Any recommendations on where to find IPSC or IDPA in Southern NY?

Also, what's the differences between IPSC and IDPA?

Thanks!

Irv,
I don't know what southern NY has to offer for the sports. However I'll take a shot at answering your second question.

I'd recommend that you take a look at the different sports websites. www.idpa.com I don't know USPSC's website. Also, do a search on this forum for IDPA or USPSC. There is typically a debate on both sports because they both have similar histories and similar objectives yet go about it differently.

I have shot idpa but haven't shot the other sport.

Both are similar in that you move through a stage and shoot the threat targets and don't shoot the non-threat targets. each target is designated threat or non-threat. The basic similarity is that both sports present the shooter with a scenario that requires the participant to plan a strategy to get through a stage and then put that plan into action as quickly as possible.

Both sports have different categories that various types of handguns fall into. IDPA has Stock Service Pistol, Custom Defensive Pistol, Enhanced Service Pistol and Stock Service Revolver, er something like that. USPSC has Open Class (anything goes), Limited Class (no 11+ magazines), Production Class, I think.

IDPA puts more restrictions on the equipment that you can use in order to mimic concealed carry and defensive shooting situations. Therefore, no scopes, etc on your pistol. Holsters and ammunition carriers have to be on an approved list determined by IDPA's headquarters and typically have a smaller number of rounds fired for each stage.

I chose to participate in IDPA because I found that I needed less gear to get started. Eye and ear protection, standard production firearm 9mm or 38 special or larger, 4-6 speedloaders/magazines, holster, ammunition carrier, flashlight for some stages, jacket or vest for concealment. Pretty much all of my IDPA gear can do double duty for practice needs and CCW purposes. I didn't need to get a custom tuned 1911 design with a scope, compensator, etc. In all fairness, I believe that USPSC does have a production class that fills the same niche that IDPA fills as far as using a production firearm in the class.

Both are action packed, exciting pistol sports that are a lot of fun. I would encourage you to give one or both sports a try. I'm not going waste time and efford to knock one over the other. I'd encourage anyone with an interest in firearms and competitionto try one or both sports. Both sports have their naysayers but you may as well debate which is better, golf, baseball, football etc. The imporant thing is that you find the sport that you enjoy best.

Good luck.

Cortland County Pistol Club is very active and has a lot of IDPA matches. I shot a tactical shotgun match there over labor day weekend and had so much fun that I shot it again in the afternoon. After 240 rounds I headed back to Phila. I believe they can be found at the IDPA website. There is an active IPSC club in the Binghampton area which I believe is in USPSA area 7 Check USPSA site.

www.uspsa.org Go there, use the club finder. As far as less gear to get started in IDPA, here's what you need for USPSA(IPSC).
1. IDPA legal handgun and holster.
2. 2 more magazines than IDPA, 5 total will get you through.
3. the extra mag pouches to carry them, or not. Pockets work.

Go shoot both and have fun.

There are several clubs in the mid hudson area that shoot IDPA and/or IPSC. Dutchess County Pistol Association (IDPA and IPSC), Northern Westchester Rifle Association(IPSC), Waterveliet in AlbanyIPSC. There is also Cos Cobb, LongIsland Practical Shooters Association, and SaraSpa Rod And Gun (IDPA).
Check the IDPA and USPSA web sites. The USPSA/IPSC district for NY is Area 7. You can Also check with Downzero (http://www.downzero.com)
