Seems we can't make the PDHSC get-together, they're doing preliminary testing for incoming frosh for the new semester at UNC-P that weekend and The Good Doctor has to be on campus. Such is life where employment is concerned...

Keep planning the THR SSI Picnic And Fun Shoot and maybe we can make that one...

KMKeller-

So let's look at two plans. The first get together is for August 11th at PDHSC at 10:00 am. Everyone is invited and all are welcome. The second is for a get together at SSI. Any dates in mind y'all?

Um, when it gets cooler ? I'm been to SSI when it was 98ºF and it wasn't that much fun.

I should be able to make the PDHSC meet on the 11th.

Yeah, SSI at 95-98 degrees = no fun. Blip normally drags me along on his outings (or is it the other way around) and lots of fun is to be had. I'm sure I can make Tilley's place on the 11th now that I have my weekends back.

This will be a double-post of sorts for those who are in the meetup group, but all NC residents should take note of this:

NC House Bill 310

You all might want to write your state representative about this. The
bill, which would prevent seizure of firearms during time of emergency,
and make it legal to transport them during the same, has been stuck in
committee for almost six months.

With the peak of hurricane season rapidly approaching, it's time our reps
get on the ball:

We picked up a dual tone CZ-75 (because I'm addicted to CZ's) and a Taurus 605 (357 lightweight small frame revolver) for the wife to summer carry.

Went to SSI on the way home.. CZ was flawless (I've come to expect this) and the Taurus was kind of flaky...:(

The Taurus sometimes took some jiggling to get the cylinder to swing back in (empty or not) and other times the cylinder would rotate freely after swinging it back in. Who would have thought the "problem" gun would be the expensive revolver!

I found a dealer that was selling Unique powder for $14 but that was about the only deal I saw. There were few Colts there and many were way overpriced. I had hoped to find me another but the search continues.
I did spent Sunday morning at SSI shooting the Colt New Agent I am testing. I got there about 0930 and all but 1 pistol range was full. I did not make it to the rifle range this time.

Hi rantingredneck. My name is Ed and I am a THR member and a member of the Buckhorn Gun Club. I am new to shooting and have had my Buckmark pistol only about a month, but found the Buckhorn range through a friend and joined up. I would like to add a .357 revolver to my shooting routine sometime soon and am sifting out all the information from the web that I can. That's how I found THR and it has become one of my favorite sites to visit. I can't add much experience to this forum at this point, but THR is full of information for me. Hope to meet you out there sometime.

Well, I live about 15 miles east of Albemarle. There is a range called Efird's range. It's outdoors. Nice range and he runs a tight ship. He has a CMP there too. apparently, the people of Albemarle will keep guns in their WAL-MART! He also has ranges there that the LEO's can use and has a nice place to hold all kinds of things there. Just my 2 cents worth!;)

What exactly is SSI?

stevemis
November 21, 2007, 12:04 AM
What exactly is SSI?

It's a members-only private range in the Louisburg area. It is short for "Shooting Sports, Inc.".

Membership is always sold out (limited to a couple of hundred) and you'd need to get on a waiting list if you want to join. If an existing member does not renew, they'll give someone on the waiting list an opportunity to join. Young Guns in Apex handles the membership.

The facility has several pistol ranges, a 200 yard rifle range (with benches at 100 yards as well) and a clays area with spring-loaded target launchers. The range is primitive... no lighting, no buildings but has a very nice and well maintained outhouse. There's a covered meeting place and the 100 yard portion of the rifle range is covered as well.

NFA items are unrestricted. Make sure you have the appropriate paperwork with you.

If you're looking for a "no BS" place to shoot, SSI is it.

I was provided with a copy of the database today by the Wake County Sheriff's Office, free of charge.

It concerns me that the names of, for example, abused wives with CCWs will be posted for their ex-husbands to track them down.

Doesn't really bug me that MY name could be released. Criminals aren't going to go around checking everyone's name against the list before they rob a store. If I'm there, those criminals will eat hydrashoks regardless of whether the Charlotte Observer knows who I am or not.

stevemis
November 21, 2007, 11:31 PM

Bear - mine took about 100 days in Orange County. Our gun permit rules here are draconian, and they evade the 90-day law by telling you that the permit was approved within 90 days but "hasn't been printed in raleigh yet."

Roxy Wilkins will call you and leave a message when your permit has arrived, then you have to go pick it up at the Sheriff's office.

Hey,

Good to hear from you. I usually shoot on Saturday or Sunday morning. But if you're interested, I could take you as a visitor to the DPRC so you could check it out. I need to get over there anyway so that I don't feel like I'm wasting my membership. I probably shouldn't have renewed at Buckhorn, but I like its pistol ranges more and, if I do get into it someday, its setup for skeet is better. DPRC, though, has a 300-yard range and is more social, the kind of place (if I had any) I'd want to bring my kids to shoot.

rantingredneck

I need to place a relatively small order with Powder Valley (which I think has the best prices), but was wondering if someone else nearby - either in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, or Mebane or would like to split HazMat/shipping with me?

Conqueror
January 29, 2008, 11:12 PM
I might be up for that, let me check their website. When are you placing the order?

And yeah, DPRC went to 144 this year. I worked a couple times at the gun show booth though, so my dues were about 30% less.

Bear2000
January 30, 2008, 11:08 AM
I'd like to place the order sometime soon. I'm starting to reload .308 for a rifle I have on law-a-way at Mace (I want to make the ammunition before I pick it up). All I really need are some CCI BR Primers, but I'll probably pick up some Varget and maybe a pound of something else. But Powder Valley's prices are really quite good - the best I've found anyway. Certainly better than gun shows or a local store. It is, though, a wash after Hazmat and shipping (about $30 per order), but split two ways and you do pretty well. AND you get what you want, because reloading supplies are pretty scarce at Mace and other shops.

You know, DRPC really ought to have a user-friendly member forum where we could post these things. I'm sure we could find plenty of people who'd like to buy in bulk. Then we could split up 8 lb jugs of powder and 5000 cases of primers, etc.

This message is for all members of the Durham Pistol & Rifle Club.

At the last club meeting I proposed that the club create an online forum for club members only. The goal would be to increase communication among members who rarely see each other at the range and don't/can't get to monthly meetings. It will never be a THR or FiringLine, but hopefully will serve the needs of the clubs 1000 members.

I will be administering the forum. I hope you'll join.

PLEASE SEND ME A PRIVATE MESSAGE IF YOU ARE A CLUB MEMBER AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN.

Again, it's for club members only at the present time.
