Got my Holy Grail Gun today! Sig 551!

March 14, 2013, 03:01 PM
After a lifetime of waiting I finally scored what I consider to be my Holy Grail of firearms, an all original Sig 551-2 SP SWAT!

The only reason I never owned one of these is the fact that they've always been way out of my price range. It was pure dumb luck that I managed to finally get one. I ended up trading an FN FNC for this Sig and I couldn't be happier with the trade! I only paid about $2,100 for the FNC and I was going to sell it because it was never very in love with it. The Sig 550/551 has always been my favorite military style carbine of all time and I've owned a couple Sig 556's but it's just not the same as owning the real thing.

This particular one is a pre-ban former LE firearm and is in remarkably good condition. The barrel is 14.5" with a 2" extension added to the flash hider making it the legal length. The extension is not welded to the barrel but it's permanently attached unless you cut the weld on the extension itself. This means that if (or I should say when) I go the SBR route with this gun I will not have to do anything to alter the rifle, only just make a cut to the extension piece itself and bingo instant SBR!

Here are a bunch of pics, I guess I got a little carried away in all my excitement:D

Do they accept regular AR mags or only propriety Sig line of mags.?

They do have similar features of the AK like the bolt handle and mag release.

I'm jealous.

I'm pretty sure you can also get an auto-sear for those for ~$7,000-9,000 if you look around the NFA boards. They literally made a bunch a couple days before the registry closed. The Sigs came in around late April or early May 1986 and a couple gunsmiths scrambled to make them full-auto.

I went through selection process about six years ago. The winner was K2 which in semi-auto version of battle rifle (unlike other stuff out there the only difference from military gun is trigger has to be pulled every time for gun to go off) was only $900 like new. The folding stock design is second to none and stainless long piston along with rotating bolt design is IMPOSSIBLE to beat. The SIG is good tool but very expensive for what you get.

I know nothing of this gun, but it reminds me quite a bit of the H&K rifles... The sights in particular. Any connection between this and H&K? Beautiful rifle!

SWEET GUN! And nice pics!

Congratulations! Now get out and shoot it. :)

I like those, plain and simple and they shoot great as I understand it.

you should be able to move the trigger guard to the side completely, so better access to trigger when wearing gloves during the winter.

The swiss make excellent rifles.

That is a nice piece indeed!

I'm always effen jealous of your there a way to subscribe to other members? You, Sir, have great taste. A SIG 552 is one of my holy grail guns. Now if you want to really impress me get yourself one of the Chilean FAMAE S.A.F. submachine guns based off the SIG 55x-series!

Sweet, especially your pics of the new gun. I can see why it was your Grail Gun; a very clean, well built design. Enjoy.

Nice rifle. Hope it makes you happy.

I love it. I am a huge fan of the Sig 55x rifles. I was torn between the Sig and an Hk MR556, I went the Hk route. Seeing this Sig makes me think I need Enjoy it and be proud, that is a fine piece of machinery.

This was my grail gun back before the 1994 ban when, I believe, we saw the end of any new ones...551 that is. Didn't have near enough money, the AR platform was more or less just as "exotic" on the market back then (let's say 1990 or so) and I wanted that Swiss craftmanship.

Very very nice.

Congratulations! Very nice looking gun. Looking forward to the range report.

That is definitely 'grail-worthy'. I must admit that I am envious (except that it's not left-handed but that's just me).
Congratulation on the buy.

Very nice.

Not my "grail gun", but I wouldn't turn a 551 down, either.

I know nothing of this gun, but it reminds me quite a bit of the H&K rifles... The sights in particular. Any connection between this and H&K?

The 551 is more similar to the FN FAL.

So sweet!!!! That's a chunk of changes right there. Congrats!

Good score on both counts, the rifle and the pics.

That thing is beautiful, I love the look of purpose it has. Nice pics, someone is a photog :-)

Very cool gun. I was lucky enough to get a chance to shoot an LE dealer sample 552 once. Have fun with it!

Nothing to add, just want to bump this thread to the top.

Rare bird you've got there.

March 18, 2013, 10:15 AM
WOW, good score. love it.

March 18, 2013, 01:08 PM
Very cool rifle... great pics, too. Congrats. What's the difference 'twixt that and the 556? Guy in my squad at a 3-gun Saturday shot a 556.

Beautiful. Timing wasn't right for me when Mr. Otte made these available. Now that he's in the business of importing, we should have more of a window on some of these Swiss Sweeties. I lucked out equally with the 552.
I'm a new member here and thank you all for your posts. It seems like when I'm researching a new purchase, I find the most knowlegeable and civilized posts here on THR -so, I finally made it!
