This bill has passed house 106-0 now goes to senate. This will allow some straight walled rifle calibers to be used in lower peninsula shotgun zone. Sure hopes it passes. Would be nice not to be restricted to shotgun and muzzleloader when hand guns can be used. Now same caliber in a rifle can hopefully be used.

I'd be pushing for no restrictions on rifle cartridges. 40 of the other 50 states have very little caliber restrictions. When we are happy to settle, the antis win.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought centerfire was Ok
in ZONE 3, as long as it was handgun.

Yes Inline Muzzleloaders are legal, some handguns are legal. With this law it will allow certain rifles. This will be nice for youngsters and women that are recoil sensitive, can get them away from slug guns and muzzleloaders. Line item 7 section D would be the new addition.

This will allow some straight walled rifle calibers to be used in lower peninsula shotgun zone.

A max case length of 1.80 inches will pretty much limit you to handgun caliber cartridges which effectively give you no advantage in distance over a muzzleloader or a slug gun. It would help with follow up shots I suppose.

It would be nice if they would let you use something like a .45-70. I've never understood the reasoning for the shotgun-only rules in some states.

So it allows .500S&W, but not .45-70? That makes no sense.

Who writes this stuff?

I wonder what cartridge they are trying to legislate around by choosing 1.800"?

By case length, do they mean the length of the case or the loaded cartridge? If they are going by the empty case length then a good way to stick it to the man would be a .450 Bushmaster with a 5 round magazine. Trim length on the .450 is 1.703. :D

Yes empty case length.

Even the .460 S&W has a case length of 1.80, the max allowed.

Looks like they are looking to specifically exclude the evil .444 Marlin, .45-70, and the super evil .375 Winchester.

That's just good government.
