Just call RCBS tomorrow and they'll send you the replacement parts at no charge. Just be prepared to spend some time on hold, since they've been really busy, just like everyone else in the business.

Hope this helps.

That doesn't look like an RCBS decap rod. I don't remember them making one with a separate expender like pictured in 1981.

You need the decapping stem, the decapping pin and the nut for the pin. CALL (do NOT email) RCBS and they'll send you all the parts new, usually for free. You can also request a few extra pins which will make your boss happy.

BTW, this happens because the RCBS dies don't precisely center the decapping pin. Roll the repaired die on a table top and see for yourself.

The reason you broke it is because you had it screwed in too far.

The pin went through the flash hole.
Then the end of the expander hit the inside of the case head.

Then you kept insisting it was gonna go in there kicking and screaming all the way!!

As a result, the decapping stem buckled in two places and broke off the pin.

When you get the new one?
Adjust it in the case just far enough to knock out the old primer.
Without hitting bottom and folding up like an accordion.

And if you can't get through, you can order a 5-pack of them from Midway for something like $2.50.

Meanwhile call your boss and tell him you were kidnapped by aliens but should be able to escape in a few days.

If you're decapping military cases with crimped primers, buy a Lee Universal Decapper die and save yourself the headaches.

It looks like you need the whole decapper rod not just the pins. But get some pins too while you are at it. They are a consumable item in .223 when sizing military or range brass because of the crimps on the primers. Follow RCmodel advice when adjusting the new one. It just has to be long enough to deprime the case. Make sure there is a case in it when you lock it down so it will be centered.

I've damaged RCBS dies and they replaced the parts for free. I'll recommend them to anyone.

If I may add, after you have talked to them and they have taken care of your needs, take the time to tell them how much all us reloaders appreciate them and their tireless efforts to make us happy customers.:)

I'm kinda like KP321, that rod looks different. I'm thinking it may be their carbide expander ball, which floats on the stem, if I remember correctly. If so, Rookies boss will want it replaced, in kind. They are a little pricey, but should still be covered under warrenty. Lightman

Edit to add, Grandpa has made a good point!

I got through to them today, took about 23 minutes.

The guy on the phone was very nice, and very helpful. Said they changed things in 83 and the one I need is out of stock right now, but he'd have it shipped to me free of charge, as well as an extra pack of pins.

Top notch company! Very pleased.

I once found a die that was misshapen. It would not work. I bought it used, and am sure the first buyer just did not want the hassle so he wrapped it up in packaging tape and sold it. It was RCBS and I wrote them, told them the whole story. They sent me a completely new die that works! They didn't even need the bad die.

Most of the time RCBS dies work so slick you wonder how much they polish things before they send them out.

RCBS Customer Service is unequalled. When I broke the recapping assembly on my 1979 vintage .308 Win die because I was stupid and didn't look to determine if the case I was decapping might have been Berdan-primed...I had a new one with a spare pack of pins in 3 days. Those folks are the best!

Maybe I'll call them.... I emailed twice via 2 methods a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard a peep. Why have the email option if you won't answer?

Every company seems to be extremely busy these days. It's possible it could take them several days just to get to your email because they are so backed up. I'm just guessing but i have normally gotten quick answers by email but like I said, everyone seems overwhelmed these days.

Sure you can and then pay an extra $3 because you didn't spend $25 and them pay $6 or more S&H so that $2.50 item will cost you $11.50 or more. Not a good deal IMO.

After I got a case stuck (spindle did not survive my attempts to remove it) I replaced it with one of the X-spindles and have not looked back. Neck expansion seems more even as well.

Call or e-mail RCBS (calling will at least let you know that someone got the message, but I have e-mailed and had no problems) and tell them you need a complete new decapping pin and they will send you one, yes, for FREE! I bought a used set of dies and they had a bent rod, a quick e-mail to RCBS and I got a new one in the mail. Unlike Lee, which has the worst customer (dis)service in the industry, only slightly behind computers and electronics companies, RCBS, Redding, Forster, Dillon, Lyman ACTUALLY STAND BEHIND THEIR EQUIPMENT!

I've had good luck with lee. I mangled the large primer ram and they shipped me one for free, no questions.

I'll call RCBS next time I have a while to sit on hold. I like their products and have several of their tools. their heavy-duty universal decapping die RULES for military .30 cal.

My '80's vintage 357 die set had the decapper in the expander die and I wanted to switch it to the sizer die. RCBS sent me the decapping stem gratis.

Follow up: I called RCBS custserv just now, waited 6 minutes on hold, and they're sending me a replacement decapping pin/rod gratis. Thanks RCBS!

(Can I mention how good it feels to not be the new guy asking all of these quistions most of the time?)

Yes, they will send it, but in the meantime, I have found you can use the pin from another die to fill in. When I broke my .45 pin, I used the one from my .308 dies.

No... if you're addressing me. The expander ball for a larger caliber won't enter the neck of .223 case. Plus my .223 die is made in 1977, and they changed the design in 85. Plus I don't have any other RCBS sizing dies.

I don't have any from that era. I'm at work in draper, I even would have run one over to you.

I have had nothing but trouble with RCBS decappers. I always use Lee. One Berdan sneaking into the bag is enough to annihilate the RCBS pin in a second. Sometimes even Boxer primers in military rounds will give them real trouble. Lee, OTOH is extremely hard to break.
