Uberti1851 Short Arbor?

Hi. I just received a NOS 1851 Uberti from a forum member here. Nice piece, never fired. Not sure how old, but reportedly at least 5 yrs. The wedge knocked right out and the gun came apart easily enough. Upon reassembly, putting the wedge back in about where it was tended to bind up the cylinder, and I had to tap it back out some to restore function. Seems to me this should not be that touchy, and that the wedge should push the pieces against each other solidly. Do I have the Uberti short arbor syndrome? Also, the gap at the forcing cone/cylinder is not uniform; it is wider at the top when looking from the side and quite small. Does this need to be addressed or is it a non issue? Thank you all, and love learning about this stuff, tk

Try putting a 5mm split washer down the arbor hole in the barrel before putting the barrel on the gun. Alotta times this has worked to "lengthen" the arbor a bit. I think it is 5mm, but just to be safe, measure.

Thanx. I did the short arbor test, and ended up gluing two #6 brass washers on the end of the arbor, which is just slightly more than needed, then I'll file to perfect. I saw Pettifoggers and didn't want to go to that trouble at this point. If the washers fall off, then maybe. Washer down the barrel seems good as well, but you can't "tune" that readily if the 5mm isn't perfect for your gun. Guess one could fit a brass disc and drop that in the hole.....Thanks again, tk

There is a thread called "Open range" on the net that goes into detail about this condition. Do a search on it, good info.
