Queen Elizabeth fumes at police officer's 'bloody gun' in the garden

LONDON (AFP) - Queen Elizabeth II was not amused when she bumped into a police officer on her private garden patio with a lethal sub-machine gun in his arms.

"She walked straight up to the officer, pointed at his gun, and said: 'You can take that bloody thing away'," the Sun newspaper quoted an unidentified source as saying.

The incident happened when the monarch returned to Buckingham Palace in February after a mid-winter break at Sandringham.

"It is the first time anyone can recall her using that kind of language to speak to a police officer," the source added Thursday. "She clearly was extremely frustrated at the in-you-face security in her own living quarters."

Neither Buckingham Palace nor the Metropolitan Police, which provides close-up security for the royal family, would comment on the Sun's report, saying they never discuss security matters.

But royal watchers said such an incident would be entirely in character for the famously unflappable queen, who turns 78 on April 21.

Last November she put her foot down when the US Secret Service wanted a helicopter gunship to hover non-stop over Buckingham Palace for the state visit of President George W. Bush. Too noisy, she reportedly protested.

Security around the royal family came under review last June after a stand-up comic gate-crashed a 21st birthday costume party for Prince William, the queen's grandson, at Windsor Castle.

The Sun said the police officer in the palace garden had a Heckler and Koch MP5, a black German-made 9-mm sub-machine gun that's popular not only with law enforcement agencies, but also with military commando units worldwide.

First, "bloody" is a contraction of, "by our Lady", meaning Mary, mother of Jesus. It is therefore considered blasphemous and profane, or was when it came into wide use. Few people know this today.

I am appalled at HM's behavior re the SMG issue. This, from a woman who once woke up to find a man (thankfully, an admirer) sitting ON HER BED?
I guess she doesn't like to be reminded that her world might be invaded by someone wanting to do harm.

The Royals are all pretty stuffed -shirt people who are self centered and spoiled, which explains much about why Prince Charles didn't have more time for Diana, whom he'd been pretty much forced to marry, as the next queen had to be a virgin at marriage, and all the girls he enjoyed dating, weren't.

I will say that I admired Prince Phillip's comment that the 1997 gun ban was ill-advised and wouldn't affect crime. He also shoots (hunts) as does Charles. The media hate them for that.

In all seriousness, yeah the Queen doesn't like guns (apparently) and she is the head of an institution that I don't see the relevance of any more. However, Mountbatten didn't deserve his death at the hands of the IRA, and according to some his death screwed not-so-Bonny Prince Charlie up no end.

Oh and bloody isn't really considered a strong word over here. Not by many I know anyway.

QuarterBoreGunner, there were both pies and marshmallow guns. The pies were the everyday weapons, and the marshmallow guns were the secret weapons of Bugsy's rival gang. One of the main subplots involves him trying to get hold of some. (The fact that I remember that much is kind of scaring me right now.) Anyway, the introduction of the marshmallow gun to the scene sort of mirrors the real-life introduction of the Thompson gun to 1920s gangland.
