Red Dot Mount Position?

I was wondering what the general consensus is on mounting red dots...

I have a YHM AR with a full (HUGE!) rail (44 positions). I have a Bushnell TRS-25 on UTG rail, which is co-witnesses with YHM BUIS.

I've tried it back on the upper at position 13, up on the barrel on position 18 and up further on position 30. From just looking at it in house and dry firing, I prefer it further up...doesn't impede my vision any.

Most people will say you don't know until you try it...I haven't had a chance to try it as you cannot find 5.56 anywhere in town (and I'm not camping out for ammo...) I did grab 5 boxes of crap, steel-cased Herters off Cabelas last week for 35 cents a round and that should be here this week, so I should be able to shoot this weekend.

So, where are other folks running their red dots?

As far forward on the upper receiver as you can go, without bridging the gap onto the handguard. The handguard isn't rigid enough to be a suitable place for optics unless it is specifically designed as such (monolithic uppers, VLTOR CAS-V, Larue OBR, etc.). A lot of people like their 1x optic farther back because they can "see more through the window/tube", but the body of the optic also obscures more of your view the closer it is to your eye.

The only reason my Aimpoint Comp M4s isn't all the way forward on my work rifle is because it wouldn't fit in the arms room rack if I put it that far forward. I had to sacrifice a couple of spaces.

Yup, you are putting it too far forward. Once you get past the upper receiver and onto the handguard you won't get a consistent zero because the handguard is not as rigid. If you like it forward then put it as far forward on the upper receiver as you can, no further.
