M60 / 7.72x39 Ammo Question

Today I was giving a speech on Mikhail Kalashnikov for my Public Speaking course. After the speech I had quite a few questions, and a comment from an ex-Army guy. He said that you can use 7.62x39mm in the M60, but not the other way around. Also, that you could get dime-sized groups with it out to 800 meters  . Now, maybe thats contrary to everything I heard, due to case length, and bullet diameters but I just want to make sure. Is this guy trying to be an expert, or is he full of fertilizer?

Also, I think this guy doesn't like me because on his speech on Germany, his picture of the "capital" building was the Taj Mahal, not the Reichstag and I pointed it out. (But he was stationed there mind you).

My money's squarely on the "full of fertilizer" option. I think they would've mentioned something about it while they were trying to familiarize us knotheads with the care and feeding of the things way back when. :scrutiny:

No, this is an "old wives' tale" that pops it's head up in just about every war; during WW2, they said that the Germans could shoot .30-06 out of their 8mms, in Korea, they said that the Chinese could shoot .30-06 out of their 7.62x54Rs, in Vietnam, they said that the VC could shoot 5.56mm NATO out of their SKSs and AKs, and now, we have the 7.62x39mm M60. Even though the actual bullet diameter is the same between 7.62 NATO and 7.62x39mm, the case profiles are definitely NOT interchangeable; the rim on the Soviet round is slightly smaller, so even if you chambered a round, I doubt you'd get the proper alignment, and it certainly wouldn't be safe to try.

Don't take this wrong but just THINK about what you just said.
Just compare the sizes of the two rounds in your head. It's
TOTALLY impossible. The idiot was full of $hit!:what: :what: :what:

P.S. The bullet diamiters are NOT the same.
M60-7.62X51 is .308
AK-74-7.62X39 is .311
Overall length is also very different.
2.800 in. vs 2.155.

He is most likely repeating exactly what his Sgt. told him - and his Sgt. is never wrong.

Y'know, with all this outsourcing, perhaps the German Govt. is run from India?

Just making sure, the thing is that he had made it sound like he had shot 7.62x39mm out of an M60 himself. I figured it was short of impossible so I just wanted to make sure. I would try to correct him, but I figure its just a waste of breath even in the light of facts.

I think he was full of BS as even .308 commerical ammo wont run in a M-60 much less the AK round. Also they fire from a open bolt so you cant even get a decent group at 100 yds firing single rounds. More like 6 inch groups at 100yds as the gun hops when the bolt slams shut. Oh I also will say I have never been to India or Germany but I could tell the Taj from the Reichstag building.

Lemme guess: The Taj Mahal is the one that DOESN'T have the swastika being blown off the roof by the soviets, right?

SDC - I heard the same myth about the AK shooting US ammo: I accidentally (brain lapse) chambered a 5.56x45 round in my SKS, aimed, and pulled the trigger. The sound was a little pffft, then smoke started pouring out around the magazine and bolt carrier. And it did not cycle.

I pulled back the bolt, extracting a case that looked like a peeled banana. After inspecting and cleaning, there was no damage to the gun. There was also no hole in the paper. I suspect the bullet just rattled through the bore and fell to the ground 20 ft downrange.

I switched to the right ammo, and the rest of the shooting was fine.

I don't think the vc or nva would have had much success loading their AK's with 5.56 ammo. But it's a good story.

Regards.

Don't try this at home kiddies!

Left is an 7.62x39 (Silver Bear) Right is a 7.62x51 (Port Surplus)

Good Shooting
