Orders given that Bush's feet are not to come in contact with dirt

Money in his coffers, but no dirt on his shoes
by Jimmy Breslin
March 11, 2004

For days now, the job at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County has been to follow the order from the White House through the Secret Service and down to the park workers:

"The president's feet are not to touch the dirt."

So all yesterday, large crews drawn from all county parks worked to ensure that, as always in his life, George Bush's feet do not touch the ground when he appears in the big park today.

Bush arrives for a fund-raiser at a restaurant in the park. That is indoors and he doesn't have to worry about his feet there. But he has to go over ground to an administration building where he is to meet with families of 9/11 victims. After that, he has to go over more ground to get to the site of a memorial to the victims.

He doesn't want his feet on the ground and he will be at a groundbreaking ceremony.

The 9/11 memorial is not up. Someday it will be a site by a pond. What happened was that Bush was coming in for this big fund-raiser. The county executive, Suozzi, a Democrat, heard about it and rushed an invitation to Bush to be at the dedication to the memorial and also to meet the 9/11 families.

There was no way for Bush to turn this down. So he appears today for a local Democrat. The county Democrats fell all over themselves to have a memorial site and the paths around it following the Secret Service regulations.

Yesterday, a big guy, who had been fixing serious pipe leaks in the county executive's building, was on the walkway unrolling wooden storm fencing that would create an alley for Bush to walk down.

"When you get the fence up, what do you do?" he was asked.

"Cover the ground so his feet don't touch it."

"Is that true?"

"My boss told me that. If he says so, it's true."

"That sounds crazy."

"It sounds like I get paid every week," he said.

Bush's day was to start with him landing in his big plane at Republic Airport. He could either drive or go by helicopter to the park. There is room to land on one of Eisenhower Park's golf fairways. But the job of building whole concrete streets from the plane to the memorial site would be extraordinarily hard, as they would have to remove the streets immediately after today in order to have the place ready for golfers in this Republican county.

Bush was to move to a couple of locations on dirty parkland. Last Thursday, the bureaucrats in charge of the park heard from the Secret Service. The word immediately ran through the halls of local government.

Not a foot touches the earth.

And the workers went to work. First, there was the ground from a parking lot to a wood building used for special activities. This probably will be where Bush meets with the families.

"We're not even sure he will use this," a foreman said. "They just tell us he is going to meet with families. We ask, 'Where?' They won't tell us. So we went ahead, anyway."

They put up a concrete sidewalk from the parking lot to a ramp leading into a side entrance to the building.

The rain and sleet made it impossible for the concrete to dry. So they changed from concrete to the asphalt used on streets. They hoped the president wouldn't mind this. After all, it would protect his feet from touching the earth. Gravel and hot steaming asphalt.

When they finally had it done, a full-fledged asphalt path, a Secret Service agent put his foot through the steam and left a large footprint in the walk that was to keep the president's feet off the ground.

The Secret Service man walked on blithely. He gave no indication that he knew where he was. The workmen muttered and had to go back and fix the walk.

That is on one side of the building. At the front entrance, they built a standard concrete sidewalk through the ground to the entrance.

Down a slight slope from the building were two white tents. Nobody knows who they are for.

"The Secret Service don't tell us anything," a worker said.

"What do you do about the ground?" one of them was asked.

"We put wood chips there," he said.

"When do you do that?"

"When the Secret Service says."

The boss of the job was off to the side.

"They're not wood chips," he said. "They're fiber bark." He pointed over to a large county dump truck that carried enough fiber bark in it to cover the whole park.

Already, the dirt underneath the first of two tents was covered with fiber bark.

The walkway of storm fencing goes along the path that will be in high fiber for Bush and comes to the edge of the lake in the middle of the park.

This is the place where the 9/11 memorial will be built. Supposedly, Bush will not speak in public at the memorial service.

But you are going to have George Pataki and Rudolph Giuliani there. Both will walk through mud with bare feet for the chance to talk.

And that is my report from the ground on preparations for George W. Bush's visit of great magnitude to Eisenhower Public Park in the county of Nassau, New York.

w4rma,

Where have you been? I hope you have been well!

First, Jimmy Breslin is ........ well, a democratic operative. Has been for years.

Second, do you ever wear dress shoes? I do not anymore, but I AVOIDED bare dirt whenever I did wear them (and even dew-soaked grass). It is just annoying to clean them. And if he did walk in the exposed earth, then the press would exclaim that OUR President does not even have clean shoes!

Third, I suspect that this is SOP for the Secret Service. They need terra firma under their feet should something go wrong. What happens to bare dirt when it rains? Why, it turns to mud? Very bad for traction.

Finally, I have seen GWB working on the ranch standing on.......DIRT. Imagine that.

The silver spoon analogy will not work here (particularly if we start discussiing Gigolo Kerry)

I don't blame him, Bush gets his shoes custom made in Italy. Forget the guys name but he's pretty famous, he even did Saddams shoes. Throw in the $10k Oxxford suit and just be thankful that Bush is watching his dry cleaning bill.

Welcome back...I'm sure you've been quite busy.

For future reference, a little acetone makes bumper sticker removal much easier.

Anyway, glad you decided to bless us again on your rounds. Tell everyone at the 50 gazillion other forums you mass post in we said "Hi."

Well, 7.62FullMetalJacket, it appears that we agree that His Royal Highhorse sure won't be getting his feet muddy when he goes here for his photo opportunity. And it appears that he'll be billing us Americans for his trouble, again. Why aren't the Bush defenders here worried about the cost to American taxpayers for his photo opportunity? Where are the real conservatives?

Hey w4rma -- I was thinking of trying out a Lasercast 240grn RNFP with 10.7gr of Unique in my 1894 .44mag. Think that's a good starting load for me? I'm a little worried about trying this load out from a prone position, because the muzzleblast might kick up a little dirt.

Sorta like Hillary going into the Old Federal office building behind the whitehouse demanding the employees not look at her in the face.

Both stories have the same credibility.

I'm not going to vote for W, but this is just silly. All it does is make Bush look good compared to the pettiness of the author.

The left's hatred of Bush really reminds me of the right's hatred of Clinton. There is plenty of room for valid criticism of both men, but their detractors rabid hatred causes them to lose all discretion. They spew the half-baked and the petty along with the valid, and thus both men generally get passes from the public as people assume every criticism -- even the valid -- is just part of the same inanity.

A few gems buried in a pile of manure typically get ignored.

Thats Nuthin, I hear that His Lordship Prince Kerry, has bearers to carry him throught the campaign right into office.

The AFL-CIO Carters and Haulers, It seems No matter how many times He takes a big Greasy Dump on their heads, and then Urinates in their ears, They just keep on Kerrying him.

But heck when you have $1,100,000,000 in the bank you attact lots of strange friends. Even working folks who think that you are on their side despite a 20 year record to the contrary.

I just cant wait till folks start reviewing the Prince's Senate voting record, and all 3 of the Bills he has written or errr sponsored in 20 years in the Senate.

I cant wait to hear how he has all these great new ideas to fix all our problems. You know great ideas Like letting the UN handle the terrorists
(give Osama a seat on the security council), put the Sudan in charge of Human rights, Bring peace to the Korean Penninsula, Fix Lebanon, you know all thoes great things that the UN has done everywhere they were in charge in the last 45 years.

Hey he can give the middle class a tax break, and raise taxes on the rich folks (everyone who makes more than $15,000) a year. He can fix the healthcare system, so we are more like Britain, and Canada, and then Americans can go to hospitals there to get "World Class Treatment", and the rich folks from those countries will stop coming here for surgery.
He can use his experience in the Senate to Finally fix Social Security, I know he has some great ideas from all the good he has done while a senator!!!!

I wouldn't suggest using Unique in a rifle, BenW. That is a powder better used for pistols. There are many types of powder that will work better with your rifle, imho.

March 11, 2004, 01:46 PM
Actually Unique has been working quite well for me with lead bullets in the 1894, but I will say thank you for the response and I'm quite pleased to see a firearms related post from you. :D

You have to give him credit...it only took him a half hour to find an Alliant blurb that recommends Unique as a pistol powder.

BTW, Ben, 10.4 gr. Unique behind 255 gr. solids work great as a .45 Colt load in a 4 5/8" Blackhawk OR a lever gun.

Above load above SAAMI specs. Use at your own risk.

This claim is pure idiocy...it doesn't matter if it was about Kerry, Hi Chi Minh, or Mickey Mouse.

BS stupidity of this magnitude shouldn't slide anywhere. I guess blind hatred might skew some folks...in fact, I suppose current company proves that.

of course the article is a gutter slime piece, much more reminscient of something the RNC puts out and has little credibility coming from Breslin. More importantly, who really cares. But "stupidity of this magnitude" slides every day around here when the shoe is on the other foot, well at least in my limited experience here, maybe just cause it's an election year.

What's missing here is any hint that President Bush has any knowledge of the arrangements being made for the ceremony or that he ordered the walkways to be surfaced.

It seems pretty reasonable to me that, given the large number of people who will be travelling with the President (including a good number of reporters), that it would be a wise idea to surface the walkways so that they don't become muddy ruts that force hunderds of people onto the grass.

If you need a true example of supreme self-centered arrogance perhaps you should recall Bubba Klintoon's $235 haircut given onboard Air Force One at Los Angeles International Airport, which held up the flights of many hundereds of ordinary Americans for over 2 hours.

This article is a great example of the Orwellian rhetoric of the Democrats. Bush owns a Ranch in Texas and gets his boots muddy there every chance he gets, yet the Democrats try to twist the truth to make it appear that he doesn't even like to walk on grass.

Sick minded leftist propaganda from the Ministry of Truth's (i.e., the DNC) own Jimmy Breslin.

Lets see.....
Photo. (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/040311/ids_photos_ts/r1483666973.jpg)

Guess not.

W4RMA,

The logical conclusion we reach by looking at these photos are.

1. Your source isn't a very good one.

2. Your attempt at creating dissent amongst us is in vain.

3. Proves the lengths that the Democrats will go to to try and throw mud at the President.

BTW, in your article, not one single source is named, and the supposed sources say that "the secret service doesn't tell us anything."

Well, D'uh!!! You think that the Secret Service is going to tell everyone where the President is going to be standing prior to it happening?

Grow up, go back to the underground, and we will see you in November.
