I'm going to load some 158gr JHP's in 38 spl. I'm looking for a upper mid range load that'll be shot from 2" to 4" revolvers. I like HS6 for this, but I'm getting a little low on it and may try to use something else I have on hand.

I'm thinking IMR 4756. It's a good powder in 40 and 45. I don't recall any big muzzle flash.

Others:
HP38. Used it before but was thinking something a bit slower would be better w/ a warm load and 158gr bullet.

Longshot. I have some, but haven't fooled with it. I'm a little worried about big muzzle flash. Anyone know?

I know it will be mentioned…I don’t have any Unique.

Thanks Much!

Stay away from the longshot. If your not deaf after 2 rounds, youll most certainly be blind, and if your lucky your guns in 1 peice. IMO, its a pretty peaky powder.
Used HS-6 in the past. Burns cleaner the hotter you go. Settled on AA#5

So Longshot won't be the best choice for a ported 2" barrel. :)

Thanks for the info.

My favorite for 38 spcl 158 gr. JHP, is Longshot. It produces +P performance, and doesn't present any pressure issues in getting up there to that level.

IMR 4756IMR 4756 is very position sensitive. Don't download it in this application.

I agree HS-6 is best for what you're loading and Longshot will be closest to HS-6's performance in this application. It is louder than other powders but you should be wearing ear protection anyway. With 158gr jacketed bullet I get good results with Longshot in the .38 Special, .38 Special +P.
