I have been eyeing these two rifles for the past 2 months now, and since I also am interested into getting into reloading, I think this would be a good place to start. I own other firearms also, but what I'm missing is a modern bolt action rifle that I can mount good modern optics onto for use as a general purpose hunting rifle.

I also noticed how slim the barrels appear on these rifles, will I damage the rifle any if I put it through its paces at the range via overheating? I like to shoot alot. I know overheating reduces accuracy some, but will I hurt the rifle?

I have minimal experience with a 783, only shot a buddies a couple times, wasnt overly impressed or anything....but I do love my Ruger American. So +1 for it is my two cents.

No question, get the Ruger. Smoother action, more out-of-the-box accuracy, IMHO better balance, and better looking too. Thinking about picking one up in .308 and cutting it to 16.1", should be a great compact truck gun, just a bit more punch than my 30-30s.

If the choices were an older used Remington 700 or American Rifle, my answer would be a bit different.

They make the compact now with a shorter barrel and stock. BTW I also vote for the american, very nice rifle with a great company behind it.

I've handled both. I preferred the Ruger.

I haven't had a chance to handle a 783 yet, but its predecessor, the 770 was the worst POS I've ever handled. The 783 can't help but be an improvement, but will it be a big enough improvement?

If you're looking for an good economy rifle, take a look at a Marlin X7. Lots of rifle for the money.

Love my Ruger American .243. Smooth action, shot well out of the box.
I haven't handled the Remington.
