Question on Hornady LNL

March 14, 2013, 10:45 AM
I observed some movement in the dies when reloading with my Hornady LNL. A close inspection of the press shows some wear where the bushings lock into the press. Photos below are of the die slots with the press turned upside down. Some of the bearing surfaces appear very worn and some appear normal. This is true on all 5 die stations. Is this type of wear a problem? Can it be corrected? Thank you.

How many rounds do you have on your press?....How old is it?....I'll check mine when I get home to see what mine looks have some good pics there I would definately give Hornady a call.....the dies shouldn't move and that problem will only continue to get worse as the movement will continue to cause wear....

The press is only about 3 years old. Less than 20,000 rounds on it.

The lugs of the L N L bushings appear to be worn or broken off. You need to call Hornady customer service; more than likely they will replace them for you, as well as give you instructions on how to remove the damaged bushings and install the replacements.

If they do not provide the instructions, be sure to ask about the procedure. While it isn't complicated, I would recommend hearing it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I believe it just involves using the matching bushing that goes on one of your dies and inserting it from the bottom to allow you break the bushing loose, enabling you to unscrew the bushing from the press.

Full disclosure - I haven't had to do this; I just remember the procedure being mentioned in the forum, hence my recommendation to call Hornady customer service. I believe a while back they received a batch of bushings that weren't up to spec; your press may have been equipped with bushings from that batch.

One of mine started to unscrew. I'm going to try a little locktite on it to see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks for the replies. I called Hornady, and they are going to send replacement "press bushings." The Hornady Tech said that press bushing wear is unusual. It is not a part that should need to be periodically replaced.

Glad they solved the problem quickly. Did they tell you how to remove old ones and install new ones so they will be tight?

When you set your dies do you set them to over-cam?

I just looked at mine and they all look like new. I have several thousand rounds loaded on it now. I don't keep count. Probably around half of your press.

IIRC there were some bad bushing that made it out to the public, some started to look like that with very few rounds loaded. Hornady has been replaceing them.
