Anybody else have a soft spot for the 22LR?

I do.
Especially my CZ-452. The thing will literally put 5 shots in the same hole at 50 yds. And I can shoot it for 2 hours for about $5.
I like it.:D

As soon as the weather warms up and the wind dies down I'll have my 10/22T, 10/22M, and Marlin 17VS out for a nice day of rimfire shooting.

any 22lr rifle, or pistol for that matter, some range and some time. Lots of fun. Many a fine afternoon spent in informal competition when others of a like mind joined in. :)

I collect Remington 22s. A reasonably priced line to collect, and great fun to shoot...
Love the 22.......

I shoot .22 silhouette (well, I shoot AT them) and the Anschutz 1710 is the tool for the job. It is one of the Champion's Choice jobs with the green & tan Mc Millan stock. It is the rifle that I shoot the most (not that all this practice does me any good). I shoot Eley Club. Find the ammo that your gun likes and buy it by the case.

It seems these days I shoot my rimfires more than anything else I own!
goon - I hear you on the CZ 452! Bought a Special last year for $189 - tough to beat for accuracy at that price! I'll post some pics of the CZ 452 targets. Also have a 452 in 22 magnum - the very botttom target is a 100 yard group with the magnum.
The Anschutz is my dream rifle! I definitely want one!

....a weakness of mine, love collecting and shooting them. (2) S&W 41's, K-17 Masterpiece, (3) Model 52 Winchesters, (2) Volquartzen 10/22 Snipers, plus a half dozen others....

Let's see...
I still have the Marlin Golden 39-A Mountie my uncle gave me in 1963.
And the Single-Six Convertible I bought in 1972.
And who else do you know who has one Sako Finnfire Hunter and two Jewell triggers? (no, don't even ask)

I too love them. I have several rifles and several pistols; some are very accurate, some are very fun but not quite as accurate... But I love them all.

I also have an old 10/22 that my dad gave me many moons ago.
It was my "woods" gun when I was too young to use anything else, but smart enough to know that you need something in the sticks.
It has survived tens of thousands of rounds and God only knows how many trips, stumbles and falls with me, and is still kicking and screaming. My dad bought it to kill rats in the 1970's, and it was never cleaned until I took it apart one day in about 1995. I wanted to see how it worked, and I figured I would clean it while I was in there.
It could use a couple of new mags. The lips on the original are very badly worn.:D
I think a Marlin Papoose will be next.
Just something cool about a gun that will go in your backpack, and that I would have a reasonable chance of hitting something with.

For what it is, I think the humble 22LR is often under rated. OK .. not much ME but ........ cheap shooting?? can't beat it!
I have a circa 1920's Mauser Oberndorfe rifle ... it is a delight and will group beautifully ..... and also my old Marlin 60 is a great plinker. A small .22 semi pistol too gives much entertainment!
here is the Mauser . may have posted before but ... !! Excuse hideous bg color and poor res ..........

My favorite .22 is the Remington Model 241 SpeedMaster that my grandfather gave me. I grew shooting this rifle a lot. I know that I have put thousands and thousands of rounds through that rifle. I now own several .22s including a Ruger 10/22, Remington 597, and a Ruger Mark I, but the SpeedMaster has a special place in my heart. This will most likely be the first rifle that I give my son from my collection.

Buy that Papoose!!
I've had one for a couple of years. I also have several spare mags. I intended to just leave the Papoose behind the seats of my truck, but I changed my mind when I saw how much and how long water would stay in the concrete blocks of my garage. The Papoose weighs 3.25 pounds and comes in a soft case that floats! It's pretty accurate too. Fun!

Griz,I will never wish that you get pulled over, but if you did I would like to see the officers face when he figured out what he was looking at. Just after unloading most of the ammo in the picture, I was going to the range with 30k rounds of .22 in the back, plus some centerfire ammo and several handguns. Due to a few inches of fresh snow on the road, I had a four-wheel skid, seeing the white in the eyes of two on-coming drivers. After regaining control of the car, my first thought was "wow, that would've been some headline." :D
(Btw, most of the ammo isn't mine, it's our small university club that just couldn't turn down a 50,000+ discount, and since I was driving anyway I threw in a few rounds for myself as well... :) )

Hi there goon-
I'm the buyer of your BHP BTW, your guns will be shipped tomorrow.
I think you ought to consider customize/accurize your 10/22. It has great potention. My will do 1/2" at 50 yards all day long with the correct ammo(Wolf Match Target).
PM me and I can give you some details.

Count me in as a big fan of the .22lr. Right now the guns I'm taking to the range the most are my Ruger Single Six, my CZ 452, and my NEF Sportster (ok, the NEF is .17 HMR). You've got to love rimfire. I'm saving up for an Anschutz 1827 Fortner, with any luck I'll be able to buy it this year...

.22lr is the only thing I can afford to shoot a lot of .
No range session of mine is complete until either the Romanian Trainer or the Ruger MKII have rattled off a bunch of rounds!

Now & then I arrange a trip to the range with my son's friends. We shoot all kinds of stuff from Turk Mausers to 30 carbines but if it wasn't for .22's I couldn't afford to take 'em!
10/22, a couple of Mossbergs (one belonged to my Granddad), Nylon 66, 22/45 all have to be taken along.
Their favorite 'game' is balloon hunting. We fill 50 or so balloons with flour then scatter them out at various distances. Spot 'em & shoot 'em.

Love 'em.
Have a (stock) 10/22.
Have an old Model 60. I like that one better.
Have a $69 Romanian Model 1969 trainer. Like that one best of all.
No fancy ammmo for me. Remington Golden Bullets. $8.95/550 at Wal-Mart. Work best out of the budget ammo I've tried so far. Someday I'll try the fancy stuff.

My brother has one of those M-69 Romanians. It is a good little gun. Jams once in awhile if you work the bolt like a nancy, but it shoots very well for a $69 rifle.
Now if I could just get him to take his lazy but out and shoot some squirrels...
Dave R
February 5, 2003, 01:04 AM
goon, that's a common problem on the Romanians. It means he has a burr in the channel where the firing pin/extractor slides. The firing pin/extractor is supposed to be retracted when the bolt goes forward. If you watch the bolt face as you briskly slide the bolt back & forth, you'll see that its not always being retracted. If it sticks out when the bolt comes forward, it prevents the new round from feeding properly.
To fix:
1. Drive out the retaining pin with a small punch.
2. Remove the firing pin/extractor
3. File down the burr
4. Lube,
5. Replace the pin/extractor and the retaining pin, and she'll feed good as new. The burr is probably in the little indent in the channel where the rocker arm (technical term?) on the left side of the receiver grabs the firing pin/extractor.
Took me forever to diagnose that prolem, and 5 mins. to fix it. Then I discovered on-line forums, and found it was a well-known fix.

First time I shot my 10/22 was at an indoor range after shooting a bunch of .30-06 and .45-70 rounds. I kept pulling the trigger but I swear to God I thought it wasn't working because I couldn't hear or feel anything. Finally, I brought the target back and there were half-a-dozen little holes in the black! Only then did I realize what had happened. How can you not like a gun like that??
Bainx
February 5, 2003, 09:41 AM
I know it's kind of off topic but, if I chamber the first two rounds slowly, they will jam every time. My bolt-extractor-ejector is working well also. I found that if I chamber them very quickly, no jams ever.
Try it.
goon
February 5, 2003, 05:16 PM
My brother's jams on the ejection, not on feeding. It will occasionally even sling an empty out on the wrong side, meaning that the empty jumps over the left side of the reciever upon ejecting. But it does work when you work the bolt briskly.
Will the fix that you described fix that?
If it will, I'll talk him into letting me try and fix it.

Re the ''function'' deal, tho not quite on topic I know . I do find, both with my Marlin 60 and my semi pistol .. crud removal is very important after heavy useage .. messy round the .22, and crud seems to build on bolt face and also in and around the extractor claw recess .....
Of course, the mauser bolt doesn't have that prob!:p

My Mossberg M44 US trainer is quite an excellent bargain! $75 + $20 shipping to your door!
I shot a whole bunch of rimfire this weekend, and was surprised to find an old 10/22 parts gun shot as good or better than my vaunted M44 heavy barrel, Micro Click sites. I literally flipped up the rear site and reeled off 10 rounds. Talk about one ragged hole! You could cover 'em up with a nickel! I was impressed.
BTW, my best accuracy was with Winchester Target 40gr.

PS- I like the M-44's better than any of the others, for some odd reason. They weigh enough, but not too much, and remind me of shooting a Garand (without the sturm und drang). Plus, they're very accurate and have good sights. Hard to beat for $75, huh?

The .22 L.R. is the very first rifle most boys will use in their life and when they become very, very old as time marches on, the .22 l.R. will be the last weapon they will ever fire before going west forever. The .22, like ones life, will have come full circle.
