Removing gun poop from clothing?

I always end up with black poop from my guns after shooting or cleaning.
What's the safest way to remove the stains? I have a feeling that brake cleaner may melt my 5.12 pants.

Try "Hints from Heloise" or "Ask Heloise" or whatever that column is called. She's probably got a website.
Better yet, ask her the question. Maybe she'll print it....
Besides, how do you notice black gun poop on black clothes?

Can't say as how I've ever had the normal laundering procedures fail me.
Sounds like you need to get yourself one of those aprons like the gunsmitchs wear.

1st of I don't think "poop" is the technical term for the "grime" or the "spatter" that gathers on the shooter/clothing...call it a guess :scrutiny:
2nd, I would think that your basic stain remover would generate the right chemical reaction to remove such stains. If not, maybe something like Simple Green would help.

Since most of it is caused by grease or a grease like substance, any normaly available dteregent for getting out grease stains should suffice just fine.

So if I toss it in the laundry next week (I have 3 weeks of underwear and socks) it'll be just like new?

:p Gun Poop? Try rubbing D&L ( or whatever brand) hand cleaner into the stain prior to washing. Works great oin motor oil/grease stains.

"Simple Green". Degreases most everything.

What's D&L?
Gun poop. Waste byproduct after feeding your firearm.
What's wrong with that term? :D

Try soaking it in Oxyclean for awhile, then wash it with Oxyclean too. :D

Yah. Oxyclean is good stuff.
Oxyclean is nothing new and fantastic, we've had crap like it for a while in the cleaning industry. Last time I went shooting I just got off work and had a white oxford shirt on. Black stuff was everywhere. I brought it to my parent's dry cleaners and had it laundered...came right out. There is no "grease" or "oil" based stain, to my knowledge. Although for such stains there is NO substitute for perchloroethelyne. I am not a proponent of any chemical that requires a mechanical action to remove a stain of any nature. Today's fabrics and dyes are far too delicate for such procedures. Hell, the most common thing I see is stains on silk sweaters worn by women. They are eating, drop something on the silk sweater (and I don't give a damn what brand it is) then dip a napkin in seltzer water and try to rub the stain out. In reality they rub the color right out of the sweater. So where there was a simple stain for us to handle turns into a garment with a huge white spot and there isn't much that can be done with it. We don't bother with re-coloring because it's friggin impossible to get a color match. I swear I see this at least twice a week, sometimes from customers I have told in the past not to attempt any self-spotting. :banghead:
Oh well, skunk...to answer your question... I have not attempted with any consumer strength detergents to remove "gun poop." However, with the stuff we use, I didn't even pre-treat the shirt :)

Try pre-treating it with laundry detergent ,before you wash it ,that should do the trick.:D

If you put a diaper on your gun, then maybe you won't have a problem with getting gun poop on you.

I *do* need to put a diaper on my USP - it likes to "poop" all over me. :p
I just plop all my clothes in the washer and clean them like I normally do - gunpowder doesn't seem to take any special care, at elast not on my clothes.
I haven't tried Oxyclean - I LOATHE that guy in the commercials. I'll never, ever buy one of those products just because of that annoying man. I hit the MUTE button when he pops up on TV. Makes me want to start dry firing at the screen, too.
Ink, OTOH, is hard. Every time my hand gets stamped at the gunshow, that ink rubs off on my clothes. I ended up with a blue smudge on a nice suede top once, grrrrrr..... I wised up and now dab the ink with a tissue so it's not so wet and nasty.

Knowing about our frequent trips to Switzerland, and fearing that my wife and I would wear our "Concealed Carry Clothiers" vests (She was right, we would have due to the many pockets.), the lady who owns the place told us to wash the vests at least twice before trying to board a plane while wearing them. It seems that the gun residue would light up the "explosive" detectors like a Christmas tree. We've decided to wear other vests~~just in case.

I don't know that I've ever gotten any kind of gunk on me from the gun while shooting, except with an old single action .45 I use to have. What is the stuff and where is it coming from? Could b your piece is over-greased? Or is mine undergreased?

runt: That's why they've come out with Clorox Oxygen Action (http://www.cloroxoxygen.com/), same type of product, no annoying spokesman. ;)
Be careful with the oxygen based detergents though, they will fade your clothes over time.

Negative, I was wearing my black HK polo. It helps me shoot more accurately and faster, but the stain was on my pants when I was cleaning in the kitchen when I got home.
I'll toss them in the wash tonite and see what happens.

Is Oxyclean and all the other stuff mentioned safe on all materials, namely cotton, polyester and nylon?
I have a shirt that's all black in the shoulder from my M1A kicking back oil on my shirt (and on my face but that's OK)

just rub the muzzle in it. eventually the gun will learn that pooping all over you is a bad thing. :D

They come out smelling just right. Like a freshly cleaned gun on a sunny spring morning.

I sell chemicals to the drycleaning industry...here's the skinny:
You've got some solvent soluble components(oils and grease) to the stain that a good degreaser will remove. You've also got some insoluble stains(carbon based..nitro-cellulose) that can't be easily removed without a good lubricant (liqiud detergents have these).
Go with a good degreaser (citrus based) and be careful with flushing certain solvents in the the waste-stream. Apply degreaser and liq. detergent and wash as normal on the warmest water cycle and most aggressive aggitation the garment will stand.
If that doesn't do it...let me know.
Worse case..take them to your cleaner and let them know what it is.
OxyClean can make clothes look dingey because they tend to remove optical brighteners that are applied by the manufacturers to enhance brightness. OxyClean is also somewhat alkaline by nature and should be neutralized prior to drying...won't get that by them though!
Man, I gotta quit! You guys are yawning!!!

If you want to get Oxyclean on the cheap, get some monosodium perborate from a local chemical supplier. It's usually around 25 cents a pound, and is the same stuff as the Oxyclean. I buy it in 50lb. bags and use it to clean out cooling towers :). The Oxyclean folks must be making a killing, they sell it for about $10/4lbs, a 10x markup must be nice!
Simple Green is just a heavy duty butyl cleaner, it should work on most grease and wax. Citrus terpene stuff works good too, and generally smells better.

OK after diligently reading the thread this far, no one has come up with what I truly believe to be the best answer of them all.....
(Drum roll please..DRDRDRRDDRRDRDRDRDDRDRDR)
Use the same chemicals you use to clean the... ah. ...well, afore mentioned "poop" off your favorite duds as you use to clean it off your fav-or-ite shootin' iron.
Clean clothes; clean gun; same bottle; same smell. All is right in the world. It just don't get better than that.
Skunk: now THATS tactical!
Back to your regularly scheduled postings.
P.S. #9 Does make great aftershave.

Wet with a little water, and then pretreat with Shout Stain Stick.
If that doesn't get it out, it's likely in to stay.
