I finally won something! (sort of)

Last weekend the Utah Defensive Pistol League held a blizzarded-out handgun match, man-on-man format (where you both have plate racks or arrays of falling steel poppers) and then a "stop plate" with overlapping falling poppers in case of a close matchup. Lots of fun. I shot my trusty German SIG P226 in 9mm.

They tried a new handicap system this time to try to even out the odds for people with revolvers, open guns, etc. First, they divided all shooters into 3 groups, the "expert" or master level shooters (basically all the really fast guys) in one group, the marksman or sharpshooter or unclassified shooters with reasonable skill and experience in the second group (mine), and the new guys or inexperienced/unclassified shooters in the third group.

Then, on each stage, open guns got a 1 second delayed "second beep" from the timer, and 8 shot revolvers got one plate removed from both sides, and 6 shot revolvers got 2 plates removed. I think it balanced out fairly well.

Despite having to do the "IDPA sweep" to clear my outer coat for each draw(it was COLD!), I only lost one matchup all day (IIRC) to a guy shooting "open" (whom I later beat twice, by the skin of my teeth). I won 2 of the three stages and I think I took third or fourth in the other one. Results were just posted and turns out the open guy I beat in my two stage wins took 2nd in all three stages so with the way the brackets were scored, he ended up with 38 total points and I got 35. So I guess I really didn't win. But I was excited that I won 2 out of three stages.

Yaaaaaay me! :D

3.8 grains Red Dot, MBC 124 grain SmallBall (sized .358"), 1.09" OAL, CCI SPP, mixed brass. Very accurate in my pistols. I doubt it would make minor PF, though. :)

They make enough power to knock over the plate, thats all that matters! Good shootin too, btw.

From the looks of the video, I would dare say wussies need not apply. ;)

You could not pay me to get out of bed on a day like that, much less get outside.... I'm just too accustomed to warm, Texas weather.

It was actually pretty balmy compared to last year's New Year's Day 3-gun... it was -3f when I got in the car that morning. The cold is doable... the blowing snow and wind gets old quick, though.

Thanks for posting the video and nice job.

Did you notice if other shooters were having gun issues due to the extreme cold? What about lube?

Only issues I noticed were FTFs and assorted jams likely caused by improperly loaded ammunition (too long OAL, etc.). My pistol ran like a top all day, as did most others'.

No squibs this time out, thankfully. Last match there was a guy in my squad who bought gun show reloads :banghead::eek::uhoh: and I had to loan him a brass rod 4 times to remove squibs. Luckily none made it far enough into the barrel to allow full chambering of the next round.:uhoh:
