If so-any pet load data out there? I realize you data could be different than mine, just looking to see if anyone out there favors 3031 to other powders.

I like 3031 with the 150 grain round nose soft point bullet for deer. I've got an old surplus Mauser action on a sort of beater stock, with a 3-9 power scope (just so I can tell if there are horns on the deer!), and it works well with the 150 grain bullet and 40 grains of 3031. I haven't chronographed the load, but it puts out a good 3-shot group every year when I sight in, and I usually plink a little with it maybe five or six times a year, just to keep fresh. The load works well for me.

I bought a couple pounds of this as a dual purpose powder for my .30-06 and my .45-70. Have yet to load any though.

There is plenty of load data in Lyman's 49th for 3031 in .308, I would assume it is a decent choice.

I use 3031 for my swedish mauser and my FAL. Even at max listed load with 147 gr. bullets it is just over 45k pressure, and I want to keep my pressures low as I have a rebarreled kimber m96 in .308....that action SHOULD be ok at .308 pressures of 50k+, but why chance it.

44 gr. of IMR3031 with a 150 gr. Sierra flatbase will drive nails in any .308 I've tried that recipe in.

I've used 3031 powder in .300 Savage and '06 for years now, with 150 gr. bullets, powder ought to work in your .308 also.

IMO 3031 is too fast a powder for the .308 considering there are so many better suited powders being manufactured today. Is there a specific reason why you want to use 3031 other than the obvious reason of very little powder availability?

With 3031 you end up hitting the pressure limits well before you reach acceptable velocities, especially with heavier bullets. If you can find some IMR4895, H4895, IMR4064, Varget, BL-C(2), AA2495, AA2520 or other powders in that burn rate range I think you will do much better.

BUT, if IMR3031 is all you can find right now the only way to really find out if your rifle likes that powder with the bullet you choose is to load some up and give them a try...

I use 42.5 grains of 3031 behind a 150 SP Hornady bullet. Its great for deer, hogs, and antelope. Its a hard hitting round with a nice recoil to it.

ArchAngelCD,
I've got 3, 1lb containers laying around for years and a bunch of prep'd 308 casings. Wonder if others liked the combination.
