The circle with the square resting on top... how is it used?

It's an old design. Back in the early days, the square was a usefull aid in aiming, scopes weren't what they are today. Today, most use the mothball, since scopes are 36x or more. However, some still use the square when the mirage is really bad and you can't hardly see the mothball.

What the hell are you two talking about?

We are talking about a benchrest target that is used in competition. It has a typical bullseye, a series of rings, each bigger than the first. But then, there is a square with heavy lines, sitting on top the bullseye. There is a different one for 100, 200, 300yds.

in a Benchrest match, one has 12 minutes to fire 5 "record" shots. Those are the shots in the square. The smallest group, center to center, wins.

However, one may shoot all the shots one wishes in the rings, as sighters or wind readers or foulers or good luck or whatever.

Things are quite different now. Whether you shoot in IBS or NBRSA matches, you only have 7 minutes to shoot your 5 shot group. And the targets today have a lower bullseye (below the record target) for sighters. The only shots on the record target should be the 5 for your group, sighters are on thre different sighter target.

Unlimited matches where they shoot 10 shot groups are given 12 minutes.

I knew it was something like that. My memories of breakfast are starting to fade, let alone my scant knowledge of benchrest.

I really have to try it sometime... if I can remember where I put the range!
