So I have a extra ruger 10/22 stock and I would like to know how to go about cutting it down to properly fit my daughters grip . This will be twice as nice because I also have twin boys who will eventually use this as well. I'm pretty good with tools so that's not a problem but just trying to see if anyone has done this or has any good pointers. She's excited to go shooting with daddy but can't till she gets the rules down first. And has a stock to fit. I should mention this is only going to be for target practice and bench shooting.

Consider looking at an adjustable stock (as much as I hate them, tacikool..)
they are useful because they expand to fit a growing child.

Luke, it's not hard, key being to keep the pitch (angle) of the cut square to the axis. Should take a while to set up the cut by using a vice to hold the stock and taping off the exact area.

I'm going to move this to Gunsmithing to get you more specific guidance.

Luke, if you do not mind me asking how old is your daughter? The reason I ask is I had a baby girl yesterday and I just cannot wait to introduce her to the hobby...I know I am getting ahead of myself.

Years back I shortened a shotgun for my eight year old to use for his first deer hunt.We cut the stock down by four inches in one inch increments on a compound miter saw.We saved the cut off sections to add back when he got bigger.I found some hard rubber the same thickness as the saw blade and used it for spacers when we reinstalled the sections as he grew.I did have to fit a new butt pad each time the stock grew,but it looks better than an adjustable stock.Now that he has outgrown the little 20 gauge,my wife uses it for a turkey gun.It took a little work,but made for a great father/son project,and didn't cost much.

The problem you will have cutting a standard 10/22 stock is the factory butt-plate is curved + wraps over the top of the stock, and you won't be able to use it again on the straight-cut stock.

So you will need to acquire a flat butt plate or butt pad and shape it to the smaller stock couture after you shorten it.

I put an ATI stock on one of my 10-22's for the grand kids, The telescoping butt piece will fit any size kid and it's pretty decent quality. Keep your old stock and when the kids grow up you can put it back on if you don't like the AR style stock.

Try the ATI stock. I hated it myself but it worked well for my youngest boy. He still has it.
