San Luis Obispo, CA Meet?

March 12, 2004, 05:45 PM
45R and I were thinking of meeting each other half way and get our gats on.

Date and details are uncertain but it'll probably happen. Who's in?

I might be in. How far is it away from OC?

March 12, 2004, 10:31 PM
I thought about going for about a half a second, but at 335 miles it's a little out of a reach...especially with gas prices as they are.

Bay Area or Sacramento and I'll be there.

March 15, 2004, 11:32 PM
YES YES YES!!! SLO right here!!!
I'm coming definitely if it happens!
Woohoo, finally a shoot only 20 minutes away instead of 4 hours!
Plus I get to meet the Skunky and 45R, cool!

March 16, 2004, 06:36 AM
I might be in... I live in Camarillo but I'm originally from SLO. What range? Hwy 1?

Question: If you live in Orange Co. why SLO?

I usually shoot at ASR, maybe we can get a So. CA Shoot going sometime.

March 16, 2004, 10:15 AM
SLO because 45R is in Sacramento, so we're meeting each other half way.

We don't know the area well and the recon skunks haven't reported back. We think the coyotes have a battery of SSMs (surface to skunk missiles) somewhere along the 101 freeway....

50 Shooter
March 16, 2004, 11:51 AM

I'll be shooting this Sunday at ASR, look for all the BIG rifles at the far end of the rifle range. If you want to shoot a .50 just ask and if you want to come out and shoot, come on. We bring out other stuff besides our .50's.

March 16, 2004, 04:09 PM
Thanks for the invite 50 Shooter! I've wanted to make your shoots for a while now, but... I've been fighting the urge. I think, no, I know, that once I get a taste of shooting a .50 cal, I won't be able to turn back. My "Passion" for firearms will indeed turn into a full-fledged addiction. My wife is cool with my shooting & collecting, and is also aware of the "need" of a Fifty. Our anniversary will coincide timewise with a Re-Fi on the casa... so I'm thinking I might be able to divert some funds towards a Fifty, especially if her anniversary gift has a couple of carats of Sparkly on it! :D

Sorry for highjacking your thread guys.

March 16, 2004, 04:13 PM
Hey Combat-Wombat: Are you and your Dad members of the Santa Lucia Sportsman's Association? If not, where do you shoot? If you're interested, I can take you one time as a guest, to check out the range sometime.

March 16, 2004, 04:25 PM
Yep, we're members of the Santa Lucia Sportsmen Association. We haven't been shooting for, like, 5 months 'cause my dad has been really busy, but we go up there every once in a while

March 16, 2004, 10:42 PM
Wouldent Somewhere like Fresno, or Coalinga be centerally located as well as much easier to get to? The central coast is one of those "you cant get there from here" kinda places.

Coalinga has a 1000 yard range.

I think this meet is for both norcal and socal people. :)

Over on Cal-Guns they have a big shoot coming up for Central/Norcal called "Shooting Man". You can look into that also

Sorry for the thread hi-jack but more people from the PRK need to get together and shoot.

How does Mid-May look for everyone interested?

March 21, 2004, 10:18 AM
Mid-May sounds good. Memorial day is the last Monday FWIW.

Is this going to be a two or three day thang?

March 21, 2004, 12:04 PM
Is this going to be a two or three day thang?

I wonder if everyone is as tactically prepared as you for that much time away from home. :D

(sorry, just a neighbor butting in!):p

March 21, 2004, 06:43 PM
There's a three gun match May 30th at Ione. That would be a good place to meet/get together.

mabe we can go out to the los padres forest. That way, we can set up some targets and no stupid range rules. I used to go to a place up on the slo grade when I worked at camp slo. I dont know if it is still open up there. But there is lots of places out that way.:D :D

April 8, 2004, 04:35 PM
Yo, Stevo...

I think that's a pretty good idea. I've always been to ranges, never jusut to some area somewhere to shoot. I think that would be great... range rules can get so annoying.

Work Schedule permitting.... Coming from the Vallejo area.... Anyone want to car pool?

Sgt Stevo
April 12, 2004, 12:25 AM
I can drive from Campbell, if you can get here from the north bay. Wombat, can you ask around for a good place to shoot. Not on a range. that way, .50 cal weapons would not be an issue. As well as the usual rules of ranges. And your shoulder gets tougher everytime you abuse it. Trust me. I will bring the Ten Bore for ya. PM Sven and the guys. See if they want to go. If we find a good enough place. I can teach some movement to contact stuff as well. Just dont shoot me.

April 12, 2004, 12:56 AM
Depending on which weekend, maybe - I have a graduation to go to in San Diego over Mother's Day and there's an IDPA regional at Prado in Chino two weeks later.

April 12, 2004, 01:34 PM

What's new with you?

April 13, 2004, 12:40 AM
I'm thinking about something like:

Friday: arrive at campsite, spend the night
Saturday: Have lunch in town. Shoot in the afternoon. Dinner in town. Go back to campsite and spend the night.
Sunday: Go home in the AM.

Folks come and go as they please--not everyone will have time to shoot, maybe folks will want to shoot, but not camp.

April 13, 2004, 02:07 AM
I might be up for this; depends on the timing. Carpool from the bay area sounds like a good idea. I travel light since I don't have too many toys. :)

April 13, 2004, 04:24 AM
Sorry gents, but the place I think you're referring to on the Cuesta Grade has been closed for several years now. They probably closed it because of too much trash & debris.

Sgt Stevo: How many years ago did you shoot up on the Grade?

Maybe something out near Pozo or Turkey Flats area. Plenty of place to camp, but places to shoot are getting scarce. This would also be a full on campout situation, since town is at least a half an hour to forty five minutes away. I went out there a few years back, and one of my favorite spots was fenced off. Maybe a local can do some recon of the area.

April 13, 2004, 01:40 PM
If we could camp out and talk tacticality with everyone before the shoot, that would be great...

We just need to find a place to go. I'm leaning towards the national forest idea, no stupid range rules and we could just camp there. Of course, that would be a little further away from town and I don't know of any good specific locations to shoot.

April 13, 2004, 10:18 PM
Pipsqueak- if this comes together and I'm still out of work (fingers crossed I won't be) we can do the carpool thing.

...and the Prophesy did tell of one Who’s Bore was ¼ that Did Gun. And a Black Chariot With Full Tyme Four Wheel Drive he did Ride. And many were the Pre-Ban Fiery Swords With Infernal Magazines that he carried forth… And I say unto thee The Recoil Was Good!

April 14, 2004, 12:19 AM
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four Berettas, and I looked and behold, a black skunk, and his name that said on him was Tactical. And carbon followed with him.
Skunky 4:26

Sgt Stevo
April 14, 2004, 02:07 AM
It is ok to shoot almost anywere in the national forest. Just have to be safe and smart about it. YOu going quarter bore? It would be cool if all the guys from up here did a convoy thing. Considering the amount of toys we all bring. I know I am a paranoid Army puke, but it is better to travel in a group.

Sgt Stevo
April 14, 2004, 02:14 AM
I train at this hole called camp Roberts. I can get us in with my ID. I know civilians hunt there.

April 14, 2004, 06:45 PM
Eventhought a national forest does not have stupid range rules. However, I think assault weapons does not go well with BLM's folks.

You may want to keep that in mind....
The Bureau of Land Management California policy is to allow the use of firearms on public lands, as provided for in state law, and to cooperate with state authorities in the enforcement of firearms regulations. Federal lands managed by the BLM in California are generally closed to the possession of assault weapons, as defined by state law: However, BLM Field Managers, after consultation with the State Office and the public, may designate specific areas, through issuance of specific authorization, where state defined assault weapons may be utilized. This would be under authority of the Recreation and Public Purposes Act. Such authorizations will require compliance with the appropriate regulations and state laws. The authorizations will contain safety conditions, including liability insurance. Authorization will specifically require that it will be the responsibility of the lessee to ensure adherence to state law regarding assault weapon use at these specially authorized areas

April 14, 2004, 06:51 PM
With that being said... may be this is not a bad place...

I wish that I can make it.

There's an internal memo out that specifically states that you can shoot AW's that are "legally registered" on BLM land. It was posted on Cal Guns, you'll have to search the site to find it.

Here's the direct link.

April 14, 2004, 08:14 PM
50 Shooter,

Thanks for the note and clarification. I'll sure to keep that handy.

April 15, 2004, 01:12 AM
Set tentatively for May 21-23.

Arrive 21, at night.

Hike on the 22th, AM. Lunch offsite somewhere in town. Shoot in the afternoon. Dinner in town in the evening, then get back to the campsite. BS, thump chest, debate 9mm vs 45, maybe make smores or something.

Depart 23th, AM.

Post edited to update dates.

The SL range on Hwy 1 just about 2 miles south of Morro Bay and the state park is pretty, has some LONG ranges and the Hogue company sponsers a very nice action pistol range there.

When a group of us camped at the park while attending the International Revolver Championship we were welcomed by the staff and had no problems with being able to clean and tune our guns in open. Of course we all had friendly revolvers and not evil black rifles.

If you go in June you can probably see Jerry Miculek doing his thing for the news media, using a revolver to imitate a machine gun. The IRC is in June and he is usually there and the news media usually track him down. Other notables and the Shooting USA crew will probably be there as well.

If my finances ever get in order I might even be able to talk my wife heading down.

The SLO range off of Hwy 1 IS nice with a friendly staff.

I highly recommend this place as a rally point.

This range has a pistol range out to 50yds (used to have a bunch of blue bells for plinking out to 50yds). For rifles, we can have out to ~300yds if you choose to use paper targets. Past 125yds there are steel plates to plink at out to 400yds with the 400yd plate being a "gong". Past that the only other target is a "gong" set out to +800yds.

Due to the nature of the cargo, I think 45R and I would rather stay on county rather than state and federal campsites, if I have the laws straight, or am I all backwards???

Which of these would y'all recommend? How does the Santa Margarita Park sound?

Santa Margarita Lake Regional Park Trails
Grey Pine: 3.7 miles, moderate, hiking/equestrian
Lone Pine: 2.1 miles, strenuous, hiking/equestrian
Vaca Flat: 2.6 miles, easy, multi-use
Lakeside: 1.5 miles, easy, hiking/mountain bikes
Valley Oak: 2.0 miles, moderate, multi-use, access to trailheads Blinn and Sandstone
Blinn: 9 miles, moderate to strenuous, multi-use
Sandstone: 6 miles, moderate to strenuous, multi-use
East River Road: 10 miles east of Santa Margarita Lake
Rocky: 2.0 miles, moderate to strenuous, multi-use

And can I get a headcount?

The lady at the campsite called me back.

Guns are AOK just "keep it on the DL" (down-low), i.e. no prancing around with our M-14s :D

She's going to mail me back some paperwork with some area maps then I'll hold at least 2 spots. Each spot will support 2 cars or up to 8 operators. We'll have adjacent spots. Now I just need a headcount.

April 22, 2004, 08:40 PM

I'll have you know, that I do not *prance*.

I may shimmy and occasionally I may glide, but prance...NEVER.

Besides the M14 has big feet. I like the dainty AR as a dance partner better.

Sell my Beautiful Big-footed Jewish American Princess?* NEVER.

When the foot has to come down, I *LIKE* a big foot.

*DISCLAIMER: Before unwanted assumptions are made, let it be known that my 'Beautiful Big-footed Jewish American Princess' is one of the M1As that Springfield Armory made for the Israeli Defense Forces as their squad sniper rifle, then re-imported to the CONUS when they changed over to M40 types rifles. Just wish I read Hebrew so I could decipher all of the ordnance marks on the darn thing…

pipsqueak, whatcha havin' done on your M14/M1A?

April 24, 2004, 10:53 PM
Just having it built up with some iron work done to keep it lightweight but a bit more accurate than a GI rack gun. Consider it the ersatz HP match rifle. :D

April 25, 2004, 12:16 PM
$22, each space supports 2 vehicles ($16 for site, $6 for reservation fee)
extra vehicle is $7.

So, 1st car = $22. 2nd car, 1st spot= $29
3rd car 2nd spot = $22, 4th car 2nd spot = $29, etc.
I think.

April 25, 2004, 05:51 PM
