Slix Nipples

I have been using the Slix nipples for a couple of months and just noticed something today as I was cleaning guns (1860s) after the last shoot.

I have always had a buildup of HARD fouling on the recoil shield on both sides of the hammer slot that generally required scraping to remove it.

Today the first gun had none. Noticed it and looked at the second gun and it also had no fouling nor was there an excessive amount of fouling on the hammer face.

No big thing, just an observation.

Anyone else see this?

I'm not familiar with SLIX nipples. Are the ignition holes larger ... or perhaps smaller than normal?

Similar to TRESOs but have a cross vent hole.

Thanks. So they're similar to those Uncle Mike's nipples with a hole in the side? I forget the name of them.

I've noticed it too. IIRC, in one of my road test reports, I mentioned it.

I think the better replacement nipples like slix and tresso's have smaller holes than the ones that come on guns. The originals work ok if you just shooting lighter loads but on some of my guns most of the caps are completely gone after i shoot with heavy loads.I dont know but i am guessing that those cross drilled holes are to expand the skirts so the caps are not stuck on after you fire like they may be with less blow back from the smaller fire hole. I get that hard build up on the recoil shield with stock nipples too.

The cross vent holes are advertised to improve ignition by providing more pathways for the spark to reach the powder. Whether they work or not is the question.

Well, let's think about that. The holes are in the cone, outside the chamber. For the 'spark' (more on the 'spark' later) to get to the powder through those holes, it would have to travel around the outside of the cylinder to an unsealed chamber somehow. That's the formula for a chain fire. Are the advertisers who make this claim actually meaning to imply that the cross vent holes promote chain fires?

The 'spark' - caps don't spark, they produce hot gas. It's the temperature of the gas that ignites the powder in the chamber, not a spark.

And, the real purpose of the cross vent holes is to provide pressure relief so the back pressure doesn't blow the spent caps off the nipples or try to cock the hammer when reduced power mainsprings are used.

Meh...not sure if any of that works or not. The caps seem to get obliterated randomly. Although, the ignition with T7 is absolutely better with Slix Shot and Treso's compared to OEM Ruger caps.

I'm sure a different combination of caps and propellant will give different results. I know that if I use RWS 1075's and full loads of T7 the caps really take a beating. However, if I use less than max real black and Remington caps, it's likely that the caps survival success will benefit using Slix Shot and Treso's.
