I have been asking about this bullet for quite some since Speer is replacing their value Hot Core bullet with it. Information on them is still quite limited so I decided to post my findings today, I loaded them in the 6.5x55 since my brother has kidnapped my 30-06. Overall the accuracy was excellent with a broad range of RL22 powder charges, it shot .626" with 42.5gr, .508" with 44.5gr and a .499" group with 46.6gr loaded to 3.095". While that always has been an accurate rifle, shooting around the 1/2" mark with such a broad range of powder charges 1st time out is impressive even by Tikka standards. I did not notice any increase in pressure like Speer was talking about, but the ones I got are the coated in 6.5mm I am not sure if my uncoated 270, 7mm and 30 cals will be the same, I'll keep you posted. At published modern action max loads they did not even exhibit any pressure signs and I am quite thrilled with that. Really impressed I cannot wait to work them up in the 06 and 270 WSM.

Interesting bullets. Is the tip flat like a GS? Always liked that feature.

Now I just need to find a very large hog and shoot him lengthwise so I can get expansion and weight retention data, if the cup and core bullets I have used are any indication a bonded 140gr bullet should drive through just about any game.

Kachok:

Thanks for the report on the Speer "Deep Curl" projectiles. I just ordered 1,000 projectiles in .243 caliber, 80 grains. Once they get here, and my reloading dies arrive, I can test some out. I'll post an update at that time.

What is the beat source for load data on them?

Go to Speer's website. They have a section specific for the Deep Curl projectile.

The Deep Curl bullet is the same one used in Federal Fusion ammo.

Just a quick update, I got to try out the DCs in my super picky 7mm-08 and they performed great as well. My Browning has to be the most bullet picky rifle on the planet and for it to shoot them nice and tight speaks volumes about this bullet, really impressed. No sign of any pressure increase with the uncoated bullet either, worked it up like any other 160gr flat base bullet. Did not get the chance to try them in the 06, my SIL shot her fist sub 1/2" group with it the other day and she has been crazy about that gun ever since, I don't think I am getting that one back LOL

I have long been a fan of the Hot Core. I had an amazing experience with the HC back in the 1980's elk hunting, and have been hooked on them ever since. I lucked out and was drawn for a bull elk in N. Arizona. So I worked up a 130 gr. for my Rem. 700 in .270 win. with some IMR-4350. With a near max. charge, I was getting consistent 1/2" groups @ approx. 3150 fps..
So on the last day of the hunt I nailed a bull at about 100 yds.. Because it was the last day of the hunt I didn't want to risk waiting for a better shot, so I was forced to shoot him with his butt facing me. The bullet traveled straight up the spine, right above the bung hole. It went through every single vertebrae, it finally came to a halt at the base of his neck. When I retrieved the bullet, it was nicely mushroomed, and didn't fragment or separate at all, not at all. I tossed it on the scale and it had retained some 93% of it's weight. The 7% of lost weight was pretty much what smeared on vertebrae throughout the wound cavity, but no real fragmenting.
Earlier that year I shot an antelope with the same load at over 500 yds, talk about accurate bullets. I put that bullet right through the pump station. I was unable to retrieve that bullet though, it went through and through, and left an nice soft ball sized exit wound.
I have been trying to find those DC's for the .270, 7 mag, and now a 6mm I recently got my hands on. I can't wait to give them a try and will post the range, or hunting results as soon as I get some.
Thanks for the heads up on your experience with them!

Glad you found this helpful :D Wish I still had my 7mm Rem Mag so I could give you some pointers but I sold my last one some years ago.
Yeah I am going to miss the Hot-Cores, they always have been a tough reliable value bullet but if they had to replace them the Deep Curl appears to be a worthy successor. Some may not like the flat tip and flat base in this area of boat tail poly tips but I like them and think they will be particularity well suited to magnum rifles given their tough construction and protected point.

The Deep Curl is a purpose built deep penetrating wide expansion bullet best suited to sub 3000fps speeds so I would think it ideal for a 30-06 if you were hunting thick bodied game. I doubt it would cause the trauma a Ballistic Tip would going through a small bodied deer but I imagine the meat damage would be a bit less too. Looking at some reports from other hunters 70-90% weight retention is the norm for standard calibers, high speed magnums can drop that to the 60% range. I am trying to find a detailed ballistic gel test of one of the rifle bullets but have yet to find one. Reviews from hunters have all been positive though, all I know from personal experience at the moment is they are fantastic at the range, I would rank them right up there with the legendary SGK for superb accuracy in a hunting bullet.

I have been loading them for the .357 mag. and they perform very well. Looking at one, I can't tell the difference between them and the Gold Dot in the .357 mag. It has me thinking the rifle version might be the same story compared to the HC. With that said, do they look identical to the HC on the exterior?
