Good and Bad News on Ammunition

I went to Gander Mountain today and lo and behold, there were boxes of Federal 40 Smith & Wesson ammunition just sitting there! That's the good news. The bad news is that the price was $29.95 for a box of 20! I'm not yet desperate enough to pay $1.50 per ROUND of handgun ammunition. It was interesting that no prices were on the boxes, nor on the shelf; I had to take a box to the gun counter (empty of customers at the time) to have the price scanned. When I heard the price I then knew why there were probably 30 boxes of this ammo just sitting there, something I had not seen in quite awhile. There was no other handgun ammo (the section is now listed as "Self Defense Ammunition") other than .17. Even the 45 Colt ammo I had seen there a short time ago was gone. I guess if there are shooters really in need, even this 40S&W at $1.50 a round will go.

what kind of ammo was it?

if it was a box of premium defense ammo....then its not uncommon to see them going for $1-1.50/ round normally....and they are usually sold in boxes of 20

if it was just regular plinking ammo.....then thats a bit steep.

The ammo I saw for $1.50 a round appeared to be just regular old Federal, 165 grain, jacketed hollow points.

The Gander Mountain I went to over the weekend had very limited ammo selection... No 9mm at all and no .308 or 5.56. The local mom and pops store I stopped at had every caliber, but was very expensive. $6.99 for a 50 round box of CCI Blazer .22lr's....etc. Independance FMJ 9mm was $29.99 per 50 round box. American Eagle 5.56 20 round boxes for $14.99 and the sad part is the same price for PMC X-Tac...

That's normal (pre-insanity) price at our Gander Mountain. Glad to see the supply improving, though.

Stores around here are still being sold out minutes after it hits shelves. People have paid off the truck drivers to call them just before they deliver shipments.

here's something i've been watching: one my LGS has had independence 5.56 for several weeks now on the shelf at $12.99 a box. Now the price is a bit high, but i'm happy that it has stayed on the shelf......this tells me people aren't just buying everything up anymore.
