That's enough powder to turn your world upside down!
Yes, I just started whistling. Have fun!

May 10, 2013, 04:01 PM
That's 25# boxes? That is not that much powder. Am sharing this photo.

May 10, 2013, 04:57 PM
That's a good start. :D

Well that was a lot of work. Now time to light up the pipe and have a little sit down on these here crates.

Seriously, good stuff! I've got to get over there one of these years.

Well the front row is 40 boxes at 25 lbs. each, so that's 1000 lbs. and there looks like there are 6 rows, so that's 6000 lbs. or 3 tons. For my .54 flintlock including priming that would be 480,000 rounds.

I'd love to see the powder magazine at Friendship.

Oh, it is nice. I get my thrills by standing right next to it in a thunder storm
With lots of lightning strikes. Kinda gives a whole new meaning to "thunder boomers"

The magazine is up on a hill, well away from the office buildings. Due to a failed knee implant I have difficulty walking up hills, and quite a bit more coming back down. Combine that with a hot, humid day and the trip to the magazine is a significant challenge. Then wandering back down carrying 10 to 20 pounds of powder results in one poor, tired, gasping old man, I can tell you. Driving up to the magazine is prohibited. I'd suggest they establish a delivery system for us old infirmed geezers, but then I realize that would take in about half the people there and they wouldn't have time for anything else. Oh, well.

Seems like all they'd need would be a zip line and an intercom.

Naw, all they need is some energetic college kids and some rickshaws or pedicabs! :D

(Is energetic college kid an oxymoron these days?)

If you tell them it's a job? Yeah.

If you have college girls in swimsuits handing out cans of cheap beer at the top, the boys will peddle rickshaws for free.

You'll probably have a record turnout of dirty old men, too.

Sorry me and my wheel barrow are three + hours away, a bit too far to haul y'all, or y'all's powder around whenever you need to shoot.

May 12, 2013, 12:25 PM
Problem is they would just go up the hill and stay there, where the swimsuits are at :)

May 12, 2013, 05:52 PM
Yes, I would.

Wouldn't do to overdo it.

Wierdest case of "Thread Drift" to ever happen on the black powder forum...:scrutiny:

Speaking of swimsuits, were you there at Friendship Mykeal about 5 years
Ago when that nice lady pulled up on her motor home and parked it there on
The north side of the bridge by the creek, then put out a blanket and preceded to sun bathe nude? It took the about a hour to tell her she can't do that here.
The gentleman I am, I turned my head and kept going over the bridge to
Report her.

May 13, 2013, 04:02 PM
How many times did you have to cross the bridge before you managed to find the authorities?
May 13, 2013, 08:06 PM
That's not important, it's the intent that matters.:):)

It was probably a poor idea to advertise the presence of 3,000 pounds of black powder, and further identify its storage site on a hill.
There are domestic and international terrorists out there who would consider it a good target. Criminals could also use the explosion as a good distraction to rob banks, shoot responding police, whatever.
Think the Friendship event wouldn't be a good target? Think again. There are terrorism experts who feel that we're overdue for an attack against a relatively small target.
Why? So terrorists (domestic or foreign) can point to it with pride and say, "See? Even you small towns and cities are not safe from us!"
There are small cities upon which an attack would be quite disruptive to entire regions.
If you think, "It can't happen here," then remember those murdered in Oklahoma City by cowardly domestic terrorists.
Wherever there is a government building, Planned Parenthood office, logging company or large gathering of people, the threat of terrorism is very real.
An amiable, common-looking terrorist could easily learn where all that black powder is stored on a hill, just by hanging around gun shops, cafes and convenience stores.
We all need to be a whole lot more security conscious.

May 13, 2013, 10:49 PM
Oh please give me a break. At least come up with something valid. There will always be 'criminals'. Second the goal of 'terrorism' is to instill terror, fear and hesitation in YOU, which in this case it sounds like it is working quite well. Some of us grew up with the threat of atomic bombs from Russia being used and after a certain point of hiding under desk because of the 'drills' you just say enough is enough and get on with your life.

If you refuse or wont do something because of fear and insist on hiding it then that is not security at all. The security problem is still there but it is obscured. There are 2 things that divides 'criminals' from normal citizens, that would be motive and intent.

Any one with half of a brain could easily figure out from deductive reasoning about the powder storage and even it's location.

In closing I would have to point out that heaven forbid something happen with a tanker truck carrying diesel or gasoline be used for some criminal activity.

A lock is not to keep thieves out, a lock is to keep an honest person honest.
