S&W 686 why a 2.50 in and a 3.00 inch

I am just wondering why they would make two barrel lengths that are only half an inch different.

I think MSRP is the same and I believe the sights are the same.

I have a 686-3 in six inch and love it but it is a little big and heavy to carry around. I also have a 64 with I think a 2 inch barrel that is a joy to hold and shoot.

I just cannot imagine that there would be much difference between the two barrel lengths. Now if the 2.50 inch had a grove rear sight instead of adjustable, then I could see maybe easier to carry.

3 inch has the full length ejector rod for positive ejection of spent casings.

The 2.5" 686? I don't know why either. ;) :)

I believe the 2.5" barrel came first as the snubby version of the 686. Later, the Customs Service specified a 3" barrel for their detectives, so S&W made them special for the government.

There was a demand beyond the Customs Service for the 3" guns, and now we have both.

I myself am torn between the two. I want a 686+, I just can't decide between the 2.5" or the 3".

I carry a 2.5 686+ about half of the time, OWB. It's a GREAT carry gun.

They should just start making the Model 19 Combat Magnum again.

I love those snub combat magnums!

But then I am a fool for snub revolvers. Just ONE of my 2 1/2 Combat Magnums is in this photo.
