An email to my mentor

My reloading mentor is a gentleman about 20 years older than I. He insisted that I save myself some money in my shooting habit by learning to reload.
He has done a fine job teaching me a lot of what he knows, and I have tried to be a good student.
He recently took me up to the next rung on the ladder by teaching me casting.
I have begun the quest to replicate his casting set up as best as I can.
I have made a few great finds thus far, with a set back or two.

I sent him this email yesterday, and he responded, giving me a warm feeling and a good chuckle. I thought I'd share it here.

To D:
Spent an hour or so the other day on the net tracking down the pot, the cast iron, the molds, la la la....
Spent about 1 1/2 hours yesterday digging through the lead dumpster for WW's.
The lee pot order fell through this morning, I found one used on ebay, ordered it, paid too much.
Decided all of this **** was for not if I don't do a little plinking.
So I treated myself to a little shooting at the outdoor range this afternoon. Next thing you know, I kill another hour picking out farkin' lead in the backstop.
Dude, putting holes in cans is a lot of ***damn work.

Maybe we could just find them with the holes in them already and be done with this crap. ;-)

From D to me:
Joe, there's a burgeoning philosopher in you working to get free. You have the makings of a first class curmudgeon/geezer/coot. We will be happy to welcome you to the fold when you come of age. But remember I haven't taught you the secret handshake yet.

Heh, good deal.
I swear I'm going to resume what I used to do in the "old" days.. a cubic foot and a half or so of bull pine will hold way more than a thousand hits of 9mm/.38.. throw in wood stove to reclaim and repeat.

Im younger, but sitting at the top of the proverbial hill and teetering on the edge, however all of my shooting and reloading friends are 20 years or more older than me. I like it just fine that way. I find lots of reasons to shut up and listen. Its amazing what a fella can learn that way. Seems you understand that well OP!
