I was talking to my neighbor tonight. He is looking for a new or a used S&W .357 SIG in very good condition.

He said they are nowhere to be found, and he claims that he has looked everywhere (local gun shops and internet).

I don't know anything about these handguns (only shoot .45ACP Colt 1911 and reload same).

Is it true these guns are basically nowhere to be found?

Thank's
Ron

BTW ... I posted this same question on the "1911 Forum" yesterday. Almost 100 views and not 1 reply.

As I said, I know nothing about this handgun, but I am thinking that it might not be a very popular gun?

Your friend can get a 357 SIG M&P (assuming he is referring to that) by getting the M&P 40 and buying a 357 SIG barrel.

Springs are the same, mags are the same, just swap barrels.

I guess a "M&P" is what he is talking about.

Don't S&W just make .357 SIG M&P so that you don't need to change the barrel?

I wonder why he can't find one for sale? I can understand why there are hardly any "assault rifes" available now since so many people are worried that the gov. is going to ban them in the near future .... but I can't understand why the S&W .357 SIG is not anywhere to be found.

Do people believe these handguns are also going to be banned soon ... so they have bought up all remaining stock of them?

Ok ... I did an internet search.

Went to the S&W website. I see Smith & Wesson does in fact make a .357 SIG M&P ($727 retail)

But, nothing available ... maybe S&W just stopped making them? However, even if they did, you would think there would be used ones for sale somewhere?

I think S&W M&P in .357 SIG are issue guns for a number of police departments. My son is a NC State Trooper, and that's their issue weapon. He likes his a lot.

That said, I've heard of some issues with that particular gun in .357 SIG, and S&W is apparently still dealing with it; I don't remember the details. (It may just be ammo costs, for practice, which would be a big deal for agencies, given current budgets.)

If you just have to have a .357 SIG hangun, I suspect the .40 M&P model with an after-market ,357 barrel would do the trick. You can probably find one used. I have an M&P Pro in 9mm, bought used and tuned by SpeedSpecialities, and it's one of the best shooting guns I own, and I've got some good ones. I prefer the M&P Pro to the M&P.

But, unless you plan to make a practice of shooting through windshields, I'm not sure the .357 SIG offers enough performance improvement over 9mm or .40 to have to justify going that route, as the ammo is quite a bit more expensive. (If you reload, it's not a concern.)

By the way, a lot of guns are SCARCE, nowadays, with the gun ban/magazine ban scare in effect. They'll eventually show up.

For months CDNN was offering S&W M&Ps in .357 Sig for a crazy price--$399? Haven't seen them advertised since the panic, but might be worth a call.

Apparently, since the .357SIG cartridge isn't exactly selling nearly as well as the Big 3 duty/service calibers (9, .40 & .45 ACP), S&W is supposedly (and understandably) focusing more on the heavy demand for the strong selling Big 3 calibers. Makes sense.

Last I heard, they were mostly (at least for now) making runs of M&P 357's when LE agencies order them (not a lot of them, but a few).

Reminds me of when I asked a Glock LE rep several years ago (6-7?) how many Glocks they were selling in .357 Auto. He said they weren't (at least at that time) given those statistics, but told that when he'd asked about it, he'd been told the company apparently made 1 Glock chambered in .357 for every 2500 Glocks being made in other calibers. (He didn't know if that meant out of all other calibers, combined, or compared against each caliber, separately.)

If the .357SIG were more popular, you'd be seeing S&W making more of them. At least they chambered their M&P in the caliber, since they never offered it in their 3rd gen models. ;)

I'd not hold my breath to see a .45GAP or 10mm in the M&P line, either.
