Has anyone gone to the trouble of getting a Chicago CFP since they passed the new ordinance? Is there pending litigation? I'm wondering if it would be a waste of time to get one only to have it overturned a few months later. Between the class and the city fee it would be a couple hundred dollars and most of a day.

I have mine. In regards to pending litigation, none that I can think of. But you may want to check over at http://illinoiscarry.com .

What questions are you curious about?

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any recommendations on where to get the required training? How quickly did the city process your application?

For the class, I suggest Illinois Gun Works. It is the easiest one to get to from within the city.

After I turned in the paper work, if I recall correctly, it was like two or three weeks later I got it. Every firearm I've registered has been pretty much exactly two weeks.

BTW the second Chicago Firearms Meetup is happening in about two weeks. It is the 21st of this month at the Billy Goat at 330 South Wells Street at 18:00.

Definitely come out. We would like to have more people there. Last time we had 6.

One more follow-up: Does the registration form nowadays maintain the concept of an unregisterable firearm? I don't mean by type, but if you had registered something in the past, but failed to re-register it at some point, is it still unregisterable?

I honestly don't remember with out looking into it. I want to say it is something you would want to move out of the city for a while, before bringing it back in and registering it. Unfortunately that is something I am not to knowledgeable of.

Check out the http://illinoiscarry.com for more info on that. I believe I've seen something along those lines few months back.

Thanks. I reread the ordinance and it looks like all of the registration BS is still in there. Back under the old rules I had trouble registering a shotgun I bought in my youth when I lived in a different state. It was first denied, then I had to have an administrative hearing where I eventually prevailed. For all of the time I wasted I would have been better off just buying something new. I guess that's a good excuse to get a new gun. They may give me trouble for not filing an appropriate disposition form after failing to reregister it. The hoops they have you jump through really add up. It's just a mechanism to discourage gun ownership and has almost nothing to do with safety.
