The AK Picture Thread...

Every now and again, I see threads pop up with questions about various Kalashnikovs. It got me to wondering just how many people here actually own an AK in any various form or another?

Factory original, home-built, personally modified, etc....
It doesn't matter.
I'm just trying to see how few, or how many, of you are out there?

If you have one, let's see it!
:D

Just to get the ball rolling....here's mine:

Here's my sole (for the time being) AK - a 7.62x39mm Russian Izhmash Saiga.

It started life as an IZ-132 sporter, but I converted her myself to this:

http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff427/Fishbed77/DSC_0002-rotated_zps6832e8ba.jpg

Here are the parts I used:

-Tapco G2 trigger group (modified by CSS for a Saiga bolt hold-open)
-KVAR Warsaw-length stock
-CSS bullet guide kit
-CSS trigger guard
-US Palm AK Battle Grip
-Izhmash AK-47 gas tube
-KVAR US-made polymer handguards
-CSS bolt-on handguard retainer
-Surplus Russian sling

I plan on threading the barrel and adding a muzzle brake (either AK-351 or slant) in the near future.

That looks like an AK74 butt stock on yours?
I never knew if they'd fit an AK47 or not.
Great looking build!

If you swap out your front sight block with a threaded type, you can mount a bayonet if you feel like it, and also swap out muzzle brakes and flash hiders at will.

Thanks! The Saigas are AK-100 series rifles, which are based on the AK-74 (even the 7.62x39mm commercial Saiga and military AK-103). Note the squared-off gas block.

That said, the stock I used will fit on most stamped receiver AKs. It's a KVAR stock that I believe is based on the Bulgarian pattern. I chose it because it's high-quality and lightweight, and has the general "look" of an AK-103/AK-74M folding stock, without needing the modifications required to attach a true AK-100 series polymer folding stock (which was beyond my capabilities or budget).

If you swap out your front sight block with a threaded type, you can mount a bayonet if you feel like it, and also swap out muzzle brakes and flash hiders at will.

I considered this, but I have no need for a bayonet mount, don't want to tackle removal & replacement of the gas block and front sight, and I don't really desire a long, heavy 74-style muzzle brake. I figure I will keep it simple and just thread the barrel for 14x1 LH attachments.

1-1 Banger,

While I like the AK100 series folders the best, as they are really just a folding "fixed" stock, Ive always found the Romanian/German wire side folders to be the best for the money. They simply swap out with the standard fixed stocks, open one handed, are rock solid, open or closed, have the correct LOP, allow access to the controls while folded, and give a good, natural cheek weld.

Only 7 prototypes of this new Arsenal USA model were made in 2002. These 5.45 caliber rifles are built on FEG receivers using Bulgarian AK-74 parts and US trigger groups.

Global Trades gave this rifle life as a fixed-stock 74, somewhere along the line somebody changed it to the SF you see here. Absolutely sweet, just about shoots itself, lightest recoil of all the AK's I own.

Thanks Jackdaddy. This was my first and only AK 47. Everyone told me to stay away from the Wasr when I was looking but I took a chance and have been very happy with it. It runs like a champ and is supprisingly accurate despite the rumors that it isn't an accurate rifle. Its a blast to shoot and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.

I'm getting ready to try a new butt stock on mine.
This will be the 5th one this rifle has had.....lol
Hopefully this will be it...ha ha ha

Mine started off in life as an all Bulgarian SLR-95 like this during the dreaded Clinton years:

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t532/479WAbd/slr95left_zpsfa749be1.jpg

Got rid of the thumbhole stock after installing the appropriate number of 922r parts and tried a metal stock first. Hated it.
Then tried a NATO length stock. Too long for me.
Now has a WARSAW length stock. Slightly too short for me.

Just ordered an "intermediate" length stock that splits the difference between WARSAW and NATO and also has the storage compartment in the butt plate for the AK tool kit.
"Maybe" this will finally do it.....lol

I was fine with the NATO length at first when I installed it one Spring.
Ran with it for about 6 months or so with no problems at all.
Then Winter came.
Once I put on my thick, heavy Winter coat to go out shooting, I noticed the longer NATO was giving me trouble trying to shoulder it while wearing bulky clothes.
Would probably still be just fine for somebody with longer arms than me though.

Have you thought about a quality collapsible? A Vltor or Rifle Dynamics AR stock adapter would be a light, durable way to get a collapsible stock on there.

Love the AFG, Inebriated. Great choice, and great rifle.

Thanks, I love the feel. I've actually reverted to the factory K-Var handguards (for the millionth time), due to the weight of the MI handguards, but I do shoot the gun a little better with the AFG. I really do just need a second AK so I can get both setups.

Some of the guns in this thread look nice too with AR type stocks.
That's not what I mean really.
It's just a personal quirk thing for me I guess.

When the stocks are collapsed, they look pretty nice.
But when they are extended for use, seeing that buffer tube sticking out the rear of a gun that doesn't even use one just seems "odd" to me, for lack of a better way to put it.

Don't think of it as a buffer tube, then. Think of it as a storage tube.

I put a Tapco T6 on my I.O. AK and added a vertical foregrip. I would never go back to a fixed stock or remove the vertical grip now. The ergos are 100x better now and the gun is much more manageable when firing.

The AR style stock grows on you too and looks fine. Form follows function and to non gun guys the adjustable stock is cool.

I was just trying to convince you that the AR style stock is a good option, especially if the rifle will be fired by more than one shooter. Modern rifles should fit you, not the other way around.

Keep us posted, the top cover seems like a great idea, but I feel like it just can't compete with the repeatability of the Kreb's. And is the forend aluminum or polymer? I've been really liking the modular rails lately.

The cover locks in solid, believe me. I've heard a lot of good things about it holding zero without issue. I just want to see that for myself to actually believe it. The forend is definitely aluminum and not polymer.

That said, if the dust cover shows the slightest signs of losing zero, I will have no issue ditching it and picking up a RS 310 mount.

Really nice looking rifle you got there Adam. :D

(aka Pappa Clarence)

haha Well, it's a small world, now isn't it?

For those curious, the M10 is the brainchild of Clarence. I found it on GB and got in contact with him immediately. I've been wanting to setup a rifle just like this for quite some time, but never got around to it. Clarence is the man.

Adam, why did you put the rear sight that far forward?

There are a couple of reasons.

One - the front sight was canted and the the left bracket of the RSB was coming into the sight picture. Moving it forward allowed me to keep that annoyance out of view.

Two - I am sure that the popular belief is that a longer sight radius enhances accuracy, but I could not disagree more when it comes to this type of sighting system. Farther back allows for faster target acquisition and less precision. Farther forward allows for more precision, but creates a considerable loss in the speed in which a target can be acquired. Obviously, it can be too far forward and too far back. That is where shooter preference comes into play.

Currently the rifle is off to JBI Armory to have the front sight/gas block straightened. When I get the rifle back, I am sure that I will move the rear peep sight back a bit, but definitely not all the way.

It WAS an absolute joy to shoot. I took it to the range twice and tucked it away. Then, someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I sold it. No worries though, I have another just like it and plan on picking up a couple of 20" square-backed VEPRs when prices get back to normal. I'd like to do the same thing with a Type 2 square-back and I think it would provide a bit better accuracy due to the stiffer barrel. In my opinion 20" is the sweet spot for 54R.

23" VEPR - 7.62x54R

NICE! That's very close to what I've had in mind for my .308 21" Saiga, except for getting rid of the front sight to install a reflex suppressor. Adjustable Magpul-style AR stock is high on my wish list, after years of frustration with the highly unergonomic thumbhole stock.

Hmm. Maybe I should take a few photos of my AK-derivatives. Saigas, FEGs and AJ/Kassnars are pretty common but I didn't see a pic of Sako M92S in this thread.

Here's a photo of the same Saiga I showed in Post #8. I've since threaded the barrel to accept an AK-351 brake (which I highly recommend, as it tames recoil noticeably, isn't terribly loud, and is much shorter and lighter than a -74 style brake). I've also installed a Magpul AK grip (which I prefer to the US Palm grip previously installed):

I have one of the AK74 type brakes on my Krebs AK103K, and Im about to replace it with a flash suppressor. The gun is a ban era rifle, and the flash suppressors were still verboten at the time I got it.

The 74 brakes do work at reducing muzzle rise, but they are flashy, especially with the 14" barrel the AK103K has. Its not so obvious in bright sun light, but get in the shadows, or any low light/dark environment, and it looks like a tank is being fired. :)

The extra noise of the brake gets to me. I have a 74-style brake on my 7.62x39 (pg 3), and while I love the look and the recoil reduction, the increased sound level really bugs me. Eventually I will get a 24x1RH flash hider to replace my brake.

I really dont notice that the 74 brake is all that loud. Nothing like a couple of AR's I have that came with brakes.

They were very annoying, especially if you were on either side of the gun when it was shot.

I filed them off right quick and replaced them with flash suppressors.

Very nice. Newer type flash suppressor instead of the three-prong one and... is that factory original folding stock? Folders aren't very common, I've been looking one for years and even RK95TP-type replacement stocks (for modifying M92S) go for $500+ nowadays.

IMO these rifles are the only "AK:s" you really need, I shot several <3" 10 shot groups at 150m/164yd with my issued mid-60's vintage iron sight RK62 back in the day. That, however, hasn't prevented me from wanting and buying a number of other, more traditional AK:s over the years. ;)

Yugo RPK, numbers matching kit on a number matching NDS receiver

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/RPK-14052a.jpg

The Hungarians all built from AMD-65 kits with a few Romanian AKM gas tubes & chrome lined barrels except the pistol at the bottom, it's all original AMD-65 parts except the receiver & gas tube.

This one is actually a MAK-90 with the AKU-94 kit ... I keep thinking I'll put it back in its original furniture and build a Romanian or something for the kit, but it hasn't happened yet.

Anyone else having Super Vepr envy?

For sure! I love the idea of firing 7.62x54R ammo out of an AK platform!

Once I put on my thick, heavy Winter coat to go out shooting, I noticed the longer NATO was giving me trouble trying to shoulder it while wearing bulky clothes. Now you understand why the Russian guns have such short stocks :)

Specs can be found here: http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171103
Adam, love it, my question is what is that thing at the bottom of the receiver around the magazine? Some kind of magwell?

Its the only thing I don't care for, but maybe I'd change my mind if it really helps when changing mags

Edit, I should contribute a photo:

There are some amazing AK builds in this thread. Some are so nice they no longer look like an AK. I'm almost embarrassed to post my simple rifle. All I did to mine is stain the wood, change the flash hider, change the grip and add a red dot w/mount. I also added an East German surplus front night site I bought about 6 years ago. It shoots well and it's fun to shoot too...

ifit, . . . . . . . looks like you win!

Good god, man, . . . you have some NICE rifles. The SVD, of course, but that super VEPR looks incredible, . . . . .as does the 74. I hope my brother doesn't see your post. Jealousy would slap him square in the face.

BTW, all I have is a very simple Saiga with Tapco plastic. Boring. Reliable and pretty accurate, though. I did the conversion on my own.

What about AK cousins?

Let's not forget the Daewoo DR-200 & AR-110C with its AK gas system and AR fire control group
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/FamilyDaewoo.jpg

What about the SiG-551, 552, 553 & 556 and especially the 556R which uses AK mags & shoots 7.62x39 ammo
The SiG-55X line is AK's on the inside, just more refined on the outside ;)

SiG-551
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/P6130689.jpg

SiG-552
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/552-2_P1010566.jpg

SiG-553
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/553P-SBR.jpg

SiG-556

SiG-556R
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/P3260094.jpg

Then there is the HK-32 (POF clone really) ... Ok, the mag & ammo is the only thing that ties it to the AK ...
I know, it's an illegitimate conception because HK aborted it before it got into full production, but since it exists ... isn't that enough?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/image-2.jpg

I'm guessing that the 7.62x39 AR doesn't count even though it shoots the same Commie round and the only good mags have the AK mag shape.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/kimberkid/Toys/762x39_Bushy.jpg

The lines are getting blurry ... I think it sounds like a liberal agenda:cuss:

Awesome collections kimber kid:cool: always wanted one of those daewoos. After shooting my friends BM x39 like yours, I liked it so much....just finished my build 2 days ago. What mags you runnin? Are they reliable?.....just finished tinkering with a 6.8 ar mag to work with the x39 rounds. Need to head to the range to see if it will function.

Those are the 2nd generation C-Products mags and I haven't had any problems with them at all ... I used a Model 1 sales kit and the only problems I've had at all were light primer strikes, mostly on some old surplus ammo I had that has hard primers. I took about two thousands off the back of the bolt to allow the firing pin to strike a bit deeper and haven't had any problems with any ammo since. Some brass cased ammo I have (I think its Yugo surplus) shoots the best.

I originally made a stock for my IZ-132, to replace the cheap plastic one, with the intention of making several versions which hopefully would improve both aesthetically and ergonomically as I progressed and figured out what I wanted. However I like the feel of this first version so much I haven't bothered yet to make another and improve the looks.

It has a soldiers name carved in the wood. It was the soldier that was issued the original AK for that furniture.
