Outstanding! That is truly a thing of beauty. Regardless of whose it is, it would be a true joy to shoot it, handle it, and just generally enjoy it!

Treasure hunting in your own house is freakin' awesome. :D

I can't say I found something quite as nice as that but once I found 12 sterling silver goblets in my garage (old box a relative asked me to store). She told me to keep them. :)

Backstory please.
It belongs to the widow of a local FFL/gunsmith. She found it under her bed. I am helping her to appraise it and sell it. It's an exceptional gun and I thought I would share some pics of it here.

For a real treat, last month she found this box.

Sweet. How much did you value it at?

March 29, 2013, 11:43 PM
That's really hard to say. There is book value and there is actual value. I have been looking to see what something comparable has sold for recently. The only thing I can find on gunbroker but both are fairly well used and without all the accessories and selling for ~$3,500

You need to check old CMP auctions.

Yes but i don't think CMP has had any in years. The 1987 recipt for this one says $1,025, but that's not much of a starting point.

This sale was in 2007, I can't tell from the acution if it was a SA. the bags were never opened on it.

The shots of that beautiful M-1 only brought a smile to my face.:)
Not envy, as I already have a Garand, but the photos increase the desire to acquire a second (only from the CMP), after they catch up on their work this spring.

Orkan's funny raccoon photo was also entertaining.

Werent many of these in Korean arsenal supplied to them during the 50s , 60s and 70s?

Color me jealous. I have an M1D with an aftermarket barrel and a SA receiver about 200,000 after that one, plus a reproduction M84 scope, but I only have $1300 into my setup and I can shoot it as much as I want.

A great find.

I admit when I first saw the top half of the initial pic I thought it was a Smithfield ham. They often come in white bags.

Forget about any book value or Gunbroker comparison.
That set up is unique.

Personally my asking price wouldn't start any lower than $5,000 and maybe I'd ask more.

Unfired. Complete documentation. It's all there as if it was an orginal arms room issue.

Call one or 2 of the top end auction houses.

Looks like the rifle my brother-in-law got maybe 15 years ago from the DCM program. You tossed your name in a raffle type deal and if you were picked you could buy one complete just like the one pictured. After seeing what Mike got I tried but never got my name picked. :(

Really nice! Enjoy it!

Either late 80's or early 90's the CMP had lotteries on M1D's. It is my recollection that everything sold in the lotteries, like the box, and the sealed components, look like yours.

I highly recommend never firing the thing .The paperwork adds considerable value because M1D's are not difficult to make. Barrels, scopes have been available for decades, the paperwork shows it is a real GI issue rifle. Without paperwork, who knows.

My gun club president has built several faux M1D's from parts he accumulated over the years. Has built up a number of faux rifles, including this Marine Sniper. The parts are all real, but the rifle was not assembled till this millennium.

This was also won in a CMP lottery:

The owners of these say they will be available once they are pried from their Cold Dead Hands. It will be a great estate sale. :D

If you'd like to sign a 2 year lease you can keep it at the end of the term.

Try Elephant and Castle in Ozark, MO. They might be able to help you value it.
