If you're reloading today...

Post up so I know I'm in good company. :)
Bit on the chilly side today (28F and windy), so I decided to stay in and make ammo.
I often sit at my bench, loading ammo, and wonder "how many other guys are sitting at there bench right now across America, doing the same thing?"
I'm off to finish a run of 8x57mm I was working on last night. Got all the case prep done on a batch of 400 last night, now just need to primer, powder, and seat.
Off to the bench....

If I wouldn't have picked up another PT job I would be at the bench tinkering around or cruising around for stuff I need in the future. But when the the jobs are honest and the pay is honestly pitiful you got to work as much as you can to afford more toys.
So Im physically at work, but right now my heart is at the reloading bench, and tinkering around with my traps getting them cleaned up and put to storage until fall.

I load them ahead of 16.5 gr RL-7 and get 1650 to 1700 fps.
Here is a representative target. They shoot better than this, but I took a couple 20 round mags and shot fast fire. 5 shots at each aim point.
Makes a good blasting round that can hit what your blasting.

Just finished priming 75 rounds of .223. Been chipping away at developing a new load for my RRA 20" bull barrel AR using 69 gr SMK and Reloader 15 powder. I've got it narrowed down to somewhere between 25.8 gr to 26.2 gr. I'm loading up 3 sets of 5 rounds at 1 grain increments. Spent some time that I usually don't prepping my brass. Got everything trimmed to uniform length and turned the necks last night. I'm hoping all the time spent prepping brass will pay off. I've had some pretty good results up to this point, but they've been somewhat sporadic, so I'm hoping the additional time with brass prep will even things out.

Had to load SOME of them in to the belt.. ;)
And what's left...
http://i.imgur.com/AwyRm3Fl.jpg
The upside down ones in the box are "accidents"... trimmed .020" under trim-to length. Wasn't paying attention; I'd swapped my cutter head last night after I finished, back to my 30 cal, planning on trimming some 308 today. As it turns out I found 33 more 1x 8mm for this batch and decided to "catch them up".
Something didn't feel quite right as the spirals of metal kept going.. and going.. and going... The cutter head I have for 30 cal is .20 longer than the one I use for 8mm. I didn't stop and think "something's wrong!" until I'd done a few. :(
The two with the sharpied noses in the belt are also "whoopses" - was testing different seating depths vs. feed reliability in my M76 (no difference) so the first two rounds I loaded short (wait a minute, these don't look right...)... won't hurt, since I'm not bumping against max, but I figured I'd mark them and use them as sighters.

FINALLY got my 8x57mm done.
Funny thing, I had to re-seat all the bullets.
There was a REASON I had my seating die cranked down .... I got to thinking about it, and pulled my Yugo M76 out to test one of the rounds in it. Chambered fine, but had to whack it open with a rubber mallet to get the round out. Was fully engaged in the lands!
The Sierra book calls for 3.115" on 200 gr. MK .323 in 8x57, but my rifle has a short throat. Had to go back through and seat them all deeper to 3.080" to avoid jamming bullets in to the lands.
I'm glad I caught that, as I had another 200 rounds sitting on the shelf loaded which were all too long to shoot in the M76. Got a nice little workout there, re-seating 490 frigging bullets deeper. :(

Oh, there's two, one split, one whole. The whole one is on the inside, needed another partial "layer" to make it fit snug.
There's about 1.5", it's sticking out maybe 3/8"?

Looks like we were working on a similar load. I worked up to 16.6 of 2400, but settled on 16.3 grain load. It is the most accurate in my GP-100's.

I'm in central Virginia, so it's not like there's three feet of snow on the ground, but it is DARN cold in the office (garage). But just so peaceful because, other than my dog, no one is crazy enough to spend more than 10 seconds out there. And of course I'm not burning through my cache, so when family members expect to see an ammo arsenal....you have to explain the many, many hours that are required to devote to the study, technique, and execution of the reloading process. The cold is all part of the discipline.
A little heavy handed on the bs, but at least I'm in control of what happens in my own little reloading tundra.

I have loaded 125JHP up to 16.8gr of 2400. I believe I have seen published max up to 17.5 (HOLY CROW!) I found that my favorite load is 16.2-16.3. Thats about what my powder measure will average. Lots of flash and boom, moderate recoil, and I believe as much power as a person probably needs out of a 357.

Thats my load right there! lol. My favorite load for a 158gr bullet, either jacketed or lead in 357 with 2400 is 14.5gr. For some reason that charge weight is clean burning, accurate, and a thumper with any bullet of that weight, jacketed or not.

Unique is one of my favorite powders. I recently switched to Bullseye in 45ACP, that is an equally favorite powder now. It meters VERY consistently (more so than Unique).
At least I'm done with 8mm for a while.
I *really* need to get the conversion for my Dillon to crank out belt fed food faster! (And a non-stick powder that meters clean without bridging.. IMR 4064 is HORRIBLE at bridging...Varget isn't too much better.)
