Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill... NC in it's entirety

OK, it's time for all the NC THR members to sound off about a shoot. Propose dates and locations and assemble the masses for funnin' and gunnin'.

Oxford, NC (The Range I believe) has already been offered up by Taipei Personality. Frank has plenty of room up there and as long as we're not infringing on a competition, I don't forsee a problem. Any other suggestions?

Times and dates are wide open at current.

I moved to NC from WI last fall (for grad school at Duke), and I'm still looking for a place to shoot and people to shoot with.

What sorts of dates were you thinking of? next month? next 3 months?
School keep me very busy until May 1, and I'm away, getting married in WI, in July.

March 19, 2004, 07:33 PM
We'll probably be aiming for something in April, but there's nothing stopping us from planning something after that as well.

March 22, 2004, 03:32 PM

March 23, 2004, 06:03 AM
I'd love to go, as well as I have a couple of friends attending NCSU that have showed interest when I mentioned it to them.

March 23, 2004, 05:06 PM
I'm there!

April 6, 2004, 04:44 PM
Does anyone here actually have access to any land upon which we could shoot? IMHO that would be preferable to a formal firing range setting, and much more conducive to friendships being formed.

I propose a date of June 6th as the first "NC Good 'ole boys get-together."

Not sure.

Well, Frank Glover runs IDPA matches every first and second Sunday every month, and a 3 gun match every third. So shooting on a Sat or the last Sunday of the month is the way to go if shooting at The Range. Which by the way a really nice set up, and I hear that they did some improvements a while back and made it even nicer. I also heard that Frank shut down The Range from public use and have to ask first to use it on the weekdays, but this is only through the grape vine word. It's been a lone time since I was last there, but it is a great place to hold a shoot. Then there's The Durham Pistol and Rifle Club. Have not shot out there yet but if anyone has a membership there please sound off. Then there is the PHA range over by Salisbury that's real nice but crowded on weekends I think. Might have to ask 1911Tuner about that one, he's in winston-salem and would know what kind of situation that would be. Yes, the best way would be shooting out on some land but I have no contacts right now that have any near by. I know of one out in Boone (if i ever can get ahold of him), but that's a hike for some shooting, for those that live in the triangle. Eveything else is pay for range time, ($15-$20) like Davi's, Range-1, PDHSC, and Jim's.:barf:

Any other ideas, because The Range is looking pretty good for a Saturday of shooting.

April 16, 2004, 11:47 AM
OK folks the response has been dismal to say the least. Come on NC shooters. SOUND OFF LIKE YOU GOT A PAIR!

April 17, 2004, 01:09 AM
This weekend and next is out, any time after that, BRING IT ON! :D

Hey, gimme a break, I just got here to THR after tracking down Shotgun moderator Dave McC to his digital digs (I lost him when GunSpot went away, while I was 'away'). Just now getting out of the scattergun box a bit and looking around. Any of you Triangle folks members at SSI, maybe?

(down fuertobraggo way)

April 22, 2004, 07:16 PM
Plan a time, I'll be there. My vote goes to the Range.

April 23, 2004, 11:32 AM
I'm game! Let me know when/where and if I can bring my new M1A :D

April 24, 2004, 11:22 AM
"kbr80" is a member if SSI I believe. I going to try to join this month.

Fred Fuller
April 26, 2004, 06:44 PM
Thanks, duckfoot. SSI has a great facility, I've visited there. Hope you do join, I think you'd like it. Don't know how their rules would address a gathering like this though.

If anything in central- eastern NC begins to come together, don't keep it a secret. I'd like to be there...

May 13, 2004, 08:51 PM
Way up here in Surry County, But I'll drive to Durham if need be. Might even bring my sister, who needs to see how nice gun people can be. I'll even bring some down-home cooking if ya'll are hungry.

Very impressed with the inteligence and well reasoned postings I've seen here so far. That's why I joined this group. Have recomended same to several friends, one of which runs a local interest group for survival skills on Yahoo:

Should anyone be so inclined.

Just let me know when and where, and what to bring.

Billy Sparks
May 14, 2004, 09:31 AM
Ramius, what part of Surry are you in? I am just down the road in Winston.

May 14, 2004, 01:33 PM
Billy Sparks, I live in Mt. Airy, just below the NC/Va state line here in Surry. Come to Winston just about every Sat night in summer to races at Bowman Gray Stadium. Used to shoot at Grandview Arms range, but closer and more convient for me to use Gun Country (formerly Pop's Gun Shop) which has a decent indoor range. Prefer outdoor shooting weather permitting, we have a nice new place near Elkin called Windy Hill Trading Post, with 2 open gun ranges, 50, 100 yd. targets and a brand new Skeet shooting tower. Nice people running the show, too. Recomend either place to you or anyone else visiting Surry County. Should you get up this way, would be happy to treat you to an afternoon shoot.

May 14, 2004, 04:42 PM
I'm in Fayetteville and am interested.

Billy Sparks
May 15, 2004, 09:44 AM
Ramius, I still shoot at Grandview, matter of fact getting ready to head out there right now.

I have a couple of friends that live in the Mt. Airy area, but I am more familar with the Elkin/State Road area of Surry. Have family up there. I am wanting to check out Windy Hill if I can ever get a weekend to ride up there.

I guess you heard about Dave of Dave's Guns? If not read page B2 of Friday's Winston-Salem Journal.

May 19, 2004, 07:59 PM
Citadel99- Where do you shoot in Fayetteville???

May 19, 2004, 08:19 PM

Shoot pistols out at Guns Plus on Bragg Blvd--friendly staff and the cleanest, best lit, best ventilated indoor range I've ever been to. However, most my shooting is out at my landlords property--75 acres.

May 19, 2004, 09:57 PM

If you've not yet been to Windy Hill, you'll be really pleasantly surprised, IMHO.

Yes, heard about Dave. Very sad, I still do not understand what happened. The local papers are short on facts and very biased. Rest in Peace, Dave.

Friend of mine MIGHT (work permitting) be up this way Friday for some fun and games, if he makes it we'll be hitting Windy Hill around 430 or so. Look for a short fat man with a Confederate Cotton Co. hat on.

Shoot straight, shoot safe.

May 20, 2004, 11:37 AM
I go to the Wake County range. I might be interested in going if it was relatively local to Raleigh.

May 20, 2004, 12:51 PM
I'm trying to get one together out at SSI south of Louisburg, but got to join and then ask the board if I can hold some sort of group shoot there as my guests. Failing that, if Taipei Personality offered up The Range in oxford then that would do just as well. Both are about an hour from Raleigh and I would plan on making a day of it with a cookout and everything. Also while I'm not a formal instructor I have taught close quarters Draw and Engage with pistol, shooting while moving with pistol and rifle, alternate shooting positions with rifle, and draw from concealment for those who are interested and have at least a solid grasp of basic firearms handling, and marksmanship (not for first time shooters)

May 24, 2004, 12:37 AM
I am slam covered up right now, and prolly will be well into July...If ya have something going around that time, then count me in...

I live about 20 minutes from Greensboro, so RDU wouldnt be a big deal... Somebody lemme know...:D

Billy Sparks
May 24, 2004, 07:23 AM
It being budget time I am covered up also. I will try to make an event but it depends on my schedule. I have already decided if I survive to July 1 I will be happy.

May 24, 2004, 08:15 AM
I am interested in a NC gathering/shoot. I have "on-call" periods at my job, so I couldn't absolutely guarantee whether or not I could even come to the gathering; but it sounds like a great idea!

May 24, 2004, 09:20 AM
Let's get something in the works! I wanna shoot my new 870!

May 24, 2004, 11:25 AM
I've been trying to contact the owner of The Range in Oxford to see if it's possible to have a shoot there. No responses after a week or two, SO.

Does anyone have any ideas about an outdoor range where we can all get together to have some fun, bring the families and let the kids shoot too? Anybody have 20 acres and a hill to shoot against? I'm open for just about any weekend I'm not actively competing and would love to get together with a bunch of TFL/THR folks. If we can find a venue, then I'll be more than happy to handle the logistics.

May 25, 2004, 04:57 PM
Well just was up in Oxford at the range Sat. to run the classifier, and have to say that they are gearing up for the IDPA Carolina Cup on June 12 so I'd say the that is the reason why they haven't responded. Well I'm still working on my deal with SSI but gotta go to the monthly board meeting for a intro.............

We shall see.

Guess I'll keep my eyes on this thread for further develpments.

By next year, if all goes well(getting out of the city into the country), maybe we can have one of these at my place!

July 14, 2004, 04:32 AM
WhiteKnight- so you're an NCSU student, too, I take it? I'm a ME senior, NROTC midshipman.

Anyway, WRT a NC shoot sometime, I'd be interested, although honestly finding time could be hard for me. In about a week I'm going out of town for my Navy summer cruise, get back just in time to be bored for a few days before fall semester starts up. Unfortunately, I don't have access to land suitable for shooting, except maybe skeet shooting- and that's behind my parent's house, a site I'm hesitant to volunteer since I don't live there any more. I do have a friend who's a member at Durham Pistol & Rifle, who I shoot with ocassionally- if there's interest, I'll see if he can get some info about a group shoot for us. DPRC is a pretty nice place- a 15 yard pistol pit, 50/100yd general purpose range w/ concrete benches, 25/50 pistol range w/ wood benches, 300yd rifle range w/ concrete. On the other hand, they have fairly strict rules about guests being accompanied by members. I'm not a member anywhere myself, only because I'm relatively new to the shooting sports.

So, I'd love to meet some of you guys on here sometime- I won't be in NC much longer, since I'll graduate next spring and get commissioned and shipped off to God knows where (pray for Pensacola)... If there's serious interest in DPRC, I'll look into it.

Edit: Also, there's another issue I have... I keep accumulating ammunition at a rate greater than I expend it. I'd welcome any chance to fix that. :D

July 14, 2004, 06:46 AM
Go ahead and check at DPRC and see if that can be worked out. The Range in Oxford is pretty slam full of competitions these days and the owner never got back to me. I typically shoot at a local PD Range, but there a snowballs chance in heck of a group shoot there. Somewhere, there's got to be an area where a few of us can get together to shoot. At this point, we may have to move to PDHSC in South Raleigh and rent the range for an evening.

If anyone is interested in that, PDHSC has an indoor range and I can arrange to rent the entire range for a couple of hours and get the rental guns thrown in for free, we just need to pay for the range fees and the ammo unless we bring our own. I'm not sure how many people we would need, but I can find out. The only downside is that PDHSC is a pistol range (20 yards), but you can shoot rimfire rifle. They also have an interactive range that we may be able to get on as well. This would mean however, that the shoot would have to be during the evening hours after probably 5pm.

Anybody interested in that?

That would be a perfect location time-wise for me, although the formal range setting sort of detracts from the atmosphere I was hoping to experience. I frequent PDHSC, and know that Taipei Personality goes there also.

Would any of you be interested in going to the Sharon Harris game lands? I've shot there with before with a friend off of RFC and we had a great time. We simply parked and found a likely spot, then tossed dozens of clays with a hand thrower and bulk pack 12 gauge ammo.

July 15, 2004, 08:29 AM
I'd be game, but I'm not sure if that's legal...:uhoh:

July 17, 2004, 11:09 PM
Update: Unfortunately, I haven't been able yet to get in touch with my buddy at DPRC. I'd be fine with PDHSC- the chance to shoot some rentals would be welcome to me, I always like to broaden my horizons! I've also already got a range safety card at PDSHC (I bought my P94 there).

I'm flying out to San Diego Monday morning for my cruise, and I'll be back around 13AUG. I should have occasional Net access, so I'll keep up with how things are going here when I can,. I'll also keep trying to get up with my buddy- I think DPRC would be a little more enjoyable than PDHSC, since there are fewer restrictions on what we can shoot.

Another possibility is the Wake County Firearms Education & Training Center (http://www.wakegov.com/county/lawenforcement/fetc/default.htm). There's more flexibility as to what we can shoot, with ranges out to 100 yards. However, you have to go through a 2-hour "orientation" before shooting there, and it's $15/$25 for the range card (resident/non-resident). Your first hour of range time is free, but thereafter it's $10/$15 per hour. I honestly don't know that it would be worth it to everyone who's not a Wake resident. The range is only open for limited hours, also- I suppose there's the possibility of working out some kind of deal...

August 12, 2004, 12:22 PM
Just a reminder - the Dixie Gun & Knife Classic will be at the fairgrounds this weekend.

August 12, 2004, 12:42 PM
Dang! How'd I miss this one?

I reckon it's too late now....but how'bout next time? Can I come
play next time? Can I? Huh?:D

And I ain't in Winston...I'm in beautiful downtown Rural Hall, NC,
just about a mile from the Stokes County line.

Chitty-Chitty, Bang-Bang!

August 12, 2004, 12:55 PM
Tuner, this never came about. Lack of venue keeps hosing us.

Ah! Okay...You and Fed still on for the 22nd? Assuming that
the range ain't under 5 feet of water by then...

August 12, 2004, 01:12 PM
That's the plan. We're supposed to be shooting a match in Davidson at the Iredell FOP range this Saturday. I'm taking hip waders and a canoe...

August 12, 2004, 01:15 PM
Good deal. I'll write up instructions on where and when to hook up.
Will you be comin' in through Winston on I-40 or comin' down I-85?
Either way is good.

August 12, 2004, 05:15 PM
Coming down I-40.

August 12, 2004, 07:37 PM
With the upcoming dove season, how would a group dove shoot sound?

Anyone have access to land?

Heck, I'd even buy the land provider a couple hundred rounds of ammo.

August 22, 2004, 07:40 PM
Well, Fed168, my son and I got back from the first semi-almost-official NC get together with 1911Tuner about 4 hours ago. It was a fun time, and a good time was had by all.

Thanks 'Tuner for your hospitality. Thanks also for your wit and insight. The company was great, the shooting was great, and the weather couldn't have been better. The range was in peak condition and enough lead was thrown downrange to elicit a most satisfying nap upon our return. Except for Fed168... he napped on the return drive.

I believe that this is the first time my son actually said "I'm done" as he had shot enough. The little man had a great time.

Today was a GOOD day.

August 22, 2004, 09:20 PM
Thanks again Tuner- learned some great stuff and had a great time, except for almost blowing my gun up.

Fred Fuller

Y'all WOULD do this on a weekend I had to work...

August 25, 2004, 12:02 PM
Does anyone know of an outdoor range (that doesn't charge ungodly amounts of money) around Wake county? Anything within an 45min-1hour of Raleigh? Got a bunch of silver tip 7.62x54 that I can't take to the indoor range I go to...

August 25, 2004, 12:43 PM
Fletcher, give the following sites a shot. Both are pretty decent places.

NC Shooter
August 25, 2004, 01:27 PM
Try Trigger Time (http://www.trigger-time.com/) in Carthage and The Range in Oxford (http://users.gloryroad.net/~idpa/).

Both within an hour of where you live.

While you are at it, once you get your pistol try the IDPA matches at both these places.

August 25, 2004, 03:33 PM
Keller: Those were the first two I saw, and unfortunately I can't afford to go to either :p

NC Shooter: Does Trigger Time have a range where someone can just show up, pay, and shoot? Also, does 'The Range' have the same? The website for 'The Range' wasn't very user-friendly or informative...

Fletcher, I think on both, the best thing to do would be to Email them and ask.

September 12, 2004, 10:26 PM
You may want to try RANGE-1 out in Lillington. Pistol range and 100yd rifle plus a side bay for training, etc...

Very nice people out there.

$15 for all day

Directions From Raleigh

Come down 401 South or 55 East towards Fuquay-Varina. Proceed through Fuquay-Varina and stay on 401 South to Lillington. When you see a large Chevrolet on the right and the MacDonalds on the left, you will need to turn RIGHT at that light to stay on 401/210. Proceed THROUGH Lillington on 401/210. At the end of town there is a Burger King. Bear RIGHT at the Burger King and get on 210 South. Proceed about 3 miles and look for "Harmony Baptist Church" on the RIGHT. About 0.3 miles after the church, you will see a tobacco shed on the right at LOOP ROAD. Turn RIGHT onto LOOP ROAD, proceed 1 mile. The range is on your LEFT. There is a sign for the range.

September 13, 2004, 11:25 AM
Thanks - It looks like a good place. I'll let the other two people in my 'group' know and head out there sometime soon.

September 13, 2004, 01:57 PM
I just went out to Range-1 on Saturday, it was my second time there, the first was over two years ago, but I got sick of shooting indoors and wanted to take my Makarov and my CZ to an outdoor place. From Raleigh it takes about a little less than an hour to get there, but it's a very pleasant drive, through downtown Fuquay-Varina and Lillington and lots of rural land along 55 and 401.

They have a pretty nice setup, a friendly range. The only thing is that they use wooden target frames, and if you hit the frame with a shot they charge you 1$ extra for each hole in the frame. I didn't know that, so I stuck one of the "exploding" yellow targets in the top right corner of my target so I'd have another target to shoot at once the main target was full of holes, but I stuck it too close to the edge and clipped the frame with four shots. Well next time I'll know to keep everything in the center.

Is anyone still interested in getting a group shoot together in the Triangle Area? I shoot at a variety of places, I've been a PDHSC a bit lately since Davi's new range isn't open yet. I usually go to Davi's because it's close to work so I'll stop in and squeeze off a box of ammo after work or sometimes on lunch.

But for a pretty casual atmosphere (not casual about safety of course, but casual socially) I'd recommend Range-1 for the location. It's a decent outdoor facility in a good setting, the range fee is $15 for unlimited time, but perhaps I could negotiate a group deal if we have enough people interested. It's a bit of a drive but not a difficult one, we could even meet somewhere in the Triangle and drive to the range together. Being relatively new to shooting myself, I'd love to get together and meet some other enthusiasts from the Triangle area.

September 13, 2004, 02:23 PM
I think I'm gonna see if my roommate wants to head over to PDHSC this afternoon and burn some ammo to commemorate the end of the AWB. Seems like as good a reason as any. So if anyone else wants to head over there, you might see me. I'll be wearing my olive "Peace Through Superior Firepower" T-shirt.

And although I've recently sold my .22, leaving me with the BPS and the P94, I'd still love to have a get-together sometime. Unfortunately, I'm no longer in touch at all with my friend at DPRC. :(

September 13, 2004, 02:29 PM
I was just over at PDHSC picking up a new gunbelt. I'll be heading back over there on Friday, probably from noon to 2:30-3 O'clockish if anyone wants to meet up then.

September 13, 2004, 04:54 PM
OK. Tentative plan is to have a group of people I know to go to Range-1 on the 18th. Will keep posted.

September 13, 2004, 05:16 PM
What time?

Fletcher, do you want to meet up somewhere?

September 13, 2004, 05:58 PM
Yeah, I think if we talk to Pete over at Range-1 we could definately organize a group get together. I'll probably be going out there this Sunday, if not I'll be at PDHSC.

PS Has anyone seen any Glock hicaps in the Triangle area yet? I need to pick up a few for my G23...

September 13, 2004, 09:24 PM
Not sure yet. Trying to see how many of my friends are going first. Just ordered some ammo from ammoman (7.62x39) - hopefully it can get here by then. If not, I'll still have enough anyways :p After I find out who on my end is going and such, I'll let you all know.

Hoping Ivan won't be dumping rain on us :(

Also, that is $15 per day, right? And do they require a range orientation of any sort? I know PDHSC and Wake County Range both do, but they're both indoor.

September 14, 2004, 06:31 PM
Yep 15 for the day. No range orientation.

September 14, 2004, 07:06 PM
Well, as long as it's not raining, I intend on leaving here (Raleigh area) no later than 10AM.

September 14, 2004, 08:27 PM
Damn. I've gotta work a football game for my NROTC unit this Saturday. :cuss:

We'll do it sometime...

September 14, 2004, 08:48 PM
Perhaps we can arrange a larger get-together around Thanksgiving or sometime a couple months away so we all can keep that day available. It would be great to meet everyone.

September 14, 2004, 08:58 PM
Fletcher - do you want to meet up somewhere in Raleigh to save on gas?

September 14, 2004, 09:05 PM
Sounds good. However, Thanksgiving weekend won't work for me- I'll be in Chattanooga being the best man at my brother's wedding.

Bring on those bridesmaids! :D

September 14, 2004, 09:23 PM
Well, what time in November or so would be good for everyone?

September 14, 2004, 09:27 PM
WhiteKnight - PM sent

Don't get too excited yet :(

September 14, 2004, 09:58 PM
Dang it. I hadn't seen the weather. Oh well, if it's raining I'll probably go to PDHSC on Sunday. Need to see if they have any high caps anyway.:D

September 14, 2004, 10:35 PM
If it rains, I'll be going to the Wake County Range instead.

September 15, 2004, 08:45 PM
If it clears up, will anyone who is going happen to own any sort of rifle with a Jewell trigger that you'd be willing to bring?

September 16, 2004, 04:39 PM
EDIT: Path redone by NHC for Ivan - coming more this way, rain on Saturday again...

Forecast is now good for Saturday - hopefully it stays that way.

I don't think anyone else going has one of those, WhiteKnight...

September 16, 2004, 08:38 PM
Looks like I'll be sleeping in Saturday morning. :(

September 16, 2004, 08:52 PM
How about sometime in October? I am gonna be tied up for about a week.

September 16, 2004, 10:24 PM
You boys just let me know where and when, and I'll manage to be there somehow...

September 16, 2004, 11:10 PM
Same here. At the moment, I'm moving and all my ammo is packed into a box (a DAMN heavy box, I might add) at my new place, while I'm still at the old place. I can get it together if need be, though. As God is my witness, we'll get this together sometime!

September 16, 2004, 11:21 PM
Hrm... Well, looks like this weekend is rained out, so I'll be going to the Wake County range Saturday around 2 if anyone else cares to go.

As for a Range-1 meetup, October 16 (Saturday)? What time would be good?

September 17, 2004, 11:46 PM
As early in the morning as possible.

September 18, 2004, 02:37 PM
How's 10 or 11?

September 18, 2004, 02:50 PM
9 or 10 sounds good to me. I work most Saturdays from 4-close, so I would like to be able to get out to the range and have some time to shoot before I have to leave.

September 18, 2004, 04:37 PM
OK, tentative time is now:

October 16th, 10AM

September 18, 2004, 09:02 PM
I should definitely be able to make that day and time. The weekend prior (fall break for NCSU), I'm going down to Brunswick County with my roommate for my first deer hunt, so hopefully I can bring my BPS to the shoot and be able to say that it's drawn blood.

September 19, 2004, 09:41 AM
I'll have at least two other people coming, one friend from high school (should be bringing 3-4 rifles), and one of my roommates (with a mosin).

September 19, 2004, 11:12 AM
Hmmm. Maybe I could invite my roommate, too- he's got quite the arsenal, though it's nearly all hunting-oriented.

September 19, 2004, 11:17 AM
I may bring a person or two also.

September 21, 2004, 06:56 PM
EDIT: I'll keep a running list of attendees here:

Fed168 (Maybe)

September 21, 2004, 07:05 PM
I'm in. Probably bring a friend or two...

September 21, 2004, 08:12 PM
Fed168 and myself plan on attending as well.

September 22, 2004, 10:21 AM
Count me in, and looking forward to it.

September 23, 2004, 01:50 PM
Fed168 may have to back out due to work schedule fluctuations.

September 23, 2004, 02:01 PM
It only took 20 minutes for this triple tap to post...

September 26, 2004, 05:33 PM
October 16? Where? I have just noticed this forum and have just now seen this thread.

If it aint too far, Me and a buddy will try to make it.

September 26, 2004, 08:41 PM
Range 1 Public Shooting and Gun, Bunnlevel, NC.

Here's their website with directions. (http://www.range-1.com/)

September 28, 2004, 08:05 PM

If I'm not mistaken, you just live a couple of miles away from me here in North Raleigh. Do you want me to swing by and pick you up for the 16th?

September 28, 2004, 09:41 PM
Well hey, that's great of you to offer. I don't see why not. I have cleared that whole day so I can stay at the range as long as we want to. Then next time I'll drive. If you PM me and let me know where you live, I'll PM you with directions. Thanks again.

October 11, 2004, 03:46 PM
5 days left :D

October 11, 2004, 04:18 PM
Hehe, somebody else is looking forward to Saturday as much as I am.

October 11, 2004, 11:33 PM
Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to make it. A friend of mine is getting married that day- I knew it was soon, but apparently he sent my invitation to an old address or something, 'cause I just found out a couple of days ago.

October 14, 2004, 07:25 PM
Unfortunately (for me also), I may not be at the range this Saturday. I've got an IDPA class until 11PM, so I will have been on the go from 7-11 Friday... I'll see how tired I am Saturday morning. In the event I don't make it, I will definitely be there November 20th, just to give some advance notice. :(

October 15, 2004, 08:55 AM
We've also got a cancellation from KMKeller. Who does that leave?

I'll be there regardless. I'll be wearing a black Makarov T-shirt so look for me.

October 16, 2004, 10:37 PM
Well I had fun at least. I was at Range 1 today from about 11 AM until about 3 PM. Went through about 350 rds. Didn't meet anyone else from THR.

October 17, 2004, 09:56 AM
My apologies for not being able to make it. I will be at the range Saturday, November 20th. A friend and I will be hitting up the gun show early (so he can get something for his Enfield), and heading straight over.

October 17, 2004, 10:22 AM
Well I had fun at least. I was at Range 1 today from about 11 AM until about 3 PM. Went through about 350 rds. Didn't meet anyone else from THR.

Well that stinks. Sorry to hear that. Perhaps we should try to get something together closer to home?

I would've attended, but my wife spent a few days last week in the emergency room and it left me behind at the office and at home, so I had a lot of catch-up to do. Not to mention touchy clients in Tokyo and London that had projects coming due. Sorry I couldn't make it.

I'm still willing to host an "after work hours" shoot at PDHSC if anyone is interested.

October 17, 2004, 10:37 AM
I'd be interested.

October 17, 2004, 04:38 PM
Also interested - I could do that as long as it's after 630 or so.

October 18, 2004, 12:25 PM

I assume you mean the Nov. 20-21 Dixie show in Raleigh. I plan on hitting that show on Saturday morning as well. I would definitely be up for hitting the range afterwards. Depending on thewhat I find and the $$$ situation I may be picking up a gun at that show, probably either another CZ-52 or a Star BM.

Are you planning on going to Range 1 that day?

October 18, 2004, 06:17 PM
Are you planning on going to Range 1 that day?

Friend or two and I will be heading over to Range 1 right after we go to the show, which will probably be first thing in the morning.

October 18, 2004, 06:39 PM
Fantastic, we should arrange to meet up at the show. I love the Raleigh show, but a couple hours or so is plenty of time to see everything, so we should have plenty of time for shooting.

October 19, 2004, 11:05 AM
They open at 9AM... I think it would be best to be there no later than 10 if we're shooting afterwards.

EDIT: I think I'll add a few US-made parts to my SKS before the 20th too...

November 8, 2004, 11:50 AM
Just a reminder:

November 20th
9AM - Gun show at State Fairgrounds
Immediately after we're headed to Range 1.

November 8, 2004, 12:16 PM
Can't wait. If all goes well I'll be leaving the gunshow with a nickel-plated Makarov, Classic Arms is supposed to be finishing it for me. I'll do a bit of inspection and lubing when we get to the range and hopefully get to try it out right away.

November 8, 2004, 06:45 PM
i'll be at the show as well. :) Need to get some parts for my Enfield No4 MkII and my Bulgy Mak...
Range-1 would be a great way to wrap it up!

YEEESSSS!!!!!! I just found this thread!!!! I might be at that gun show and would love to go to the range afterwards. I MIGHT can. I have been to that range a few times and it is pretty cool. Hope I can make it!!!! :D :D :D

BTW when do u guys leave ths show??? I leave at different times so when???

November 10, 2004, 01:47 PM
^ Well, we seem to be meeting at the show at 9, but I have no idea when we're going to leave it...

November 10, 2004, 07:35 PM
Since you guys are talking about Range 1 in Bunnlevel, they've got a 3-gun Match scheduled for this Saturday. I spoke to them today and registration is 1000 and Safety Brief @ 1100 followed by the Match. More info is available on the website, www.Range-1.com, the dates are not current but 3-gun Match on 2nd Saturdays and Pistol Match on 4th Sundays.

November 13, 2004, 12:30 AM
My 922(r) parts came in today - installed them a couple hours ago :D

A muzzle brake won't put it over the 10 parts, so one is one the way (to arrive Monday). More toys for the range trip :)

November 13, 2004, 01:05 AM
So does that mean the range is closed to public shooting that day? I know they have a couple different ranges at Range 1, including a tactical pistol range.
Either way, we're gonna meet up at the show at 9. We might as well meet right by the entrance. I'll be the skinny white guy with short hair wearing the black Makarov T-Shirt.

November 13, 2004, 05:38 PM
OH NOOOOO!!!! :( Someone tell me that the range WILL be open to the public that day!!!!! Cuz I can make it now!!! I sure hope it is.

Ok I just checked thier website and I believe it said the match wuz today not next saturday. :o

November 16, 2004, 10:47 PM
Excellent weather for Saturday - Partly cloudy with a high of 70 :D

November 17, 2004, 12:07 PM
Well I had a disappointing conversation with Classic Arms today, it seems the nickel Mak is not going to happen, I didn't get specifics, other than, it "just didn't work out." They will have a couple of nickel-plated CZ-52's on hand on Saturday, though.

So I'm pretty bummed. On the upside, I already had the $$$ earmarked for the Mak, so I will be gun-hunting at the show, we'll just have to see what I find.
I'll see you guys at 9am on Saturday.

November 19, 2004, 12:01 AM
Seeing the weather, I'll probably be at the gun show @9AM wearing a gray NC State shirt (red lettering) and jeans. Will have at least one other person with me.

Just to check: Who all is going this time?

November 19, 2004, 12:21 AM
Cool. I'll probably be in line a bit before 9.

PS. To everyone coming don't forget to go here (http://dixiegunandknifeshow.tripod.com/coupon.htm) to print a coupon for $1 off admission.

Since my deal for the nickel-plated Makarov fell through, I may or may not be buying a new gun depending on what I find. I'll be scouring the show hunting for one of the following:
Star BM
Zastava Md. 70
FEG PP Clones (PA-63, BR-61, etc.)

November 20, 2004, 08:16 AM
Well, we're off to the show ~8:45. Don't forget your raingear, kids.

Forecast changed to:

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with the chance of sprinkles or light rain, mainly during the morning to midday hours. Highs in the low to mid 70s.

November 20, 2004, 05:06 PM
Well, I made it to the gunshow this morning. I saw cls12vg30 standing at the door w/ someone(who?) Yall might not of saw me but I walked by at about 9:10 w/ a bright blue and white raiders T-shirt on. Maybe you remember. Anywayz the show was pretty good. :) Couldn't make it to the range. sorry. :( I was at the show till after 3:00. :D

November 20, 2004, 05:15 PM
Met cls12vg30 at the range, got to shoot my Mosin for the first time - very impressed. Hopefully more people can make it next time around.

November 21, 2004, 12:09 AM
9, I was standing with KMKeller. Were you waiting in line when you saw us? Sorry I missed meeting you. It was good to meet all the guys at the range.
It was a good show. As I mentioned, my deal for the plated Makarov didn't work out, so I was there with the $$$ I had budgeted for that purchase. Didn't find any FEG Walther clones, and all the Star BM's were pretty worn. I ended up sort of throwing caution to the wind and picking up a beautiful stainless Llama Micromax .380. If you don't know, this is a compact 1911-based pistol made in Spain, it looks just like the Colt Compact Government .380 and seems to be mechanically identical, but the Llama cost a lot less. I've never bought a gun without doing extensive research before. Tried it out at the range, it is quite accurate, and has a nice crisp trigger pull, but I did have a couple failure-to-feeds with hollowpoints, but the action seemed to get better after 100 rounds, as I expected. Gave it a good cleaning when I got home.
It breaks down just like a 1911, so it's a bit more complicated than my Makarov. But the Llama is also quite a bit thinner and lighter, and the finish is beautiful. We'll see how it turns out. Having lived in Spain as a kid, I always wanted one of the Spanish pistols.

November 22, 2004, 06:22 AM
cls12vg30 - Good to see you again, and glad you like your purchase. For those who were there, I was the one wearing the black TFL Alumni shirt and hanging out with the bald dude (Fed168). I ran into a bunch gents that I shoot with at the NCPCPL, but cls12vg30 was the only THR'r that I bumped into.

November 22, 2004, 10:48 AM
^ Hrm. If you were at the gun show for a while, I may have actually seen you - I saw someone with a TFL Alumni shirt head out the exit (I was on the bench by the door, my friend was wrapping his shotgun back up). Perhaps that was you?

November 22, 2004, 02:48 PM
Black short sleeved polo, silvering hair, blue jeans and glasses.

November 29, 2004, 09:49 AM
I am looking on how to contact and drive to Windy Hill in Elkin. I am mostly a clay target shooter and am always looking for a new place to shoot. I live in Asheboro and shoot at Ohpir Skeet Field almost exclusively.

Thank you.

Reminder: Gun show coming up next weekend in Raleigh.

January 9, 2005, 02:03 AM
Yeah a bunch of guys from the ncgun mailing list are meeting at 9:30 Saturday morning in the restaurant in the Jim Graham building. One guy is going to make signs to put on the table(s) so we all go to the same place.

January 9, 2005, 09:41 PM
I should be there early with a friend or two or three.

January 10, 2005, 01:12 PM
Shooting Sports Inc membership dues notices were just received. Those of you who wanted to join should be prepared to get on the waiting list next month.

January 23, 2005, 10:17 PM
I've never been to the Greensboro gun show. Tell me about the show this coming weekend. How does it compare in size to Raleigh? Is it the same vendors as Raleigh? How is the ratio tactical to deer hunting gear?

February 14, 2005, 03:06 PM
Has anyone ever been to the C&E show in Winston-Salem? Is it decent? This Saturday I'm either going there or the S&D show in Jacksonville. Winston-Salem is closer and I'm betting larger.

February 15, 2005, 07:15 AM
Christopher, Winston is nowhere near as big as Charlottte or Greensboro, and I find it varies a lot. Sometimes I leave satisified and other times I tell myself I won't go back. And they hit you up for parking as well. Anyway, I'll give it a try this saturday as I haven't been for about a year.

Hope its better than the one at Charlotte Merchandise Mart couple weeks ago; dismal show, short on dealers, and short on customers. Couple dealers pulled out on Sat night.

Billy Sparks
February 15, 2005, 08:14 AM
I'll second what ulflyer said about the WS show. Sometimes it is great other times it is less than pleasing. I will be there around 10ish.

February 15, 2005, 08:25 AM
Me too. I'll be the ole geezer, pot belly, tan cap with Moto Guzzi logo. If you see me, say hello.

Ted, Lexington NC area.

March 11, 2005, 03:53 PM
I'm going to be looking to do an FFL transfer to Raleigh in the next couple weeks, I thought someone had posted a good list of the local FFL's, but I can't find it anywhere.

So does anyone know who's got the cheapest FFL transfers in the area? The major stores all seem to be in the $30 range (PDHSC, Davi's, Young Guns, Gunworks). Anyone got a better deal than that?

March 13, 2005, 08:00 PM
I just stumbled across this thread...I do all my xfers at "east Raleigh jewelry & loan" ; a pawnshop on smithfield rd. in Knightdale. He charges me $10 per. Don't know if that's the homeboy discount or his regular price, I buy stuff there regularly. the owner, James, is pretty friendly. give them a call.

March 13, 2005, 08:38 PM
Scott Allison, at Big Sky Guns n Ammo, in Apex, $15 a xfer.

March 13, 2005, 11:30 PM
Hey ya'll, I go to NCSU and I'm on the rifle team there. Don't have a range pass for Holly Springs yet, but I hope to get one if they'll let me.

March 14, 2005, 02:19 PM
Hey ya'll, I go to NCSU and I'm on the rifle team there. Don't have a range pass for Holly Springs yet, but I hope to get one if they'll let me.

Welcome- I go to NCSU as well. ME major, NROTC midshipman. Got my range pass for PDHSC, probably going to get my membership there soon. I'll also be taking the CCW class in the near future.

March 17, 2005, 02:43 PM
Nice, looks like that makes three of us at NCSU :D

If I have time, I'll be going to the Holly Springs range this weekend or next. I'm also signed up to take the April 16-17 CCW class at PDHSC.

Also, anyone else planning on going to the May 7-8 gun show at the fairgrounds? I plan on picking up a Mak or other small pistol there for when I won't be able to carry my revolver.

March 18, 2005, 07:30 AM
I keep meaning to go to an orientation for the FETC, but I haven't seemed to have made it yet. I'm going to spring for the $200 membership at PDHSC when I get some $$$ in a few days- but I'd like to have the Holly Springs option for sighting in my rifle, and maybe the 10/22 I'm thinking about getting.

March 21, 2005, 10:17 AM
I'll be there. I'll either be shopping for an SKS or another CZ52 or both.

March 25, 2005, 02:54 AM
Oh, as for the May gun show, I'd like to go, but I plan on being down at Cherry Point for the airshow at least Friday and Saturday, and maybe Sunday, too. I like to have one day to take photos of static displays, and another to enjoy the performances- but I may have trouble getting the whole weekend off. If I'm home, I'll probably dip in there Sunday to look for interesting things.

March 28, 2005, 05:21 PM
Anyone interested in organizing another range-trip right after the gun show?

March 29, 2005, 08:03 AM
Sure, what range do you have in mind?

March 29, 2005, 09:29 PM
I was thinking Range-one as it can accomodate rifles and handguns. Perhaps Wake County range if enough people have their range cards for it.

March 29, 2005, 09:45 PM
Range 1 gets my vote, my favorite outdoor range, I was just there on Saturday. A bit of a drive from Raleigh, but a pleasant one this time of year.

April 11, 2005, 06:17 PM
Change of plans- the airshow that weekend is out, going down to Wilmington this weekend to see the Angels instead. Turns out the 8th is Mother's Day, and getting that weekend off is pretty farfetched. On the other hand, I'll very likely swing into the show Saturday morning, and would be interested in the shoot afterwards. Range1 sounds good- I don't have a FETC card at the moment, though I plan on getting one soon. In any case, I have a rifle that will need to be sighted in in the near future anyway, one my Sightron arrives. My roommate might want to come out as well. I'll keep you all posted.

April 27, 2005, 01:17 PM
Bump - gun show is a little over a week away.

May 6, 2005, 12:02 PM
Last bump for roll call (Gun Show @ 9AM, Range-1 Afterwards)

May 6, 2005, 01:17 PM
I'll be there, where are we meeting?

May 6, 2005, 02:21 PM
I plan on being in line no later than 9, and should have anywhere from 1-6 people with me - meet at those benches in the 'lobby' as you go in?

The Freeholder
May 6, 2005, 02:52 PM
I'll be there Saturday. I'll wearing a black t-shirt with what looks like an eye chart on it. Say hello if you see me.

May 19, 2005, 04:57 PM
I would have thought about going had I stopped by this forum earlier. :banghead:

MisANTHrope, the Cherry Point show was pretty good. Even had a pretty convincing F-35 mockup and a mockup of the STOVL engine assembly (cool), plenty of WW2 warbirds, and a bunch of Marine ground combat hardware. Lots of parents taking photos of kids posing behind APC-mounted .50's. :D

August 9, 2005, 04:42 PM
Well, there's a gun show coming up this weekend. I'll most likely be there first thing Sunday morning.

April 3, 2007, 02:37 PM

Dixie Gun & Knife Classic will be in Raleigh on May 5-6.

April 5, 2007, 06:51 PM
I'll be at the show on the 5-6th, and another NCSU student checking in.

May 4, 2007, 08:20 AM
Bump for show this weekend. Hopefully I'll walk out the door with a new rifle :)

May 5, 2007, 05:22 PM
I just got back with my new rifle, a Remington 1903A3 in great shape, with the two groove barrel. Also, there's a guy selling 1500 rounds of Chinese steel-core 7.62x39 for $250.

May 5, 2007, 07:15 PM
I really wanted to go to the show this weekend but had an overdue light bill to pay this week. I guess its better to have lights then a new gun or is better to have a new gun and no lights, Hell, with summer comin' up I guess I could stand to take a few cold showers:D Anyway, I will be at the one in Augast.

1500 rounds of Chinese steel-core 7.62x39 for $250.

Good find.

Went in for a Saiga .308, came out with this:

Just ordered some sights for it - hopefully it will shoot well :p

May 7, 2007, 11:20 AM
I'm glad I noticed this thread!

I'm a 35yr old ex-pat Brit who's new to shooting (no guns in the UK any more really) and live in Raliegh, NC. I just bought my first SKS this weekend at the Dixie Gun show and before that I just had a little .22 for about a year and a half. I'm mainly focused on milsurps for now, drawn in by the pricing and the lure of battle proven weapons.

I live about two blocks from Davi's, but as I'm thinking of getting in black powder pistols I'll be looking to join an outdoor range some time soon.

Anyone else in my neck of the woods looking to give a noob some pointers, maybe get together and hit the range?

May 7, 2007, 11:40 AM
I'd be honored! I've PM'd my contact info.

May 7, 2007, 11:51 AM
Great! I'll warn you now though, I've not been at all impressed with my own efforts so far.....

I get off work around 1500, I'll give you a call around then.

May 7, 2007, 01:13 PM
Not a problem! If you get my voicemail, it's because I'm in a meeting. I'll return the call as soon as humanly possible if I don't answer it immediately.

June 1, 2007, 10:29 PM
I live in Fayetteville and I am looking for somebody to go to the range with. Is there anybody within a reasonable drive?

June 1, 2007, 11:09 PM
My good friend, freshly moved from Buffalo, and I will be heading out to Range 1 probably sometime in the next couple weekends. That's a pretty easy drive from Fayetteville.

I need to test out my newly-acquired Norinco SKS, as well as exercise a few of my handguns. We might put a few slugs through my friend's shotgun as well.

What I plan on bringing to the range that day:
Norinco SKS 7.62 x 39
CZ-52 7.62 x 25
Possibly one of my Makarov's or the Spanish Llama .380, we'll see.

As for my friend
Mossberg 500
Beretta M9
And possibly either his S&W .40 or his FEG PA-63 in 9x18 Makarov.

I hate to bust you guy's bubble but Range one is closing June 15th. I thought about heading down there myself until someone over at TFL informed me of it's closing. Are their any ranges that allow rifles down there in Fayetville?.

June 2, 2007, 06:23 AM
Anyone making it to the Fayetteville show this weekend? ( http://www.cegunshows.com/Show_Schedule.htm ) I may get up there Sunday afternoon if all goes well, there are a couple of parts I need to find for a current project.

June 2, 2007, 09:59 AM
I don't know of any ranges in Fayetteville that allow rifles. I have a new to me AR I want to take out.

June 6, 2007, 02:15 AM
Kirk, I'm done moving and raring to go (just gotta get my Mosin some ammo from a buddy of mine).

When's a good range date for you?

June 8, 2007, 09:31 PM
I spoke with the owner of Range 1 yesterday and he told me they were closing and selling off the inventory.
They are having a big sale this weekend.
I am outside Raleigh myself.

June 8, 2007, 11:31 PM
I'm acquainted with some folks out here in Chapel Hill/Durham and would enjoy getting together with some others. Anyone interested?

June 9, 2007, 01:20 AM
Yeah WhiteKnight, that sounds like it could be fun.

June 9, 2007, 02:38 AM
I would be interested myself. What would be a good location?

June 18, 2007, 09:32 PM
I don't know of any ranges in Fayetteville that allow rifles. They have been open since Sept. '05. They have 100 yd. rifle, covered 25 yd pistol with cable target holders and a second pistol bay with plates, poppers and a mover. I was just out there Sunday with my AR and M1 carbine.

June 19, 2007, 02:15 PM
I would also be interested.

June 25, 2007, 09:39 PM
Hello everyone... quick question...

Are there any rimfire clubs in the area? Thanks very much.

June 25, 2007, 10:16 PM
I don't have any range experience, except for qualifying for a CCW permit. I shoot every couple of weeks on a kinperson's place.

I live in Lenoir county, so Dudley is doable for me. I would be shooting a 9mm Witness mostly. That is, if I'm not intruding?

June 26, 2007, 11:16 AM
^^ I'm not aware of any.

June 27, 2007, 12:42 PM
I'm down in Charlotte. I shoot fairly often at Shooter's Express in Belmont,(.45 & AR-15). If I can get some free time I can probably meet up with y'all up in your neck of the woods.

June 27, 2007, 10:44 PM

The only gun club I know of around here is the Sir Walter Gun Club (http://www.sirwaltergunclub.com/). They may have in-club matches for rimfire, but membership is in excess of $500 last time I checked.

June 28, 2007, 01:13 AM

At that price, I guess I'll just keep shooting on family land down East. Thanks anyway, though.

June 28, 2007, 03:28 AM
How much is a membership and can you just show up and shoot as a guest?$150 for a year, lower for LEO and Military (includes free CCW class, or you can transfer it to someone else if you don't need it). Don't remember what the monthy was or if they even had a daily. Call Ken and ask.

I'm out of State right now until the 11th.

June 29, 2007, 06:46 AM
I'm planning on heading to PDHSC this weekend, probably Saturday early afternoon with my family. Care to join us? For that matter, would anyone like to join us?

Also, I've started a meetup group for the triangle region. Please see the link in my signature for details.

June 29, 2007, 09:15 AM
I might be interested. I was planning on going to the Wake county range on Saturday to plink with the AR, but this might justify a change of plans.

June 29, 2007, 09:55 AM
I'd love to, but pretty much everyone else at my second job just quit and my wife (who would usually work the shifts with me) is going to be in Atlantic City this weekend :(

So between main job, second job and trying to find some sleep time, I'm not really going to be available, sorry. Oh, and she's taking the car with her.

I'm joining your hookup group though, as I'd love to have been able to go this weekend..... For one thing, someone has to make fun of my Bubba'ed SKS.... After I mangled the stock by accident fitting my Tech-Sights, I just went hog wild :)

July 2, 2007, 07:36 AM
We missed ya! Fletcher was at the Wake County Range and I had my family at PDHSC. We spent a couple of hours and hundreds of rounds, mostly 9mm as my wife has a new gun she wanted to get comfortable with.

Met another shooter there, a young fellow of Asian descent who was very good with his firearms. I didn't get the chance to ask his name, so if he's a THR member, hopefully he'll speak up and let me know who he is.

Also, for those who may be interested, I've started a meetup group for the Triangle area. Please see the link in my signature.

July 2, 2007, 07:48 AM
Well, I joined the meetup group, so hopefully when my work schedule stops being so full, I can mosey along and meet some folks!

July 2, 2007, 09:32 AM
Glad to have you. I'm close enough I may be able to swing by and give you a ride. PM me with info if you're interested.

July 2, 2007, 10:10 AM
Thanks! I was just figuring out if I can get over to that end of town on that night :) Moving out to the boonies has its downsides.....

July 2, 2007, 10:15 AM
The trip to Wake FETC was pretty good. It was my first time firing an AR-15, and I loved it. Desperately needs to be sighted in, but that's not a problem.

Saw a man there with a 1903 broomhandle Mauser - very nice looking gun.

Also, I'll be at PDHSC sometime this week with my dad (keeping in "shape" for our IPDA class this Friday). If anyone has the opportunity to take the IDPA/defensive pistol class there with David, I highly recommend doing so. This is my second time around.

Can't wait for the 11th :)

July 2, 2007, 02:03 PM

Let me know when you and your dad are going to be at PDHSC and I'll make arrangements to be there.

I didn't know that PDHSC was holding IDPA classes. Is the Dave, David McDonald?

P.S. I just found out that Dave, is Dave Bramble. I though it may be David McDonald as he's also very well known in IDPA circles, but shoots in ESP Master. For a minute, I thought my buddy was teaching now.

July 2, 2007, 02:54 PM
Will do - he's supposed to be letting me know his work schedule soon.

And yes, David Bramble is the instructor. I took one of his two-day classes a couple years back, and decided to do it again this year and bring dad/fiance/different gun with me. Finished the first two days, this week is a third "follow-up" class for more content.

The classes are essentially made as demand appears, so if 6-8 people want to take it, and he's available, it could happen.

July 2, 2007, 03:29 PM
How much for the class do you know. PDHSC is about 10min from me. I used to shoot the Action Pistol matches at Range 1 but they are closing. I plan on getting into IPSC at Sir Walter when the heat breaks. A few refresher classes would do me good.

July 2, 2007, 03:46 PM
The 2-day class was $129, this particular follow-up is $79. I'm not sure when the next one will be.

July 2, 2007, 03:53 PM
If you put your questions in an email and send that email to PDHSC@PDHSCdotcom with "IDPA" in the subject, they will forward your email to the IDPA instructor.

I may just have to take this class myself. Never done IDPA, but I've often thought about it.

Hey Hunter, join us on the 11th at the meetup.

July 2, 2007, 05:52 PM
Kirk I can stop by for a visit on the 11th. What time will yall be there?

July 4, 2007, 02:01 AM
We'll be there at 6:30 sharp.

July 4, 2007, 03:24 AM
1830 at PDHSC?

July 4, 2007, 08:42 AM
Nope. The meetup is at Oh'Mulligans in Morrisville. Check the link in the bottom of my signature and you'll find location, directions, etc.

July 5, 2007, 01:56 PM
KMKeller - Turns out my dad just wants to wait until Friday (for the class) to shoot again. Perhaps we could hit up the range another time. Organizing some group shoots would be fun, but I've got no clue of anywhere within a reasonable distance that can accomodate a group outdoors.

July 18, 2007, 12:33 PM
Bump for ~3 weeks until gun show & next meetup (on the same weekend).

July 19, 2007, 11:43 AM
You folks want to make it a twofer? Hit the range and then head over to the gunshow?

July 19, 2007, 02:24 PM
Sounds like fun, I should probably be available. Put me down as a tentative maybe :)

July 19, 2007, 04:17 PM
I should be able to make it to that one.

July 20, 2007, 03:33 PM
I've followed THR for a year or so and just stumbled upon this thread today.
I work in Raleigh and live on the outskirts.

I'm a member at a non-descript outdoor range near Louisburg.
Pistols/Clays/100-200yd Rifle.

Once the humidity leaves town, I'd like to plan a group event.

July 20, 2007, 03:47 PM
Same here for me blipmode, I live on the very farthest northern edge of Raleigh by Wake Forest.... I'm curious where this Louisburg range is, by the time you get out here you're not entirely too far away from L'burg at all....

July 20, 2007, 03:50 PM
Excellent! Now we're getting a little momentum! If you guys want, we can run the get together through the meetup group, or if you're not interested in joining, we can just try to organize it through THR. If you want to join, please see the link in my signature.

Your choice.

July 20, 2007, 04:30 PM
NCBrit. I can only say it's about 20 minutes North of Rolesville :D
Actually, I'm taking my Dad in Law up there this weekend after he buys his first semi-auto pistol. I'll be in touch later.

KMK. Thanks for the invite. I tend to stray from the internet stuff but I'd love to get a group of us out there. I have about 7 other locals that would be there if schedules allow.

July 20, 2007, 04:46 PM
Excellent! I'll make you the first stealth member...

July 23, 2007, 09:45 PM
My best friend laying waste to a plastic thing with a 12GA @ 12yrds.

It was dancing.
Come on :D

July 23, 2007, 11:15 PM
That looks like SSI

July 24, 2007, 07:12 AM
OT question:

Does anyone have a muzzle facing/squaring tool they'd be prepared to lend/rent to me? Ideally, you'd have a 7.62 pilot already, but if it's something akin to the Brownells model with swappable pilot rods I'm prepared to pick up my own.

If you do, can you drop me en email/PM!

July 24, 2007, 02:21 PM
Hunter@m1911, yes it is SSI.
It was a perfect day to take my Dad-in-Law shooting.

I wonder how many SSI folks are here on THR ?

July 24, 2007, 05:35 PM
I shoot there about every other Sunday. Usually the 100 yard line then pistol range.
I started as my dad's guest when I was about 16 or so and been there every since.

July 24, 2007, 07:35 PM
Amazing, how 250 people can re-form within a Forum. Such as it is.
I usually visit on Saturdays before noon, or Sundays with my better half.

I'm looking forward to getting something together, after the humidity.

July 24, 2007, 08:14 PM
I'm an SSI folk, too. We should all get together for some weekend plinking and some lunch afterwards!

July 24, 2007, 09:04 PM
Someone say when.

July 24, 2007, 09:28 PM
Yes that is the 200 yard line. Yall let me know when and I would love to go.

Fred Fuller
July 25, 2007, 10:47 AM
I wonder how many SSI folks are here on THR ?

It's my wife's home range- all those pine trees that were planted around the range and on the berms are her babies. Just ask her 8^).

Unfortunately we don't get there very often, it's a pretty hefty drive from down here in lower, slower SE NC. But if y'all work up a get-together, we'll try to be there. It would be nice to see some more THR folk in their natural environment.

July 25, 2007, 11:17 AM
How do I get to be an SSI folk?

July 25, 2007, 01:07 PM
It would be nice to see some more THR folk in their natural environment.

If you think I'm going to sit on a couch in my underwear with an Xbox controller in my hand when there's shooting afoot, you're in for disappointment :)

July 25, 2007, 04:49 PM
Randy Young of Young Gun's in Apex is the man to call about membership to SSI. I believe there is a waiting list because there is a cap on the number of members.
Give him a call and see though.
Would yall like to plan a Saturday or Sunday meet at SSI coming up soon? Members can bring a guest so even non members could come. We could meet at Hardees in Rolesville for breakfast or somewhere better.
Count me in for 1. Anyone else?

July 25, 2007, 07:30 PM
Count me in, depending on the date.
My wife may show up too.

July 26, 2007, 11:31 AM
Dependent on me passing my driving test in the next couple of weeks (I know, I know!) I should be there!

July 26, 2007, 10:29 PM
If there's a member than will take me as their guest, I'm up for a meet.

July 26, 2007, 11:06 PM
Spoke to Randy at Young Guns... no new members until February 2008...:( Somebody want a friend?

Hunter - count me in for an SSI shoot if you can find someone to adopt me. I'd love to meet everyone and see the venue.

So let's look at two plans. The first get together is for August 11th at PDHSC at 10:00 am. Everyone is invited and all are welcome. The second is for a get together at SSI. Any dates in mind y'all?

July 27, 2007, 11:15 AM
Doh, didn't think of the guests issue at SSI..... do we have enough current members there to buddy up with us outcasts?

July 27, 2007, 03:14 PM
SSI needs to initiate an "Adopt a Gun Nut" program...

July 27, 2007, 03:35 PM
All of the non-SSI folk can go with only 1 member. There's an honor system where each non-member pays $5 for the day... and the $ are mailed to SSI and used for upkeep/insurance.

Not a bad deal, and yes I need some new friends anyway :D

July 27, 2007, 03:50 PM
Does that need to be in singles, so we can tuck it in the relavent clothing item of the SSI member?

July 27, 2007, 04:33 PM
EGADS !!! You just painted a disturbing picture

July 27, 2007, 04:36 PM
AAGH! My minds eye is now blind...

Fred Fuller
July 27, 2007, 04:56 PM
I was thinking about joining you, but if it's THAT kind of get-together then I'm not so sure... 8^)

KMK, I'll discuss the PDHSC gathering with the good doctor and see if she's up for the trip. It would be nice to meet some of the Triangle area THR folks. If it works out we might make a trip from Raleigh up to SSI on the 12th as well, she wants to shoot the PLR-16 some more. Stay tuned...

July 27, 2007, 05:25 PM
If that's the case, I might be interested in going as well.
