Over-sized bead sights?

Gents:

I was thinking about the bead on my Mossy 500. Seems to serve my needs for SD. But how about an OVER-SIZED BEAD! Anyone have any experience with the aforementioned or recommendations? Thanks!

IMO: A SD shotgun is a point & shoot weapon.

If you are looking at the bead, you are not looking at the threat, where you should be looking.

I have seen high-level clay target shooters break 25 straight at trap or skeet with a missing bead and never know it was gone till somebody else told them.

^What RC said.

...and too large a bead might obscure the target.

RC, sound advice as usual, but not ALL targets are threats - some of those clay targets can be downright docile - but you still need to point and shoot....... ;) :D

I agree, but what I'm thinking is that in addition to up-close issues, I want to be prepared to make a 50 to 100 yard slug shot. That, I think, would require something a bit more than a standard bead. I don't want to put an expensive sight on a $250 shotgun. Even a quality ghost ring sight is running about $150 (see XS sights). Do you have any other recommendations?

Thanks!

Well, an over-size bead would cover up the whole target at 100 yards so you couldn't see it.

A smaller bead would work better I think.

Makes total sense. I didn't think of that, as I am a numbskull.

Any other recommendations that may serve my purpose?

Just learn how to use the standard bead/beads that come on the gun. I had no problem last deer season putting a brenneke KO slug between the front shoulders of a small buck at 50 yards. I used nothing more than the two beads that came on the gun.

+1

Spend your money on more slug practice ammo & getting to the range.
And shooting slugs at long range with what you have.

It will pay off in spades over anything you can do to the sights, short of a rifled barrel, sabot slugs, and a scope or rifle sights.

I wanted a larger bead myself and didn't see a whole lot of options out there. A buddy of mine is getting an XS Big Dot installed on his as we speak to replace a bead. Hopefully I will get to see it in a few weeks.

I just installed the XS big dot sight this weekend on a remingtion 870. It is much nicer than a standard bead sight. The white is very easy to pick up and the center is a Trijicon night sight. Perfect addition for home defense especially in low light conditions. For installation you have to epoxy it over the existing bead which worked better than I thought it would and turned out great. Also, it doesn't come with epoxy you have to get that yourself. Here is a pic I found on google to show what they look like.

I too have heard good things about the xs big dot for sd. It was a little pricey for me so I picked up a hi-viz fiber optic clip on. This thing clips on TIGHT. It's not a whole lot bigger, but it shows up very brightly. In no light obviously it doesn't work. I've got a sure fire bolted to mine for that situation.

Here's the gunblast dude's take on them

I recently saw some fiber optic sites at Walmart. These hiviz ones are much bigger and brighter.
Here's a poor quality photo; it really doesn't do the sight justice... But it gives you a little idea.
