Haven't seen one in person, but it looks like it's just plastic on the end. Correct?

Correct.
The back of a collaspable stock is hard plastic very similar to the butt of any other stock AR15 or M16.
I have seen slip on pads for sale from aftermarket companies. I don't really see the point, but they are available.

On a .223? My 6.5x55 Swede has a metal butt. No biggie. Our DI put a full mag of M-16 downrange firing from his nether region to show us that it wasn't gonna bite. Also put some rounds through a steel pot helmet at 50 meters, THAT gave us a lot to think about. We were in M60's at the time so steel pots were the least of our worries! Suprised he didn't put some .223 through the tank... God bless the M1!

No buttpad = another sort of weapon when you're out of ammo.

Can you really buttstroke someone with a collapsible stock?

Why not? It's perfectly conceivable that you could be buttstroked by a salad fork or a piece of celery, too. You CAN do just about anything you want.

I'd rather buttstroke somebody with a $30 part that might break than worry about it and get attacked by the person that didn't stop after I shot him 30 times!
