I've a chance at getting a 30-30 Winchester 94 lever action rifle and was wondering about the feasibility of being able to use it for hunting elk.

It will work, but you've gotta get closer.......;)

Doable......but iffy.

If I were to do it: 170gr. slug, perfect placement, 100 yards max.

If you are any kind of a woodsman, its not a bad round for Elk. Back not so long ago, most time you found an elk hunter, you ran a good chance that he carried a thutty-thutty.

Understand it's limitations and go kill an elk with it.

Some limitations I'd recomend.

150yds is the extreme max
NO runninng shots
Broadside only
heavy bullet
cruise the dark timber
know how to follow a blood trail
At the shot don't shoot at another elk untill you've checked and checked good for blood chances are he won't drop to the shot. Follow the trail for at least 100 yards before you declare it a miss.

In other words be a responsible capable hunter like we should all be.
;)

I know a couple of ole codgers who still use their high power mighty .30's to hunt elk. They've never had a problem puttin elk steaks on the table.

I always like the .270 for Elk. But I still carry a 30-30,or .32 special when I'm all day in dark timber,or on a snowy day with low visability(open sights). Probably more Elk killed W/.30-30 than any other round untill 20 years or so ago. S.R.

100 yards max

150 grain bullet, faster and more accurate imho

not to be a wise guy but I am a 30-30 guru for whitetail inside of 100 yards.
