TLR-1 LED on the way for my XD9

March 25, 2013, 09:22 AM
Can't wait. :)

I've heard nothing but good about this little light. Hopefuly run-times will be decent with the LED as opposed to the incandescent bulb.

My XD has the 5" barrel, which puts the light's bezel at or a bit behind the muzzle if I'm not mistaken.

Should add some nice heft and reduce a bit of muzzle flip, too.

Anyone have any good leads/experiences on a open-carry type of holster for the XD with a light? I'm not looking to conceal at all. Looking for something like a cowboy holster for an auto. Doesn't need to be tacticool, but I would like it if the hoster was easy to put on in a hurry.

Oh, and I'm a lefty.

There are not a lot of leather holsters for light equipped pistols, though there are several duty holster makers that have them.

Safariland is always a good place to start for light capable holsters, though I don't know much about their product line-up. I think they may have leather and kydex options.

Leather options are

Davis Leather

Top kydex makers are

Raven Concealment Systems makes light capable holsters, but their's lean more towards concealment.

Be aware, a light capable holster will not work well, if at all, without the light attached.

Good to know about the holsters not really working without the light. This is my go-to bedside, defense gun, so the light is going to be a pretty permanent upgrade. Time to light up the night. :)

Thanks for all the links. I'll check those out.

I can't speak to the holsters, but I can tell you that little light sure is bright indoors, especially if you're going from totally dark. The reflection from walls is quite high, I was surprised. But I still think its a great light.

Check out Contact! Concealment

The guy who runs it (by himself I think) is absolute class. When I had an issue with a glock holster iwb he told me to keep it and use it owb and rushed me a custom iwb 2 days later FREE

and his craftsmanship is too notch, I love the way the pistol clicks in

Man-o-man. Got the light in the mail yesterday. That is one Sweet little rig!

Quality seems very high, and light's output does not dissapoint.

Got a chance to use it last night, as i had a range session already planned. First impression is that it adds a bit of noticable weight, but it adds it exactly where you want it. Muzzle flip was noticably decreased. Activation on my XD was very easy for me, and for the other shooter who was with me who's hands are a bit smaller.

I tried to get some pics of it. Not a pro, sorry! haha...
For me, the activation button is in the perfect spot.

It can't be seen from the pics, but the leading edge of the light is almost exactly the same length as the muzzle of the gun. Might be a hair behind it, actually. (as in a few mm's)

Rock solid. Very easy to use, and it literally lights up the night out where we are because there are very few street/house lights.

It is really a great light, and I am sure you will be happy with it. Don't rule out concealing it, it's really not that hard in a good holster.

I can give you an opinion on the Streamlight light since I own and use several.

My gun lights are the Streamlight TLR-2 laser/light. (I practice a lot with the laser/lights, in low light and dark, home range)

I have the TLR-2 on many guns, from shotguns to handguns and never had the first problem. The battery life is fairly long.

Some examples.

AR HD gun. (

S&W M&P 15-22. Stand in sometimes for .223 AR during night time laser/light practice because it's more neighbor friendly.:) And just a fun gun to shoot. (

PX4 nightstand gun. (

CZ P40. 2nd nightstand gun. (

Kel Tec PLR. Fun gun. (

820 Shotgun. Inside HD gun. The Streamlight holds up fine with the shotgun's recoil. (

TLR-2 equipped Ruger 22/45. Used as a flashlight, with a handy gun attached, for around the place at night. Using the laser/light in the dark hits at 35 yards are easy. (
