Kahr K9: What's the Trick?

How are you supposed to get the slide pin out without three hands and tools? Is there some trick I'm missing? I'm used to my Glocks which of course are easy as pie to takedown. Do I have to utilize my wife or sons every time I want to take the slide off?
Help.

PS: I tried to do a search on this, as I am sure it has been discussed ad nausem, but had no luck.

Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?

Hold it by the slide in your left hand (assuming you're not left handed) with your hand wrapped over so that you can hold the tension necessary to keep the slide pulled back. This is the tricky part; I hold it with the muzzle pointed to my left, hand wrapped up under and around the gun.

Take some non-scratching something--a plastic screwdriver handle, or a broken pencil, or something, and reach around and tap the pin through, tapping towards you.

The procedure does look a bit spastic, but I've managed to do it without help every time. I have no idea how you're SUPPOSED to do it, and perhaps someone will share a procedure that's a little more elegant for us.

I need a tool, but only two hands.
Run slide back until slide notch lines up with slide stop pin.
Hold gun with left thumb through trigger guard from left side and hand wrapped over top of slide. Hold tight. Whack right end of slide stop pin with screwdriver handle. Let slide run forward to operating position and hold. Dryfire. Run slide off frame. Look for slide stop.

Ditto what ChristopherG says, except when you get the slide retracted so that the little tab on the slide lock lines up with the whole, press the nub sticking out of the other side of the frame down on a hard, flat, non-marring surface. Don't bang it, just press it down and it should pop out enougn to let you pull it out. Once you have done it a few times, it should get to where you can push it out with your right index finger. A little lube will help too.

I do it exactly the way Jim described. Just make sure it's unloaded before you start...

Thanks, gentlemen. I'll give these techniques a try.

Heck, I'm left handed, and I have to do these same acrobatics to disassemble a new Kahr. I don't "whack", I "push".

YMMV, but on all my Kahrs, the pin gets easier to remove after a while, and you can just pop it out with finger pressure.

It's one of the hardest pistols I've ever disassembled when new, but one of the easier when broken in a bit.

Ditto Onslaught.

It gets real easy to take down after it is broken in. In fact, I think it is the easiest pistol (MK9) I have to take down. Glock would be second.

A lady friend bought one after trying my K-9 a few years back and it came with an little orange plastic widget. It is used to place in chamber and hold slide open in exact position for pin to be tapped out. I think she ordered one from Kahr and gave to me but I'm not in a position to locate just now.

Before getting the hard plastic widget, I recall having to develop a convaluted technigue that involved placing muzzle at base of left thumb and hooking middle or index finger inside of trigger guard ... Pulled slide to position with right hand then squezzed slide like heck with left hand before it slipped and knocked pin out with screwdriver handle in right hand ... Seems like I also did it at least once on lady friend's gun before we discovered the purpose of orange widget ...

Pin did go in and out much easier after the first few times. I suspect Kahr may still sell the orange widgets ... Around $5 -
I think. Included with new guns? Got a widget in box ya now know what is? :D

The best way to do it is get a object that is just the right size to fit into the chamber opening and put it in there to hold the slide back, then you can tap the slide release with whatever tool you use (I used to use a Shrapie felt tip pen with the cap on). I found a plastic wedge somewhere that worked great for me.

It does get easier once you do it 20-30 times.

Here's the link for the Kahr take-down block (http://www.kahrshop.com/cgi-bin/itemdetail.asp?itmid=69). Kahr's website says that it "Inserts in chamber and aligns slide in exact position for easy dis-assembly. Only K9, K40, K40 Covert & E9".

I simply cut a piece of dowel rod to the proper length.

Works like a charm.

When I can find it. :)

used a dowel from my woodworking collection. Think it was 1/2" diameter, but not sure. In any event, it works just fine and aligns everything perfectly.

I can get my K9 apart fairly easy now that it is broken in, but it was tough in the beginning. I may get one of those take down blocks anyway. There are other guns that are easier to take down, but I won't part with my K9.
