I have a Browning Highwall reproduction rifle that the previous owner stripped off the finish on the stock and fore end and stained it green (so ugly that you spell it with 4 "U's" -- uuuugly!). It did have beautifully figured wood that I would like to restore to it's original condition.
How do I get the stain out and what do I use to restain it? Thanks..... Frankie

To remove a stain, you use a wood bleach.
What type of bleach is used depends on the type of stain.
Some stains are removed with Oxalic Acid which is also used to clean dirty un-finished leather before dyeing.
Usually for normal stains you go to a swimming pool supply house and buy powdered pool bleach. Laundry bleach will NOT do the job.
Mix this with warm water to a totally saturated mix. Totally saturated is when no more powder will dissolve.
WARNING: This is POWERFUL stuff. Use rubber gloves and watch your eyes and clothes.
You submerge the wood in the saturated solution and soak until the color is gone, rinse and then neutralize the bleach with a mix of water and baking soda.

It likely will never all come out. Stain is designed to penetrate deep into the wood ; it would be very, very tough to draw it all back out. I tried to remove some stain on a stock I screwed up, and while a lot of the color came off, there was still a tint left behind that was pretty visible.
I never have tried the bleach though. That would be worth a shot.
