.00....get a halfways decent Tasco and ATI stock and you have dropped a grand total of less than 200.:D

Me? I'm going for an SKS since....
1. there are a million after market mods and parts for them, you can turn it into anything your heart desires...except MOA at 300 yds..
2. they shoot the cheapest crappiest (cheapest) ammo on God's wonderful earth and they beg for more.
3. they won't be around forever.
4. Saiga is out of stock everywhere you call, though you could try CDNN.
5. Excellent condition ones? can be had for 120.00 and the Unissued ones for anywhere from 159.99-179.99.

Here are my thoughts on the stuff I missed last night:

I'd like to do an informal rifle shoot for April, not a Tiger Valley shoot (but I'll go with the group consensus). I'd also like to get 30 days notice on the course so I can actually schedule it. It think most of us have families so the more notice we have, the better.

I think I'd like to do a pistol course first at Tiger Valley. Alduro and Nik will have unproven rifles and will need some range time to get any kinks worked out. I could use some range time, too. Also, do we all have equipment to do a carbine course? You'd need a semi-auto rifle with detachable mags, and I think some of our group are ill-prepared for that. I'll be posting a poll on Yahoo about that.

Nik, I don't know if you are stuck on an AK, but Cetmes can be had for that price range, as well.

TechBrute

I just posted a few polls on Yahoo for our information regarding some courses.

Alduro, as our elected (oh, did we forget to tell you?) leader, let's get an event, date, and location nailed down for April. We've talked about several things, so if everyone could weigh in ASAP as to what/when/where we'd like to do, we could get the ball rolling.:D

OK, I gotta confess ignorance on my part relative to the training polls.

What is the proper equipment for:

1. A handgun course? Apart from the handgun, that is  Never having been to one - I get the impression one is supposed to bring a full sized sidearm and OWB holster. True? If one should actually train with what one carries in the Texas summer, I could see the class slowing down while I fish a P7 out of a Kramer confidant :o Texas winter might see the occasional P7 from a Versa Max IWB - better but still slow and not usable for most of the year.

Admittedly, the Kramer results in a draw from concealment that can be timed with a sundial, but I haven't come up with an alternative yet. Until I learn to conceal a full-sized 1911 with a tucked-in shirt, using an OWB would seem about as real-life relevant as training for cowboy action shooting. Any input appreciated. My CHL has gone mostly unused and this might be a good time to rectify that.

2. A carbine course - I think I'm good to go - There's an as yet unfired frankengun in the safe - Rock River AR lower with Bushy dissipater upper. It is, however, "bare" - A2 sights, no sling, no light, no red dot - no nothin'. Would this work?

3. Shotgun - this poll I could answer: dont' own one. :o
I had some half-baked plans to get a stagecoach double for possible CAS - a shottie course pretty much needs a pump or semi, right?

What do you guys think of having the next get together on April 16 or 17? Will that work for everybody?

As I posted earlier, this is the ONE weekend that I cannot make it. How about the next weekend of 4/24 & 4/25 instead?

The short training s sound very cool. I voted for handguns first just because I actually carry one most every day. Curious though, why the emphasis on carbine instead of rifle? What am I missing?

geegee
March 26, 2004, 10:31 AM
I'll add my .02 here. It would seem that while everyone would be on board for some handgun training, not everyone will be able to do a rifle course. That's no problem. It's not like we have to get everything done all at once. Many of us expressed a desire to make a THR get together a monthly (or so) event, so let's start with the basics. To that end, I would suggest a basic defensive pistol course.

I'll contact TJ Pilling again and run it by him. His partner tought a great Def. Pistol course one afternoon at Gunstock, and I'm sure it's one that all would benefit from. He covered a heck of a lot: drawing from a holster, tactical re-loads, hitting multiple targets, etc. I'm not saying that's what our course would be, because I don't know, but if they would offer something like that it would be great. I'll be back once I get some info. geegee

Hawk, I apoligize. I had meant to detail what you should have, but I didn't think people would respond so quickly. (Should have known. :D)

Handgun:
Needed: Handgun, holster, mags or speedloaders (or moonclips:D), holder for reloads (magpouch, etc.), concealment garment (vest or light jacket works great), safety gear.
Recommended: Kneepads, water, hat, "tactical" flashlight (if everyone's equipped then we have an option to go to low-light shooting.

Shotgun:
Needed: Repeating shotgun, ammo holder, safety gear.
Recommended: Sling and sidearm for transition drills, kneepads, water, hat.

Carbine:
Needed: Semi-auto rifle with detachable mags, mags, mag holders, safety gear.
Recommended: Sling and sidearm for transition drills, kneepads, water, hat.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. If someone can jump in and fill in where I missed, that would be great.

Tiberius, maybe it's just semantics. When I think rifle, I think 100 yards+. When I think carbine, I think from CQB up to 100yds. That's just what's in my mind. If you've got other ideas, please share! :D

I am open to almost any weekend in April. I do have only one problem. I have to work EVERY Saturday, so I can only come on Sunday's. A handgun class would be fun. I think I am equipped well enough, other than having a tactical light which would prevent me from a low light shoot. For shotgun, I need to change the stock on my hand cannon and I believe I would be properly equipped. Sounds like fun. Although the Shooting Gallery was quite a drive for me, I don't really mind. I think its going to end up being the best place for us to shoot regularly simply because we can reserve that whole range, the exhaust system works great, they have the nice little lounge area and we can shoot rifle there too (somewhat limited in range space, but ok). I bet if we proved to be good folks to them, they would even let us shoot the occasional shotgun in there too (alduro, your thoughts).

Also, I am no where close to being rifle course equipped, but it would be fun to at least watch you guys even if I dont participate.

Sunday's work great for me.

" I bet if we proved to be good folks to them, they would even let us shoot the occasional shotgun in there too (alduro, your thoughts). "

I bet they would eventually let us, I will see if I can work out a special arragement....like we would only use 7 1/2 shot for practice or somthing. Which will be fine for close in shooting, it takes a few yards for patterns to spread.

tiberius: for a good really accurate bolt try a Mitchel's Mauser 8mm or one of the SOG Mosin Nagat's 7.62x54 which are going for about 59.00. Drop it in an ATI stock with a bent bolt and scope and you've spent less than 200.00 for what I have been told is an outstandingly accurate rifle. I can PERSONALLY attest to the accuracy of an 8mm Mauser made on German machines...."Tack Driver", thy name is K98...or 48 for the Yugo's.

I do not personally feel myself properly equipted for a rifle course...about the best I could do is an SKS using stripper clips. I'm not sure how well that would work out but I would avoid the CETME or CMTE whatever. It seems that quality control is pretty low for those things....you never know what you're gonna get. I might just wind up getting a plinker from Oly arms...to satisfy the AR nuts...though I personally would prefer a nice scoped sniper type rifle.

Sunday's are good by me.

I believe DFW Gun is OK with shotguns. I know I've seen 'em used there. This is, after all, the crowd that lets me air out the Rigby on an indoor range that is separated from the lounge by nothing more than a window. I suspect I prove to be a mild distraction to those watching movies. Lucky for them I'm done for the day after (at most) 5 rounds.

My experiences with my two M-N's are hit & miss. One of the cut-down numbers seems to shoot well; the one with the counterbore in lieu of re-crown might as well be a smoothbore. I'm looking forward to trying a K98 based on Alduro's comments.

Until that happens, the all time tack-driving, slick action, nice trigger mil-surp is the Swiss K-31. Too bad the ammo is spendier than the 8mm.

I really liked the Shooting gallery set up for handgun shooting. It was great to have everyone shooting at the same time and not have to call an all clear every time a target needed changing as it would have been at an outdoor range.

I like the outdoor range for a rifle shoot and/or handgun class. The gallery's rifle set up is a little limited - it was kinda crammed with 2 guys shooting and 4 or 5 watching.

Regarding dates the April 20 something weekend is better for me but I would try to make whichever one we settle on.

Thanks for the rifle advice....I'll post my query in the rifle section which I have not visited.

And I was just about to get one of those to.

Hey, a dude is buying my Beretta 92>......how cool is that? Looks like I might be able to get an AR after all. I think I am going to get the Olympic Arms Plinker....since anything more expensive I would be drawn and quartered by my future wife for getting. Besides, the next step up that Techbrute recommended would STILL need optics before you could shoot it. MAJOR bummer. Open sights with a plinker will have to do.

I think I am going to get the Olympic Arms Plinker You're killing me... Spend the extra $150... Confucious say, "buy quality and you only cry once. Buy crap and you cry all the time."

Just kidding. The plinkers are not complete crap, IMHO the big weakness is their configuration with the fixed A1 carry handle. You really should spend the extra and get a flat-top. Put some iron sights or a carry handle on it and you are GTG. Then you'll have more flexibility later.

I've never fired a 180, but everything I've heard was positive.

so what does an AR-15 cost anyway?

TechBrute
March 26, 2004, 09:28 PM
so what does an AR-15 cost anyway? $600 and up. Most fall in the $700-900 range. Like anything else, the sky's the limit. Having $2500 in the upper by itself isn't unheard of, and $1500 for a pre-ban lower isn't that bad, either. Then you could upgrade the stock to a Magpul M93 for $250 and have yourself a nice $4250 rifle. Oh yeah... forgot to put optics or sights on that... you get the drift.

I'd probably opt for spending $700ish on a used flat-top and then getting some iron sights for it.

Alduro, I don't know the deal with the LEO-only rifles, but they come up for sale in the ARFCOM equipment exchange periodically for $650-$750. They can have all the pre-ban goodies that peasants can't be trusted with. Might as well use one of those perks, right?

What's a Plinker going for these days, anyway?

AR-15's can be most anything one would want them to be...

TechBrute might verify (from shooting my STI) that I can be somewhat anal-retentive about triggers. My first AR was a Rock River Varmint EOP 24" with a NM 2 stage trigger and Hubble space telescope (actually a Springer 6-20 MilDot) bolted to the top - likely not recognizable as an AR.

My only other AR started life when I found out Sarah B. was litigating Bushmaster after the beltway incident. I bought a Dissipater upper for MSRP from their (Bushmaster's - not Brady's) web site. Later on, I got a Rock River lower which came together into a frankengun I thought sucked - trigger has been replaced with an "Accuracy Speaks" product and now I can live with it. Safety engagement is a little rough due to the hack that assembled it (unh, ME) :o

Two guns that couldn't be more different - a most adaptable weapon. I'm just starting to learn.

Ironically enough, without the '94 ban and Sarah's grave dance, I never would have discovered either - I bought 'em out of sheer spite. The first because of Clinton, the second because of Sarah. I hope they're both proud.

Up until the political mess, AR's were at the bottom of my list - I mean, every time you pulled the trigger (no mean feat in itself) you got...
Pop....SPROING
Pop....SPROING
I've learned to like it - welcome to the dark side.

The main problem with the plinker is that it is a cast reciever, you can find an olympic with a forged receiver for ~100 bucks more. I paid 550 for my olympic PCR2 in like new condition. I wish it was a removable carry handle, but I can still mount some sort of optics and use the fixed sights as well. Speaking of which, TechBrute I need to try out your aimpoint :D I'm good for any weekend in april for the GTG so lets set what works best for everyone. As far as the courses go, I agree that it seems everyone is a little better prepped for a handgun course. http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=897973
You'll learn. My wife would have never known about the $400 (or whatever) you got from the M9. If you don't tell your wife what guns you have, you don't have to explain the new one or where the old one went. Get a safe to "hide" them in. Then make up a combination and tell it to her when you guys are doing something. She won't write it down and she forgets what it is. That, plus the fact she has no interest in them whatsoever. :D

Yeah, I think Sunday @ 1:00, Alduro and Hawk are meeting at DFW in Dallas on Mockingbird...pretty sure about that.

Hey, thanks all for being supportive of my only 1 weekend day off work schedule. It sucks, but thats the biz I am in. Saturday's are just not an option for me. I do appreciate your consideration though.

As a side note, I am "usually" off at noon on most Wednesdays if someone wants to get together once in a while for some plinking.

Here's some additional info to chew over. I asked TJ Pilling about doing a defensive handgun course, similar to the one his partner John taught at Gunsite. I also asked about the availability of dates at TIGER Valley in Dallas. Here's his response:

We have April 11th open or May 9th, or May 23rd all are Sundays. I just left the range with a shooter who shot 1000 rounds shooting drills in four hours. We can do anything you guys want as far a pistol goes. Let us know what you have in mind. The only time John will be available will be May 23
As you can see, they're willing to work with us if we can nail down a date. Comments?

May 23rd...is very bad for Alduro...it's my soon to be wife's Birthday..and she'll absolutely spend MORE of my hard earned cash if I take a day of training that day. April 11th might be good but May 9th would be way better.

detachable mag?

pistol grip?

what?

TechBrute
March 29, 2004, 12:00 AM
Carbine:
Needed: Semi-auto rifle with detachable mags, mags, mag holders, safety gear.
Recommended: Sling and sidearm for transition drills, kneepads, water, hat.

That's just off the top of my head. I may have missed something.

Edited to add: Come to think of it, I guess you could get by with some types of rifles that don't have detachable mags, but it might be kind of awkward, and I'm not sure if you'd get your money's worth.

Hey I thought I would let you guys know here that I would be willing to meet 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 for personal handgun training to get you to more of an intermediate skill level concerning defensive handgun skills. I will meet with anyone willing to do this at the "Winchest Gallery" IF they are okay with issolating us....

my training is as follows:

1.) **** (you know where I work) qualified with Sig Sauer 229 .40 cal. & Remi 870 12 ga. Academy basics.

2.) Executive Specialist qualified....this will only be of pertinance for drawing from cover, all other stuff this covered is situational awareness etc. Oatman and Associates/Fed. (most may be taught WITHOUT pistol, red gun will suffice.

3.) Force on Force Defensive Tactics, Dallas PD and Strike Force intl. MUST have red gun or airsoft gun (better) and a LIVE weapon.

4.) Thunder Ranch....(scaled down version "on site") concerns room clearing, engagement, eviromental awareness, psychological states, tactics etc. Good stuff...most can be taught WITHOUT a gun, just need a red gun. Threat recognition.

you know the email

alduro@mailcity.com

also...anyone with specialized training in carbines or shotguns...email me, let's hook up.

Anyone interested will need about 300 rounds and a GOOD holster to draw from concealment. NO "soft" holsters like an Uncle Mikes IWB. Also will need snap caps if you're gun requires them for dry firing. A vest, button up shirt or whatever you would normally conceal a weapon with needed. This is a Buddy deal only...please don't invite someone I haven't met.:D

Not to be a jerk but I don't want to get shot trying to do someone a favor.:uhoh:

Although the $85 for the 6 hour class sounds very reasonable the $35 sounds a lot better right now.

I think our April shoot is a rifle shoot and I was under the impression it is going to be at Gibsons... We probably need to firm this up by this weekend so we can all make arrangements.

I have started work on putting a web page together for us. I should have something for people to look at in the next 3-5 days. I will post on Yahoo when it is up. Remember...this is very preliminary and is free at this point. If we actually put it into action, we will of course have to pay for it, assuming we have enough interest. I think you will like it when you see it. I am working on getting a forum on there for us to use. This will likely be the most difficult part of it.

Have been considering getting an SKS sometime soon and would like to try that.

If this is kosher, what ammo should I get for some of you w/ long arms available?
7.62x39? .223? ???

TechBrute
March 30, 2004, 08:01 AM
For those of you that are rifle challenged, I have several ARs that I can bring, along with several bolt action rifles. I'm tossing around the idea of my first AK (I'll blame alduro for that), as well. Pretty much everything will be in .223, or 7.62x38 if I get an AK.

orangeninja
March 30, 2004, 08:10 AM
Techbrute....DON'T get the Romanian....I've heard some rough stuff about their accuracy (like an AK is accurate) and their sights are real iffy at best. I tried out Hawk's Yugo SKS and that thing ROCKS. It's heavy as any rifle I've ever seen though, could be that reenforced milled reciever. NOBODY has those friggin Saiga's in stock. If I get one, I'm thinking of a 22 incher in .308.

That's a good idea. I am generally pretty open to what dates we pick, just have a particular date I CAN'T use. Maybe the poll would be better if it asked "What date works worst for you" so we would pick the one that the fewest people have a problem with.

okay...jeleous rant over.

Well, you're one of the reasons I started considering them. However, you were talking about spending $300-$350 on some other AK (Saiga?) and then doing all this work to it so that it has some of the characteristics of the VEPR. Maybe I'm way off on my numbers, but $350 for the rifle, plus $100 in parts, and you're only $100 away from getting an actual VEPR. I've also heard that the finish and other cosmetics are much nicer, so if you add $$ to refinish it and such, it's a wash.

Actually, I don't really want an AK, I'm only getting one to piss you off. :neener:  :D

I propose that the $35 fee be paid by the April shoot date. This way we'll have a definate head count, and if someone doesn't show, we'll still be able to have the class. If you're serious about coming, pony up the cash. I think this will help us avoid any wheel spinning that may occur.:D

So here's something we haven't discussed-the start and finish times. Suggestions? geegee

aguyindallas
April 6, 2004, 08:22 PM
I propose a little early...here is why:

If I recall, we are talking about May 23rd...correct me if I am wrong on the date...won't it be getting kinda warm this time of year? Maybe we can start this around 9:00.

Due to the date, it will likely interfere with a typical monthly group shoot if it were to be later in the day. Here is what I propose. We have the tactical class, grab a snack, meet up with the rest of the group for a little afternoon shooting at the range and go from there. This would assume that we wanted to meet at the range with the rest of the folks to shoot again.

I have a Ford Explorer and am happy to haul some folks around if we want to carpool to this thing...your thoughts?
