Got a Marlin 833SS. It is a beautiful rifle with a great trigger. However, the rear site is loose in its slot which is cut into the barrel. Subsequently the site moves freely and slides out. How can I tighten it so that it will not move?

NOTE: The gun is NOT under warranty so it is a fix-it-yourself job. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.....

There are several ways you can accomplish this:

Easiest and most safe if you aren't a gunsmith-type would be to buy a new rear sight assembly with a set screw to hold it in place.

Otherwise, you can peen either the sight or the slot to make the sight tighter, but keep in mind that just like anything else, you can mess this up and mar your nice rifle a bit.

amflyer told you right. Take out the rear sight and do your peening so the top of the site will cover it when its reinstalled. It doesn't take much either. You can also use a center punch and tap dimples in the bottom of the sight groove and this will also raise the metal a little. Just don't dimple it so hard you make a tight spot in the barrel. You are not likely to do that anyway.

Some people will dimple the barrel down on the site after the gun has been sighted in so the sight will never move on them. But if its tight you shouldn't have to do this.

There are far better ways than to peen it.I personally would try to glue it in place with "Green Loctite" or drill and tap a hole for a small allen set screw.I would seek the advice of a gunsmith or a machinist if I were not comfortable with either of the above fixes.:)

Perfect excuse to head on over to Skinner Sights and get yourself their Barrel Mounted Peep Sight (http://www.skinnersights.com/barrel_mount_6.html). It slides right into the dovetail and has a set screw to keep it their. Between that and a little Loctite, you should be all set!

Beer can shim stock? Depends on the sight base and how loose it is. I have had decent results using a small piece of aluminum shim stock.

That or as suggested replace it with a sight having a set screw.
